 Taxi for Grant

The ‘Taxi for Grant’ jibe may be a phrase Peter Grant has put into the English language, his greatest legacy.

I remember being at a Scotland match in the late 1980s when Yugoslavia were passing off us off the park and a wag (presumably a Rangers fan) shouted: ‘If you want to watch the game Aitken, come up here and pay your money like the rest of us.’ Aitken was a predecessor of Grant’s midfield role at Celtic. A strong club player but completely out of his depth at international level.

I think the ‘Taxi for Grant’ came slightly after that but I’m fairly certain it has its origins at Parkhead and may have referred to players before Peter Grant. Maybe as early as the 1960s.It is unusual in that the insult comes from the home support who think the player is not good enough. Nontheless, Peter Grant, the committed but limited midfielder, is the name which has stuck with this particular insult and it may yet have a rebirth at EEP.
