🤷‍♂️ obviously knew they were struggling to get the money to keep him but didn't see him leaving.

He did take a pay cut and messi and barca both agreed terms a few weeks ago after he agreed a paycut but all this was dependent on barca selling players

According to multiple reports, like this one in Marca, prized asset Lionel Messi will sign a five-year contract extension with Barcelona but take a 50% annual salary cut. La Liga wants to implement stricter financial regulations upon teams and clamp down on the debt-ridden Catalan side.

Agreed to take a pay cut.

He agreed to this a month ago. It is now not possible, so he is leaving. Unless La Liga shift their rules to allow him to stay

As great a football Messi is, societal acceptable of a guy being paid €550 odd million over 4 years, is utterly insane.

That sort of football needs launched directly into the volcano.

Why shouldn't one of the greatest all time get a huge chunk of the money he generates? Football as an industry is worth billions so why should the club get to keep the majority of the revenue that the players generate?

It's interesting to me that many of the folk who balk at a footballer earning a huge wage using his own labour is unconcerned by someone like Jeff Bezos receiving far far more by exploiting the labour of others.

I have zero problem with folk like Messi earning a massive heap of cash. In fact more workers should be able to fully leverage the value they create for their employer as wages.

I think this could be a tactic to pressure la liga into bending the rules to allow the leagues biggest player by far to stay at the club. It will look very bad for Spanish football if the French league are attracting their best players. I seriously hope he plays in England if he does not stay rather than France.

Absolutely. It's just rare that any of us could ever demonstrate our worth to a company's bottom line. Players can point to their output on the park as well as things like shirt sales with their name off the park. The players haven't created the business infrastructure around football but they should have the right to take as much as they can back from it. Without players the game doesn't exist.

I`d say there is zero chance his family will want to live in England so it`ll be PSG, an Italian team, maybe America playing for Becks in sunny Miami, back to Argentina or a last minute switcheroo back to Barcelona, he could easily play for nothing if he wanted to,hed still earn thousands each week through his various sponsors.

No chance he`ll sign for an English club. Zero chance. He can`t speak the language but more importantly, he and his family will not want anything to do with the English weather and culture.

Maybe a few months ago but we have K2 now…….

Don’t see all the fuss. Messi works with Barca, they play to his style, that’s why he’s been completely anonymous at every WC that Argentina have played in. You either play to his game or he struggles.

The invisible hand in action is why both Messi and Bezos are among the 0.01% of wealthiest people on the planet.

Now reports that Aguero is trying to leave after signing just 8 weeks ago. Lawyers involved looking at ways to break the contract

First of all, football is a multi-billion industry and the main beneficiaries of said industry should be the people that make it happen. So, I don't begrudge the best players in the world being rich. Especially not one of the greatest players of all time.

However, here's what's also true...

The level of wealth in the game at the very top is vile.

Actually, let's correct that, at the very top, football is funded by (often murky) private equity and debt, not sustainable "wealth".

No more so than Spain, where the top two sides are an inglorious mix of politicking and tax-evasion. Didn't wee Messi have a suspended jail sentence for tax evasion? I could be wrong mind.

Even with Messi's proposed wage reduction, Barca would be committed to something like 95% of wages to turnover ratio. Granted, not quite Gaven Masterton level but still.

I don't long for the days when players were held hostage to contracts but there surely has to be a happy medium somewhere. I reckon the clubs at the very, very top might fall like skittles at some point. It's not sustainable.

The market will ultimately correct itself on that front and it looks like its starting.

Not in the least but surprised about Aguero if that`s true. Always had him down as a `bad un` ever since he scaffed that shot in against QPR a few years back.

How is Jeff Bezos exploiting the labour of others?

Some rather shady working conditions around the world: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Amazon

Also a frustrating lack of tax being paid in some locations but a lot of that is on tax regulations in countries and can't necessarily blame Amazon for doing what any major corporate would do to minimise tax.

It is a basic idea of socialism that the capitalist classes rely on the labour of others to create wealth.

Jeff Bezos has gathered over £200billion through value his workers created for his businesses

He might work harder than his minimum wage bottle pissers, but not £200 billion harder; he gets (not earns) the vast majority of his wealth directly from the value created by the labour of others.
