Match thread - Ayr United v Pars
Topic Originator: OzPar
Date:   Sat 11 Sep 10:18

Well, what is it to be? The Gun Fight at the OK Corral? The Lord of the Rings? Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid? Scarface? A Bridge too Far?

Which Pars team is going to turn up today???

Is Shackleton going to save the day? Or will we sink like the Titanic?

Come 90 minutes, we should know with a fair degree of certainly, one way or another, what direction our football club is heading.

As for the team lineup, formation and tactics, I suspect that none of us has a clue as to who or what will be turning out at 3pm.

Ayr United at Somerset Park is never ever easy. They have just dumped their manager David Hopkin, who a few on here would have preferred to Peter Grant.

Hmm, I don`t know about that, but frankly, if we lose again today, I want to see Mr Grant gone this evening.

The line up just doesn’t fill me with confidence, sitting hoping we can do something today still. If we pick up another heavy defeat today then we are becoming a bit of a laughing stock.

Still tho, mon the pars !

No excuses today ( again) playing a team whose confidence is as low as ours, he’s picked HIS best team having not been forced into a certain formation, sheet or bust Peter.

If, as the personnel suggests, its a 3-5-2 again its another selection that makes we worry. Comrie is a right back, not a wing back. Pybus, Dow and Dorrans in the middle looks weak. Graham keeping his place. Wighton on the bench. Just more shoehorning of players into the team, more evidence that he`s set on a formation that doesn`t get the best out his squad. If itsn4-4-2 with Jones or Watson in midfield it`s even more baffling. Wasn`t looking forward to the game beforehand but sheesh, this looks like it could be a struggle. At least the rain has held off.

I find the omission of Kai Kennedy baffling, he was literally the only positive from Arbroath IMO.

Didn't Grant talk about not having a specific system, and instead playing to the players strengths?

He did Grant, which is why this continued insistence in playing 3-5-2 is so bizarre. Means you don`t get the best out of Comrie, means there`s room for wingers or wide midfielders when we have Thomas, Kennedy, Dow and arguably O`Hara who can play there, means there isn`t much in the middle of the park... I`m not saying 3-5-2 can`t work, but with this squad? Not for me, Clive.

Couldn`t believe when grant got the job was wiling to give him a chance.. I stay a 20 minute drive from Ayr and couldn`t bring myself to go decided on a wander round Asda with the wife instead... Something needs done now before Asda halbeath starts getting busier on a Saturday and eastend gets quieter.. Disgusting

From the decent pre-season/League Cup games, the system works quite well in terms of creating chances.

The problem is it also makes us defensively awful.

Remember when players were able to pass to their own side? Defence is a shambles with no leadership. It takes something to get a free kick in your own half, pass it to an unmarked player, who can`t control it, and it ends up a corner for Ayr. Thing is, we`ve probably had the better chances but the wasting of our possession is unacceptable.

For all Grant is getting it in the neck, I can't believe that him, Shields and Whittaker coach our boys to completely ignore any movement in our box and just hope for the best.

It'll probably finish 2-1 now, but it looks like there's a few more goals possible - at either end.

Aye that was kind of my point. His system works when you’re playing against an opposition who just want to keep the score down. Any organised 11 that we come up against will beat us comfortably this season, home or away. He MUST be sacked on Monday morning.

For all the shambles of going 2 goals down, we`ve actually played reasonably well for spells. The two goals were shockers though; Comrie will get flack for both but the centre halves have to do better, especially for the second where Edwards andnGraham were totally ball watching while the Ayr player continued his run. The frustration again is that the few times Dow has ran at the Ayr defence they`ve looked shaky but we are playing this system where we don`t play wingers we can`t get Kennedy or Thomas on to run at them.

That exact goal has been f*****g coming.

We've got away with it a couple of times, absolutely sick and fed up of the club at the moment, this isn't just Grant, its sheer and utter incompetence from the chairman to put us in this position. He has to take the can for this.

Don`t know why Fon Williams tried to play it to Graham but what the f was Graham thinking trying to let it run across his body and turning his man in his own box? Suicidal defending. I hope to god we don`t have some kind of "must play" clause in the loan agreement because the guy isn`t cut out for it at this level.

Meanwhile, part-time Arbroath, managed by Pars "reject" Dick Campbell, sit a comfortable second in our league, having today swept aside newly relegated Hamilton 4-0.

Having said that, I don`t want Dick back either...

well you couldnt accuse the players of lack of effort , and I got the impression they were trying to execute Grant’s tactics but it isnt working . Both the left side and right side of the back three were very very poor and cost us all three goals. Time to revert to a back 4 .

I saw some passion from some players but not many. Others were going through the motions. The inability to even pass a ball to one of their own is scary. As for the defence? We are starting every game 1-0 knowing that it`s just a matter of when keeper is going to feck up.

I agree. Defensively we are very poor indeed. We were the first team to concede a goal in Scotland today. I imagine PG will have a couple of games more to turn it around. Despite the effort, I think some of his signings are not good enough. I suspect we will be fighting for survival this season in this league. We are nowhere near promotion material. Despite the comments about priducing it in training it is all about results on a Saturday. We seemed to have regressed from last season.

It`s so frustrating to watch the Pars just now. For periods in the first half we played some OK football but usually a mistake would ruin any chance of keeping Ayr under pressure. And defensively we are absolutely terrible. By that I mean that we are defensively terrible right through the team. Back in July I said that with this setup, defending as a team was going to be really important, and our complete failure to do this properly (or even attempt it) is indeed proving to be important.

Comrie made a bit of an erse of it at the first goal, but to me it looked a direct result of players playing in a setup theya re not comfortable with. Has to be said it was a really good finish when the ball did come in. Second was just due to not being switched on and not picking up the only danger in the box. And the third - well, aye.

Ayr looked utterly hopeless at the back as well and going into half-time it looked a good shoud that we`d score again. They were tighter after half-time though, and had a very easy time defending their lead. The thing that hurts most is that there was just nothing there when trying to come from behind and, like so many other times in recent seasons, they played like they knew they were beaten long before the end.

I`m going to give a positive mention to Dan Pybus today. He`s obviously limited as a player, but I was looking round all the players one at a time towards the end of the game and he was the one that stood out as still wanting the ball with no hint of trying to hide.

Sadly it looks like there`s only one way this can end. Peter Grant has to go, and go now.

Now some of the heat of the moment has dissipated, here are my thoughts for what they’re worth, starting with the much maligned formation.

The system (if it was a 3-5-2) should not be hugely controversial.

I’m not a huge scholar of such systems but I’m sure it can be employed successfully. Three centre-backs, two wing backs, perhaps a midfield trio that could be described as a ball-winner, a passer and an attacker, and a forward pairing, one with height, one with pace. On paper, it seemed reasonable. Perhaps an expert can provide a clearer analysis. And perhaps Socks could elaborate on his comments about "defending as a team". Perhaps something to do with Todorov being the first line of defence?

As for personnel – the keeper was replaced – perhaps overdue, and the two players just back from International duty were benched. Again, not too controversial. Jones was brought in at RCB allowing Comrie to revert to RWB which he should be more comfortable with. Graham starting was a puzzle – he seems to make huge mistakes every week. Time for a spell in the reserves…

The bench was well balanced – keeper, full back, centre-back, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, winger, forward – but Thomas’ presence was debatable given the rumours. I note he was last out for the second half but couldn’t say if that was significant.

As for the game – well, we got off to the worse possible start – I think it was Comrie [edit - Jones] outpaced on our right, and a cut-back not dealt with. At least it gave us plenty of time to get back into the match. The problem this season is that every so often there is a “what happened there” moment – the players are staring at each other whilst the ball is in the back of the net. Such as with goal number two – failure to deal with it on our right, a cross to the back post and a free header. Whose man was it? Edwards’ or Graham’s? I’m not sure but they seemed to blame each other. And the third came when a long throw in back to the keeper who tried to play it out from the back by giving a hospital path to Graham who promptly lost possession.

True, we played some nice stuff in patches - neat passing our way up the field – but couldn’t find the final ball. But if you give the opposition a two goal start every week you’re not going to win too many games at this level, and it’s no surprise the players’ heads go down in the latter stages. I suspect they know it’s not working and will be a bit baffled as to how to stop the slide. Perhaps the problem is the players aren’t sure what they are meant to be doing and this uncertainty is infecting the entire team.

I suspect it is time to bin the experiment, stop trying to play like Juve or whoever and get back to basics, starting with reversion to a 4-4-2. Clearing your lines might help at times. We’re in a relegation scrap now.

MT it was Jones who was outstripped for pace on the first goal and gave his man too much room at the second.

Thanks Wetherby - I originally thought it was Jones (22) not Comrie (2) but allowed myself to be persuaded that it was the latter. First time I`d seen Jones - he looked off the pace.

We had one of the best defensive records last season. 3 of the regular back 4 are still at the club but none of them being played in the same position as last season.
We have 3 decent wide attacking players but are playing a system which doesn’t require such players.
Square pegs and round holes comes to mind.
Fit the players into a system which doesn’t suit them or find an alternative system which plays to their strengths ?
As long as PG keeps doing his thing I seriously fear for us

Fair question as to what`s meant by defending as a team and I suppose everyone will have their own view. To me, it mainly means being organised as a team when we don`t have the ball, with all of them contributing to closing down spaces in the right areas. It might mean a forward putting the effort in to get the right side of an opponent with the ball in his area, preventing a simple pass up the park into space. Possibly someone getting back to cover a runner or maybe block a shot or a pass into space. A big part is midfield players knowing what to do to shut down space.

Look at the first goal yesterday. For some reason, Aaron Comrie went chasing a man way up the park at a bye kick, for a ball he couldn`t win. Result is space left in behind. Sometimes a press is fine, but it has to be done properly with the whole team knowing what they`re doing. Pressing well as a team would be another example of defending properly as a team.

Look also at Arbroath`s second goal. We were a bit unlucky that the ref gave a foul on the keeper, but as they broke from the free kick I was shouting that we had to be switched on for defending now. We obviously weren`t as they broke right through us and scored.

Football is a game of two things - space and probability. Be organised without the ball and deprive your opponents of space where they want it, and the probability of a positive result increases.

Billy Reid`s Hamilton side of 2007/08 had some good players, but the one thing that impressed me most about them was that they were always organised and defended well together when they didn`t have the ball. It needs good discipline and good coaching and sadly we seem to have neither.
