Having supported the Pars and Scotland for many years, I will look forward to the game tonight win , lose or draw. The England game gave me great satisfaction. The whole celebration of making it to the Euros have been great and why we celebrated the spot kick results in Serbia.
Whilst it will be a good game tonight my head says Croatia will at the least get a draw, but we have given ourselves a chance and I will sit, without nerves and just enjoy the game.
Occasionally even the Pars win big games.

I understand the sentiment, parsmad, and it’s been great to get there and play reasonably well, but it’s about time we made it beyond the group stages.
It should be a good game as Croatia need to win too. Let’s go for it

I tend to agree with Raymie on this one. I’m also looking forward to the game, but I won’t be watching without nerves. If we were, for example, one goal ahead and the Croats get a corner, I doubt I’d be able to watch. Both teams have to go for it at some point tonight - no point just dropping out and wondering what if. I envy someone like parsmad68 who can watch dispassionately, but I can’t.

Watching full replay against englandshire, I had a few beers on Friday and didn't realise how big a game Grant Hanley had, also that was the 32nd England v Scotland game at Wembley , amazingly that was the first 0-0

Just got feeling something will go horribly against us tonight and cause utter heart break.

Or Nisbet will score deep into injury time to put us through !!

Play like we did at Wembley it will be a cracking game. However we are still too inconsistent. The team that gets put out I hope Nisbet starts to give us a better finishing touch, that`s something we need desperately a goal or 2. Just hope he copies Strachan when he scored in world cup 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We`re going all in to make history. 2 of our world cup qualifying teams are through we need to join them.

I think the team will be same as Friday, obviously Gilmour won't be playing but I think Armstrong will take his place in midfield.

I'm old enough to remember Iran in 78 too par-ticular, I told myself I wouldn't get emotional this time, if we do well then we will do well, if we don't we don't.
The closer it gets to ko the more nervous I'm getting, if we are 2 up going into injury time I might stop being nervous.

Cmon Scotland ⚽️⚽️

Win and we go through, not an easy task.

If we peform well and draw or lose, I won`t be too upset as long as we hold onto Clarke moving forward. we can see the difference he has made to Scotland and the players will learn from the Euro games as they move focus onto the World Cup.

Hoping for a win as I also believe that we will learn more as a group of players as the next game approaches. (here`s hoping anyway)

So come on lads give us a night to remember.

Our future is bright. A team built around Tierney, Robertson, McGinn, McGregor, Armstrong, Gilmour. And a quality manager, finally.

The problem also is Croatia can play guff but give them one good chance they take it, teams of that quality are clinical that way.

We could be playing our best but still need about 10 opportunities for one of them to hit the net.

The first half Croatia have looked like the team that made the WC Final in 2018. Modric, who has played too deep in my opinion in the previous games, has been able to get 15 yards further forward and feed his front me. We were well outplayed for most of the half and O`Donnell is struggling against Perisic.

However, goals change games and the build up to McGregor`s goal was our best passing combination of the match. It`s all there to play for in the second period and yes, like all Pars fans, I would like to see Nisbet come on around 70 minutes.

Feels like Croatia been playing within themselves all night, stepped it up when they needed to.

Honestly despise the Scotland national team. I know they’ll get beat, I can write the script nearly every game but I’m still always left deflated every time they do lose.

There’s always that hope we can do something but think I just need to accept that it’s unlikely that’s ever going to come to fruition. We’re simply not good enough.

Qualifying for a major tournament is a positive step but pointless if we can’t do anything when we get there.

More important game tomorrow with the Pars kicking off pre-season now.

Don’t think he’s negative, we created enough chances I think, we just don’t have the quality and cutting edge. You can’t go full offensive with the standard of side we can put out, need to know our limits.

Agree with Rasta’s point as well that we’re too respectful some times.

Don’t think Clarke should go at all, he’s moving us a little forward and can’t think of anyone better for the job, it’s just whether he is willing to stick around which I think he will.

Clarke is terrible. Without McLeish's start we wouldn't have qualified. Already strugglng in the WC qualifiers. Once again went with loyalty above form and ability.

Dykes is Kevin Kyle awful yet plays the full game again. His lineup for the Czechs was an utter joke, tonight his only change was a disaster. And his treatment of Adams feels almost petty and might cost us the best striker we have had since Mo Johnstone.

Did I read right somwhere we have 2 wins in 11, Faroes and Luxembourg.

Clarke got the lineup for the first game completely wrong to be fair.

Felt like it was set up not to lose like so many other teams say, important not to lose your first game.

Problem is the first game was realistically the only winnable one for us.

I felt that Marshall kicked long far too much and we lost possession from most of them.
But to be fair that was probably because they were light years ahead of us in the middle of the park. Just too good and we looked fearful of trying to play through them when they pressed.

Don’t want to be too negative as I believe we are moving forward……slowly.

We missed Gilmore for sure, Tierney is obviously not fully fit, and playing McTominay in defence is not helping us. But I don’t think McT and Gilmour could play together.

McGinn is terrific but lacks pace and gets caught on the ball too often, McGregor is similar…lacks that bust of pace.

Paterson looked very composed the short time he was on and should start next game.

Fraser, cameo role. Forrest…no where. Two players with genuine pace.

Disappointed with Adams and Dykes is just out of his depth.

Nisbet deserves a starting slot next game too.

One of the most abysmal individual performances I have seen in a long time watching Scotland tonight…..step up Mr Armstrong. That was absolute garbage son. His first touch was 5 yards and he hardly found a colleague all night. Should never be near a Scotland team again.

Last point. The Croats third goal was a training ground corner.

Where were ours? Just a punt into the box everytime and fingers crossed ?

I believe we had more attempts at goal than the opposition in all three games. Over forty attempts in total…..and one solitary goal……

Ach well, good to see us at a major tournament again and realistically the Czech game made it an uphill task. We weren't in the game at all tonight and the midfield 3 of Croatia of Brozovic, Modric and Kovacic absolutely bossed us all game. Felt we were too frantic at times and needed to calm it down and in the 2nd half we didn't get a sniff.
That goal from Modric was class - superb finish.
I hope this is the start of us getting to tournaments on a more regular basis, the signs are certainly positive.

Awight Pat!

Ok

We are nowhere near ready to be a tournament team. We got exposed by a world class player.

But we have one of the most respected coaches in the game in charge of our team and a really good nucleus of a squad with some real quality playing at the highest level in Europe. Our main problem is we don't score enough goals. Other teams take chances in games that put them in a position that allows players like modric to do what they do. We missed almost all our decent opportunities. Goals change games

I'm quite happy with the progress we're making and I'm excited to see where we can go with Gilmour, Patterson etc.

Croatia were just a bit better than us, and looked a decent team tonight. It didn`t help that we had to be so open though - the sapce it left was perfect for them to play and they did so very comfortably.

Despite many folk demanding two up front, that game was a good example of why it`s difficult to play that way, particularly at a decent level of football. Being uncompetitive in midfield meant the two up there never really got into the game.

I`m not having the stuff about showing too much respect, more just a case of not quite being good enough on the day and losing to the better team.

agree great nucleus of team for future, far too negative in tactics. playing McTominay at centre back and leaving Cooper on bench baffling. Dykes two goals in fifteen starts, International class? hold up play non existent. Needs wide players supplying ammunition

We are not good enough and have been not been for many years. Any time we have to take the game to the opposition, such as tonight, we are beaten: in fact we are beaten out of sight. I could quote Portugal 0-5 or Morocco 0-3 in support of what I say. Croatia 1-3 is par for the course.

We ae clearly poorer than either Croatia or Denmark who have similar populations. It`s a national disgrace but we find more excuses than possible solutions. Halve of the excuses are on this sight by this way, from a club that once employed Jock Stein.

Serious questions need to be asked if Clarke and what his his actual instructions were tonight. Dykes needs dropped and we now need to play these young boys and get them ready for the future.

No point in anyone calling Scotland an Embarrassment because we were far from that ! the boys gave their all and at times played some good football , in hindsight if things were different and we had Croatia first game and Czechs last game we would have had a good chance of progressing , I think many people forget that Croatia are a very talented team let`s see how far they go in the tournament !
We just seem not to have that cutting edge when it is required , we made plenty chances in all games but just did not take them ! which is typical Scotland
On the plus side we have a few promising young lads so let`s just get behind them and look forward to the future !
I am disappointed with tonight`s result especially getting back to 1-1 maybe at that stage when we scored we were up for it and who knows if we had got the goal sooner what would have happened ? but we gave Modric too much respect and the manager has to take the blame for this ! for me the game tonight was not the game that fe**ed our chances of progressing it was the first game game against the Czechs where we were more dominant with plenty chances to win the game but failed to convert any of our 19 chances and at this level you have to take your chances , football is a funny old game but I have seen plenty youth players on display to think we might be a better team in the near future

Agree with what Socks said
Midfield were key to taking Croatia, but I mentioned before the game that chances need to be converted, which sadly Clarke stuck with his usual front 2 with a significant amount of chances but had failed to score 1 before tonight. Nisbet has had little time on pitch to make an impact, yer we all know he is a fantastic finisher if the service is there and clearly 30+ attacks prior to to tonight I feel he would have made a difference.

We really need to try and look at the youths that can build around Gilmour,Tierney, Nisbet etc. My only disappointment is if we did get to last 16 it would have made us a more attractive option for players that are eligible. Similarly to how we lost out on James Mccarthy and Aiden Mcgeady, we were not making major finals.

Need to be honest Similarly to Peter Grant appointment I didn`t think Clarke was the right man. He has proved me wrong he got us there....the hard way but we have just been in our first major finals for a effing longtime. Now to look to ensure we qualify for world cup!!

C`mon ya Scotland!!!

Things that will make me happy in future.

McTominay in midfield where he belongs.
Starting Adams every game.
Keeping Dykes on the bench as an impact sub.
Robertson and Tierney gelling on the left.

We weren't an embarrassment, we played well in 1 of the games and we got a goal. I think Clarke got it wrong last night (keeping McTominay in defence and bringing in Armstrong instead a massive failure) and his team choice and tactics for the Czech game were up there with the 5-5-0 of Levein.

He got the England game right cause that's the type of game he knows how to manage. But we need more with this set of players. My worry is the better players will decide its not worth the hassle of flying to Isreal to play out a 0-0 draw lumping the ball to Dykes, McBurnie or some other useless donkey that carries zero goal threat.

I’ve never understood the plaudits Dykes gets and fear he’ll keep playing under Clarke.

I think where Clarke really let him himself down yesterday though was at half time - we really struggled first half but got out of it 1 each - formation wasn’t working and O’Donnell was struggling - I’d have replaced Dykes with Forrest (he’s always been far more of a threat than Fraser) and O’Donnell with Patterson.

We have the bones of a very good team - up front is the challenge and we need to find a new goalkeeper. I’d like to see Nisbet get a run and also think Shankland was unlucky not to be in the squad.

We re light years behind. Technically the Czechs and the Croats were miles ahead. We need to go back to grass roots and look at how young players are coached in Scotland. Take a look back to the last time we qualified for anything….1998! Have we moved forward since then? Long punts to a big Centre forward (developed in Oz)hoping he can control the ball with his head 30 yards from goal. I watched the Scottish cup final this year, two teams tanning the ball 40 yards from one half to the other. Until we can produce footballers comfortable with the ball at their feet we are nowhere. Yes Billy Gilmour offers hope, Paterson looks a prospect, Mctomoney, tierney and Robertson are established top players but beyond that I see nothing to get excited about. The idea that Nisbet and Shankland are top quality players of international class is delusional. They play in low standard league and still don’t hit the net with amazing regularity. Have either ever scored 20 plus goals in the Scottish premier league? We re looking at the current squad for hope when our hope needs to be from the generations to come. I’m not up on the current u 21 squad or the 17s and 19s but I’m sure if there was real quality I’d have heard something about them. I read on another post about Croatia’s remarkable record at all age levels….until we get to something of that standard I’m afraid we’ll continue to be abject failures. Our record from 1974 tells us we’re nothing else but. Nearly but never.

Part, but not all, of the problem is the lamentable state of sport in state secondary schools. How many teams used to represent each school? And now? Reverse this and get primary age kids playing in teams too. Playing in teams for enjoyment not for glory hunting parents.

Well IMHO that post from Warrington is very harsh on our squad.

England have a successful league with a excellent crop of young players & I don`t think they`re even guaranteed to get past this stage, which would also be an "abject failure" in the eyes of many.

Having great set-ups & a proper grass roots system guarantees nothing. Wales got to the semis of the last Euros but I don`t see much difference between what they`re doing & us, it just so happens they have 2 world-class players that carry the average squad thro games. You also need a good coach to get the best from the players you have available to you.

I think we need to get real and review what's working and what isn't. We need to play a long game here. There is no quick fix.

Start looking at facilities across Scotland rather than always focusing on national facilities in Edinburgh and Glasgow, which are of no use to someone in Dundee or Dingwall.

We also need to stop loving in the past and accept that kids nowadays aren't in the park with jumpers for goalposts. They're joining "academies" and playing on astro.

I think there are promising signs in the Scotland squad and we need to keep that momentum.

Wales appearance in the latter stages of big tournaments is no coincidence. Yes they have a couple of world class players but they have a top class youth coaching structure that has been in place since Mark Hughes was national coach. There are now more football pitches in Wales than Rugby!

Taken from the Welsh FA website….

“There are currently 24 Licensed academies in Wales, 12 of which are UEFA grant funded as they are linked to teams playing in the Cymru Premier League.

The other 12 unfunded licensed academies are linked to clubs not currently in the Cymru Premier League.

UEFA Youth development funding is ring-fenced for those clubs playing in the top division in each national association.

The benefits of participating in the FAW Licensed academy program include:

Exposure to regularly audited and FAW supported football provision
A quality assured skill acquisition program
A robust national games program
A pathway into the FAW Regional/National Program which includes the Cymru Cup, the FAW/Trust flagship talent ID event, for Welsh qualified players.”

This doesn’t include the academies at Cardiff City and Swansea City.

It’s also no coincidence that the Welsh National league has improved beyond recognition in that time. Is there anything of this structure, coordination or quality in the Scottish game? We have the potential, we’ve always had the potential but unfortunately our game is run by muppets. Anyone care to update me on what Malkay Mackay achieved in his time at the SFA? No coordinated approach and light years behind the rest of Europe.

Any positivity from qualifying for our first major tournament in 23 years has dissipated quickly it would seem. Now failing to qualify from the group is being branded as a sign of lack of progress despite the fact that previous squads, many with more talented players than the present one, didn`t achieve this either.

Tournament football presents different challenges and unfortunately you can only achieve the experience to deal with these challenges by playing in tournaments consistently. It`s a vicious circle. After an entire generation missing out on seeing the national team participating in a major tournament we now need to build on the positivity generated from the last few weeks.

I’m disappointed we didn’t qualify but would accept that for some semblance of improvement in the way we play the game, some indication that at some point we might be able to compete with the best. I’d suggest that only Slovakia played worse football than Scotland in the group stages.

We qualified this time via the nations league and into an expanded 24 team tournament. We hang our hats on a rugged performance against an England team that qualified at a canter, without breaking sweat or conceding a goal.

We’ve a long long way to go. It needs planning and coordination, not just a decent coach at national team level.

Picking up on Bedworth’s point, the primary school is where I would put the focus. Everyone goes to school, it’s a captive market, so you don’t miss anybody. The school gives an identity and presumably can provide free strips, balls and pitches which means children from poorer homes don’t miss out. No transport costs either.

A player’s relationship with a football, which is an area where we appear weaker than most, is largely established by the age of 12. Of course skill is improved after this age and there are always late developers, but unless a boy or girl is comfortable receiving, carrying and distributing the ball by the time they leave primary school there is much less to build on. Alex Edwards may have been right when he said; ‘You cannae pit the fitbaw intae a boy; it’s either there or it’s no’ but we could do a better job of bringing out what is there.

Good post Eck. It's blatantly obvious we need to improve but it doesn't happen overnight. The amount of interest generated in the mens national team over the last few months with young kids cannot be underestimated. How it's harnessed is another matter but can we not just enjoy what we achieved for a bit rather than destroying it the minute it goes wrong?

How did/do kids develope skills? Formal coaching? Maybe eventually but initially through playing and wanting to get better.
Decades ago it was jumpers for goals in the park ( not the Glen, parkie would chase you) even kerbie in the street. Not feasible now so what do we replace it with? Kids need to have fun and want to progress store they go in to formal coaching.

I live in a comparatively new estate in Leven - when it started 20 odd years ago each new development had to have a kids play area but all had no ball games signs on the grass areas. As it has expanded the new developments now have no areas at all for kids.

In the last month lots of houses have had Scotland flags up in their windows or gardens - I’m yet though to see any children playing with a football - indeed, on Tuesday night the park nearest me was full of kids while the Scotland game was on.

It was great to qualify but WarringtonPar makes a very valid point about this - we only did so because of the back door of the Nations league (and even then not very impressively) - was that really that much better than under previous incumbents?

I don’t know much about Welsh football but I did find it surprising that they were able to attract Declan McManus there.

Having said all that I believe we have the strongest crop of players at our disposal that we’ve had for some time - please though ditch Lyndon Dykes - I see people on social media celebrating that he won twice as many headers in the tournament than any other player - other countries would be embarrassed at this - and for this we leave a talent like James Forrest sitting on the bench - he looked more dangerous in 10 minutes against the Czechs than Dykes did in 3 games.

You re right about building skills at a young age. Big cities in England have cage football areas. Concrete and tarmac, small pitches, enclosed, close proximity, developing skills in the way street football did for us as kids. I see these in areas of Manchester and there are always kids in them kicking a ball around. I’ve also seen articles recently that put the emergence of Sako and Sancho to name but two down to playing cage football as kids, a safe area where they could build their skills as kids without damaging the environment or disturbing the neighbourhood. It needs thought and investment, local council commitment and drive from the SFA but it can be done.

There is one in Glenrothes stuck in the a*** end of beyond. Not used at all and generally an eyesore. Location & safety for the parents to feel their kids are ok is a major factor. The edge of any housing estate is not the answer from this experience.
Alternatively I have seen a skateboard park close to the main road, well lit being used from 5am to 10 at night. I still don’t know why someone was skateboarding at that time in the morning or even if their parents knew where they were!!!

I'd suggest the difference with a skatepark is you can still use it if others are already using it.

If you turn up to a football pitch and someone is on it, you can't really start kicking the ball about. That can then lead to an assumption it WILL be in use meaning people don't use them.

I'm yet to be convinced by the MUGA set ups as to me it magnifies that issues. So not only might someone already be playing football, they might also be playing basketball or hockey.

Facilities need to be local to homes and not just in big cities. They also need to ideally be free. Places like Townhill have great green spaces for football but I'm not sure what's in the likes of Crossford, Cairneyhill etc. What's in the town centre even?

That all said, skills develop through being part of a proper team with coaches. I see loads of kids involved in Joe Cardle's set up at Duloch. All seem enthusiastic and the guys seem to be great with the kids.

When I was visiting my Uncle in North London in the early sixties they had a caged in court, I was never off it,thought it was great.

Meanwhile the new floodlit astro cage in Lochgelly is hardly used, adjacent skatepark busy.

My next-door neighbour has 2 boys, 11 and 7 and says he can't get them off the Xbox apart from when they train with the Blue Brazil!

Three interesting posts that suggest the facilities are there but not used extensively. I guess the challenge is judging by what you’re saying is getting the kids out there. The Joe Cardle Academy sounds great but needs to be backed by investment/ local councils/ SFA to ensure continuity.

Kids football is becoming a middle class sport , underprivileged kids can't afford it ,so you lose out on really talented and hungry kids ,replaced by those that want the training gear and cheap childcare .

Not sure that's true. For example, my brother lives in an area I would expect is really high on the SIMD rankings. His son is probably considered one of the lucky ones but the club he plays for has loads of kids from all backgrounds. He's football mad and will be out in the garden constantly kicking a ball about.
