 Austria v Scotland

Cannot lose this game. No doubt Clarkes negativity will see us do just that.

I would like to see us play 451

Gordon
O`Donnell ( prefer Patterson but he is injured )
Cooper
Hanley
Robertson

Christie
Gilmour
Tierney ( LM )
McGinn
Tunbull

Adams

For me yes he has to. He is a real box to box type player with an eye for goal.

I think him and McGinn together will be more effective than McGinn and McGregor who are too similar...and none too pacey either..

Our collective mentality infuriates me. Not a dig in the slightest at the original post but we're already seeing this kind of "must not lose" mentality from the players. Interview with McGregor yesterday with all this ifs buts maybe nonsense about "we need 4 points from next two games" and we can't lose against Norway.

How about just focusing on one game at a time with a gameplan designed to win?

The reality is we absolutely can lose tomorrow and still finish 2nd. Of course we can. But it's for the fans to look at the fixture list and think about the permutations, not the players. You better believe Andy Murray at his peak was focusing on one round at a time with a gameplan for each player. One step at a time.

We're coached to fear people. To get rid of the ball. We will never, ever, ever progress until we sort out a better mindset.

of course we can still qualify if we lose, just the same as the Pars can still win the league even if they lose their next 4 games............in reality if we have any chance of finishing second then we cant afford to lose tonight.....simples...

I would imagine Dykes and Adams will be up top and he will go with his tried and trusted 3-5-2 / 5-3-2 formation?

Did you know that a game between these two was abandoned in 1963 due to waist-high tackles, punches and persistent fouling? Incredibly, that battle of 63’ was a ‘friendly’ in front of 95,000 spectators at Hampden.

No doubt.

Why does he not play Tierney at LM ? He is determined to accommodate him and plays him in a 3 man central defence...

Play him LM and let him get at the Austrians on that flank.......That would show positive intent to me at least..

Denis Law scored 2 goals in the abandoned match with Austria in 1963 and had to be shielded by Scottish players when the players were taken off the field for fear of reprisals.

Here`s Denis showing how to attack the ball in the air when scoring against Austria in 1968. A glimpse of the exquisite Charlie Cooke as well.

Regards tonight, if we can get good performances out of our better players then we have a fair chance. If we play pedestrian possession football then a 2-0 routine defeat seems on the cards.

Tierney and Robertson aren't and never will be wingers. They excel and breaking up play and bombing forward with the ball, playing 1-2s with central players to let them get behind the defence. Most of their game would be completely nullified playing that far forward

Scotland XI: Gordon, Hendry, Hanley, Tierney, O`Donnell, Gilmour, McGregor, Robertson, McGinn, Adams, Dykes.

Motherwell captain Stephen O`Donnell returns in place of the injured Nathan Patterson, Callum McGregor is restored to the midfield and Che Adams is back up front.

Ryan Christie and Kevin Nisbet drop to the bench.

Shockingly negative team selection again….safety first by SC

Disagree about Tierney not being effective as a LM ..why not? He has pace, good technique, is an excellent crosser of the ball…wasted playing back there…unless of course he has a licence to get forward more than we have seen of late.

Never been too impressed by McGregor for Scotland recently..he lacks a real burst of pace… Would have preferred Turnbull.

We will just have to wait and see if SC tried and trusted pays dividends.’..

No. If we beat Israel and Faroes and Denmark win their home games against Austria and Israel then we go into the final two games in second place irrespective of what happens tonight.

My point is the players shouldn't be thinking like this though, we should be set up to aim to win tonight. Play with the mindset of a draw being the minimum acceptable result then we increase our chances of sinking into ourselves and losing.

That was a massive statement tonight that we can do it when it really matters. We need to do it one more time V Israel and we will pretty much secure second place. We deserved that tonight. We had the better chances even though Austria had the possession. The defence were excellent. What a transformation Jack Hendry has had. Moving to Belgium - away from the old firm was a master stroke as he has went strength to strength there. Hanley was a rock and the two strikers were superb. One more big push!!

What a performance. Our defence is looking pretty solid, our midfield is tenacious and starting to create. We just need that striker that can start hitting the net and maybe, just maybe, we might actually be a decent team. Age is on our side too.

Excellent performance tonight. Really well played and created the better chances over all even though Austria had more of the ball. Defended well for the most part and looked lively going forward. Could have used it a little bit better at times but a vital win at a vital time so can't complain too much.

I don't recall our strikers missing any clear cut chances created by our midfield? It was a great result, but i think it was always going to come down to a set piece or penalty. We need to be making better decisions when we do have possession, and then the goals will come IMO.

Did not understand at the time why Hanley had been booked yet no Pen given , but that has been explained above.

However, If Hanley was booked for a foul in the box ,then why was the Austrian number 4 not booked when he fouled Adams for our pen ? He had just been booked a few minutes earlier for a terrible foul on McGregor that could easily have been a red.........he would have walked if the ref had booked him again.

Ref obviously bottled it.....

Did they not change the rules about giving cards out on penalties or was that just for red?

Deemed that a penalty awarded is a sufficient ‘penalty’ in itself rather than further detriment if the opposition by a booking/sending off.

I`ve given up trying to follow the rationale behind red cards/yellow cards/no cards for fouls in the penalty box. Shouldn`t they be judged on the same criteria as fouls outside the box so, if the defender`s tug on Adams would have merited a yellow card elsewhere on the field, he should have been cautioned?

On the execution of the penalty, it`s a huge gamble hitting it straight down the middle without waiting until the keeper commits himself, especially if you hit it so low. I know taking penalties is all about confidence but, if I were a coach, I`d be nominating somebody who preferred to strike the ball firmly to either corner.

The rule is the 'double jeopardy' but only applies to genuine attempts to play the ball. In this case there was no attempt to play the ball so it didn't apply. Should've been booked and off

It’s still a red card if they offending player makes no attempt to play the ball and denies a clear goal scoring opportunity. You could argue all day about the clear goal scoring opportunity in this instance but it’s a yellow all day long as the defender has fouled while making no attempt to play the ball. The fact that he was already on a yellow should have no bearing on the refs decision. If Hanleys foul was a yellow then so was the Austrians.

"As there was no penalty given as ball was out of play, can Henleys yellow be challenged !!"

No can still foul and be cautioned for activities when ball is out of play. Restart of game is just the restart that was already awarded e.g Ball out for a throw in, player throws a punch, gets red card for Violent conduct, restart is still just a throw in.

Have to say TV coverage frustrated the life out of me last night. Replays running into the game and missing incidents so more replays to show incidents it missed the first time :(. When VAR check against O`Donnell on HT they started showing replays and then heard whistle go but ball was already back in play and another foul awarded.

I think the biggest difference last night was Craig Gordon didn't roll it out to his defenders every time, he mixed it up by playing the long ball now and again not giving Austrian midfield time to set up, and pulling thier defenders out of position. Simples

I hope Peter Grant was watching, by the time we get upto the halfway line there are 2 banks of 4 we have to break down

Maybe he was referring to your opening post rather than the penalty. We managed to win despite Clarke`s `negativity` and without playing Tierney in left midfield!

Maybe he was indeed.

Yes I will admit I am not the most optimistic regarding Scotland.....been let down too often over the years...

Happy with the win though.....as they are like hens teeth away from home....

I will be my usual negative self prior to the next game though.......then when the game starts ranting and raving, foaming at the mouth and kicking every ba`.....
