Just read his obituary in the Scotsman, passed away on the 10 July aged 80 in Phoenix USA.
Did I see him play for Dundee? Don’t recall. Anyway left them for Everton in 1960, record fee for a teenager that paid for the Dens floodlights apparently, and featured with them in the our famous 2-0 Euro victory.
Hard tackling defensive midfielder - was that him that blootered Harry Melrose into the terracing barrier?
Successful spell in USA as player and coach, and the obit notes the fond recognition from Seattle Sounders for his services.

That tackle on Harry Melrose was by all accounts pretty much standard fare from Jimmy Gabriel. It didn`t stop Melrose scoring the winner and it was Gabriel who led the protests to the referee claiming offside. Probably would have won a few more Scotland caps had his career not overlapped with those of Dave Mackay and Pat Crerand.

I`ve have a recollection that Big Jock instructed Alex Smith to follow Jimmy Gabriel all over at EEP in the famous Fairs Cup tie.
As Sammer says Gabriel led the protest delegation to the linesman at Harry Melrose`s winning goal - the claim was rejected by the officials, although they did go through the motions of consulting on it !!!

Indeed, VEE.
Ref. "I'm awarding the goal and you're in complete agreement with me, so I want you to nod your head and run back to half way.
Linesman nods his head and runs back.... ☺
Not your average Sunday League player.
