In a parallel universe: Board Statement
Topic Originator: Rusty Shackleford
Date:   Tue 5 Oct 20:32

Hi folks,

Ross here. To say we're all hurting right now is an understatement. Performances haven't been good enough and the league table doesn't lie. Nobody likes being criticised and sometimes we all get carried away a bit but we hear you. The players, the management team, the board and our new owners all hear you.

I guarantee you we're all hurting in our own way. The board and I work hard to try and do the best for the good name of Dunfermline Athletic. The volunteers all work hard to help us keep the club running. And time and time again you fans have dug deep to help us try and be the best club we can be. From when we all collectively saved the Pars all those years ago till year after year when you buy season tickets, match day tickets, lifeline subscriptions and everything else. Nothing feels better than when we're all pulling in the same direction.

But all that can mean nothing when you're sat at the bottom of the league without a win. But I assure you that the players and management team are hurting in their own way too. I won't patronise you by pretending they all grew up as Pars fans like you or I but it's their careers and professional pride on the line. They're desperate to turn things around and are working hard to put it right. I promise you that.

Sometimes the margins between winning and losing are thin and we've had our challenges with covid, injuries and a few decisions that could have gone either way. But I know what you're thinking "so do other clubs" and you're right. But the board and our owners firmly believe that we're starting to go in the right direction. We've stopped losing so many goals and now we need to turn that solidity into better attacking performances too. And we need to do it quickly.

That's why I'm releasing this statement to ask you to give the team a chance to turn things around. I know this won't be popular among many of you and I understand that. But my vision for a community club doesn't involve sacking a management team so early in the season when we see first hand how hard they're working behind the scenes. Peter and the team know this can't go on for much longer but I'm asking you for one last push over the next few games to come together and see what we can achieve when we all work together.

We've been written off before but the Pars family have pulled through. Come on ye Pars.

I'm not extracting the urine here - you might want to ask if you can help the board with this kind of thing.

That's very kind of you but I'm sure this will turn into an argument in about six minutes.

Or they could have written something less like a short novel:

No-one at DAFC accepts the current position as acceptable. However, we're willing to give the manager more time to turn things around.

In the meantime, we'd appreciate if fans could back the team rather than suggesting hiring Dick Campbell.

It might well do but if you've got experience in PR and even taking the latest statement out of consideration; the comms hasn't always been quite what it could be in terms of quality irrespective of the popularity of the content of the message.

If you had the time and the inclination to it, they might be grateful for the input of a PR pro.

I could do them a crisis comms workshop. It's basically me saying "in a time of crisis please don't slag off your paying customers" repeatedly for sixty minutes till it sinks in.

This.

BTW, excellent "alternative" statement, Rusty.

The OP sounded like Tony Blair justifying the invasion of Iraq. Heavy hearts and hurt all round, but an appeal to the mythical `Pars family.` Very 1990s. I preferred the BOD statement today which was lighter on cliches, albeit bigger on excuses.

In a true parallel universe Peter Grant, known as `Pep` to the players, warned that 8 consecutive wins was no guarantee of winning the league. `We`re losing Comrie to international duty this weekend and are short on cover if he`s injured, but the boys can`t wait for the next game.` `Andy` Todorov has brought power to the attack and `Scarlet` O`Hara can`t stop scoring. The fans have been fantastic......`

Also the only Labour prime minister to be elected in the last 47 years. Their presentation can`t have been that bad.

Spoken like a true Tory. Blair wrecked the Scottish Labour Party- which was one of its founding members- and there`s a feeling about that DAFC might be going the same way, but not in a parallel universe.

We have gone off topic. I was merely stating that comparing a statement to one of New Labour`s is hardly an insult given their record either side of that era.

Calling someone a Tory for not caring about how many Labour MPs are in Scotland is a bit childish. It`s also a bit blind to the current political landscape in the country.

Rusty, this is an object lesson in how to compose an honest, engaging and frank appraisal of our current situation. Had this been issued as the official communication from our board, then I’m confident a lot of the anger and dissent expressed in the last 24 hours could have mitigated, I won’t say avoided. The retention of Peter Grant’s services is always going to be a hard, controversial sell, but the board have exacerbated the situation with their ill advised release - yours is a hundred times better, good job !

Yes, an excellent, all round piece of work, Rusty.

There`s no doubt in my mind that you have real talent, but I daresay you were helped by having a structure to work on and remodel - not unlike a teacher correcting the clumsy English of a foreign language student. 🙂

Just years of experience really and plenty of mistakes. This is such a massive own goal though, I'm struggling to fathom how it could have been any worse.

Classic example of why big companies and executive teams outsource their PR. Ultimately you cannae have people who are under fire writing their own comms. Recipe for disaster.

Very true. The same goes for many of the "soft" professional skills like marketing, design, event management, copywriting, speechmaking, negotiating etc - they each require specific skills to be done well, but lots of business people think they can do them, when they would never think of doing electrical or plumbing work themselves.

Brilliant opening post RS, this would have been much more palatable and I'd like to think it's closer to what RossM was thinking if he was involved in the statement(which I assumr he was ) . Currently however it feels like fans are being treated like naughty schoolkids and it harks back to the dreaded Masterton era...

Remember back in 2012 when all the football authorities, media etc were trying to usher Sevco into the top division and then, when that was KB'd, into the First? Various clubs, ours included, issued very well written public statements arguing against this.

Masterton was still in charge and our statement was very different in tone to anything else we ever released. I was well impressed, it was like a competition between the different clubs protesting and we'd just upped the ante. I was a bit disappointed sometime later when I heard it was done by an agency, but it all makes sense now.

I think he definitely was. In fact it reads like a few folk had input which in itself doesn't help with the cohesion of the statement. Even if the last paragraph is true this wasn't the statement to tag it onto IMO and Rusty's effort to rework it is better than the original.
