 Italia - España
Topic Originator: GG Riva

Over the years, there have only been two teams I didn't mind Italy losing to because they were against perhaps the best national sides ever and there was no shame in defeat - the 1970 WC Final v Brazil and the 2012 Euro Final v Spain. In the 1982 WC, Italy actually eliminated another fantastic Brazilian side on their way to lifting the trophy and I must admit I had mixed feelings at the end of a wonderful game.

I'm very much looking forward to tonight's game. Italy may be slight favourites on current form but Spain have a squad of very technically accomplished players more than capable of handing Italy their first defeat in over 30 games. Certainly, Spain are not the team they were when they beat Italy hands down in 2012. Surprisingly, that's the only time they've beaten Italy in a competitive match. Leonardo Spinazzola has been a revelation in this tournament and will be a big miss tonight. Emerson's not in the same class, but will be an able replacement defensively.

I'll go for 2-1 Italy a.e.t.

That 1982 Brazil side was probably the best I`ve seen, even better than 1970. Bl00dy Rossi.
I don`t mind who wins as long as they play well in the Final against Denmark.

Got a sneaky wee suspicion that Spain are going to win this. Think it`s written in the stars for Luis Enrique to be victorious after the personal tragedy that he has endured.
I also think that Spinazolla will be a massive miss. Almost everything that Italy have done well has come down that left flank. Without him they are going to be a lot more tepid in attack. Spain have done little to inspire confidence but in spells during matches they have looked impressive and if they had a more lethal penalty box predator they be close to finished article. If Morata, Torres or Moreno can sharpen their finishing instincts then Italy will be in trouble.

We all hate poverty, war, and injustice.

I hope you're wrong but won't be surprised if you're on the money, TOWK. Spinazzola will be missed but I'm not getting my excuses in early. I hope Locatelli can start or get at least 45 mins. I think he was most unlucky to be left out to make room for Verrati who's never far from a card. My big fear is that one day everything is going to click for Morata and he bags a hat trick.

Just not tonight please.

What exactly is the point in allowing play to continue when a player is in an offside position and goes on to hit the post as Italy have just done and then flag is raised? It just seems utterly pointless.

It's meant to stop incorrect offside decisions. You don't lose anything by letting play continue but there are plenty of times linesman have thought they're making the right decision and got it wrong.

Except that players are meant to play to the whistle, not the flag.

Spain giving Italy a much harder time than many folk expected. One goal may well decide it.

Nobody can play possession football quite like the Spaniards. If they have the ball it takes a lot of time and effort to get the thing back again. After 10 minutes some of the Italians were gulping air as they were being dragged all over the pitch. You`re never sure which Spain will turn up these days but they have looked a good side first half.

Hard to pick a winner but the left back Emerson who was seen as a weak replacement has pace and managed to beat the offside line few times. Italy need to get Insigne on the ball to start asking more questions of Spain but as things stand they just can`t get enough ball to build up their own rhythm. At the moment it`s a bit like Sugar Ray Leonard against Marvin Hagler so this might go to penalties.

Spain look livelier going into extra time. Italy have never really been able to play their game due to Spain`s control of passing and with Insigne off will be less dangerous in attack.

I was thinking England would rather have Spain in the final but think they’ve shown a partial blueprint on how to handle this Italian side and England would be feeling a little more confident taking them on if it ended up that way.

Equally a little bit more wary of Spain after tonight.

All providing they get past Denmark ofcourse which will be difficult in itself.

It's also something that the Pars have been infuriatingly poor at over the last ten years or so. Some of it is essential in order to get back into shape, it's not simply 'time wasting'.

Excellent 5th penalty from Italy but overall I thought that is the poorest Italy have played in the games I have watched. At 1-0 up they already started to pass the ball backwards rather than commit for a 2nd goal. I was confident that Italy could take either England or Denmark before tonight but now not so sure.

Think Spain shot themselves in the foot.

I was shocked he was actually selected to take a penalty, it wasn’t even close, he missed it in the walk up. The way he’s performed this tournament I doubt many of the players had confidence he’d score.

Watching Morata was like watching Mbappe during the shoot out. His penalty was a slightly better version of the one Bonucci scored with, but when your luck`s out that`s it. The Italian keeper looks good for another 15 Buffon years at the very least.

Italy relied on the old guard of Bonucci and Chiellini to see them through extra time and they never threatened much outside of the period after they scored. But they have a strong team spirit and I can`t believe if England get through they can keep the ball away from Italy as well as Spain did tonight.

A few comments on sportsmanship here tonight but I thought both teams played fairly and there were moments of what seemed genuine affection between the Spanish manager and Chiesa and also Chiellini and Alba when they were tossing up for ends at the shoot out. The referee seemed good as well, as have almost all of them this tournament.

One of the most enjoyable tournaments so far. Italy have been a joy to watch - every game involving them has been very entertaining. I felt for Spain tonight, especially Morata. It`s the first game I`ve watched in 31 years that I have not wanted to see either team lose. Terrific game and I think tomorrow night will be very entertaining also. Denmark will be England`s biggest challenge yet.

Spain need to find someone better than Morata.

Did he not score the goal that kept them in it?

Besides defending Italy`s strength is springing runners from deep. They are so quick and accurate. Chiesa in particular is like lightning and a great finisher.

The referee was excellent.

I hope Chiesa just had cramp and not a muscle injury ?

Thought Spain fully deserved to win that tonight, best they have played all tournament by a mile, Italy were chasing shadows for alot of that.
If you can't score when you are on top you are in trouble and when Italy clung on to take it to pens I fancied them in the shoot out.
Danny Murphy was a joke again tonight as well. He was discussing how England would beat Italy in the final and right on cue Spain equalised. It is actually beyond belief that muppets like him get a gig as a commentator. Talking ring piece.

Awight Pat!

I thought that in a final, (though let`s hope it doesn`t come to that) that Spain would cause England more problems yet would be liable themselves to being caught out at the back. Seeing how the Italians were occasionally dissected by the Spanish now has me worried though. The likes of Grealish, Mount and Foden could have a field day against the aging Azzurri centre duo. As I said before hand, and it was hardly an original thought, if Spain had a more clinical striker they`d have seen off the Italians. England have Kane and if they give him a chance he`ll likely take it.
I think the Italians need to be braver. Don`t understand why they aren`t playing Locatelli more. Jorginho or Veratti but not both.
I hope they do go and win, least of all because he gets me 80 quid, but they need to rediscover that confidence and dynamism they had in the group stages.

You can`t play without the ball though which is probably why Insigne was subbed: Spain keep that ball like it`s on elastic. No other European country can retain possession like they do, they`ve been mastering it for years. The present batch of young Spanish players might even match match the achievements of Xavi and Iniesta, but it would be a good idea to discover a Torres or a Villa to stick away some of the chances.

I don`t see Grealish or Mount or Foden running through the Italian central defence except in Rio Ferdinand`s imagination. There`s no guarantee any of them would start an England match in any case. Tonight Italy were unable to get more than 35% possession of the ball: if they play England, they`ll have a lot more than that to work with.

I quit the forum during extra time due to a mixture of nerves and embarrassment. Sammer sums things up extremely well, above.

Spain deserved to win last night, but failed to turn their dominance into goals. Good though they are, they're not at the levels of the group which won three trophies from 2008-2012. Italy showed remarkable resilience and perhaps deserve to be in the final more than Spain if we consider the tournament as a whole.

I feel a bit sorry for Spain, especially Morata. He'll be the target of even more abuse, if he's ever picked for his country again.

Rio made a fool of himself again last night, as others have forcefully observed. The BBC should bin him.
