Quiz: Six Scottish club players who made the Euro semi finals
Topic Originator: sammer
Date:   Fri 11 Jun 19:32

I don’t think any player who ever played for a Scottish club has appeared in a European Nations Championship Final. However at least 5 players who played in semi-finals did at some point in their careers ply their trade in Scotland. There is also one player who sat on the bench during a semi-final.

I’m sure you’ll get three of them quite easily but suspect that one player, the only one to have scored a goal (it was the 3rd place play off match ) will remain elusive.

Third place play-off in the Euros?

I didn't think they had them at all but turned out they did between 1960 and 80.

That was the hardest one of all!
The ex Morton, Kilmarnock and Dundee striker played in 1964 for Denmark, losing 3-0 to USSR in the semi.

Rangers have a host of players who have sat on the bench: Nueman, Ronnie de Boer, Van Vossen, Konterman but never actually got on to the pitch. The other sub I found is closer to home.

That leaves 5 who actually played. And one is very obscure, maybe even for parathletic.

Cheers DC,

I missed that rather obvious one so we did actually have a winner who played at one time in Scotland. And he was some player.

Gazza will be one? The 3rd place play off clue gave it away as they did away with that :)

Andreas Thom did come on I discover as a sub after 80 minutes in the 1992 Final, which was lost to Denmark. Cheers.

I thought the big Greek defender whose name escapes me and played for Rangers might have been one?

ETA Kyrgiakos-not correct though.

Gascoigne and van Bronkhurst played semis, and Kutznetsov of course got a good view of Van Basten`s rocket in 1988. I think some of the others named above played in WC rather than Euro later stages.

So far we Rangers: Laudrup, Gascoigne, Kutznetsov, van Bronkhurst
Morton: Bertleson
Celtic: Thom

There`s at least three more who made semis.

Bruno Alves (Rangers)

De Boer played in semi in 2000 and Van Vossen came on as a sub in that game.

Ledley, King and Church (who came on as a sub) are all correct, and news to me until I checked. They were off my radar, as was the Wales sub goalie I thought might be picked up.
Van Hooijdonk came on as a sub in a semi so he counts as well.
Frankie de Boer played in a semi against Italy and missed two penalties from memory, one in the shoot out.
I`m sure Alves will be correct as well, but I`ll get back if not.
Tern I think might have played in a WC semi but I can`t remember Sweden making the semis at the Euros.

Apologies for late reply to parathletic and sadindiefreak. Thern, who was captain, and Jocky Bjorklund did play in a losing semi to Germany in 1992.

So thanks for your help: I thought there were only half a dozen candidates but it seems there were nearer a healthy15. It does seem Laudrup is the only player with a Scottish connection to have played in a winning final though.

There does remain one obscure member of the Scottish semi club who played for Morton in the late 1960s. I had forgotten about him and since he has a pretty common Scandinavian name I had to check his birth date to make sure it was him.

Leif Nielsen is the one I thought nobody would get. He was a Danish goalkeeper who I remember playing particularly well against Celtic in a cup semi final in the late 1960s. I probably saw him at EEP but have no strong recollection.

A high number of the players were Scandinavian or Dutch and played for Rangers. It was possible to pick up amateurs from Scandinavian top divisions in the 1960s and Morton were one of the clubs to see this opportunity, some of whom were sold on at a profit to Rangers. Dundee Utd also had good players brought in this way with Orjan Personn moving later to Ibrox.

The Dutch players who came to play under Dick Advacatt were high quality but on pretty high wages presumably, otherwise they could have chosen to play in the Premier League.

I think when players in the league you are watching play in the later stages of international tournaments it gives that league a lift, so fingers crossed for what is coming.
