 Faroes v Scotland
Topic Originator: Rusty Shackleford

So, our inevitable march to winning World Cup continues tonight. Thoughts?

Any away match gives me the heebie jeebies but surely we'll go into this with some momentum and be too strong?

Nisbet to come in for Adams or do you think he'll go with Christie?

Should be a thread discussing how many we are going to score rather than any concerns about dropping points, although if Faroes are going to pull off an upset odds are usually it’s against us.

It should be a comfortable win. Then again it was only 2-0 to Austria on Saturday and before that Denmark only managed to beat them 1-0. We seldlom thoroughly beat nations that we should and the pressure is really going to be on the guys. Make no mistake, if we don`t secure second spot now it would be the greatest failure ever for the Scottish national side.

This is the game when everything goes wrong when we have got ourselves into a good position. The expectation that we will roll them over goes out the window when they score in the first 10 mins and we struggle to get a draw...

Hanley, Christie and Fraser in for Patterson, McGregor and Adams. McTominay must be moving into midfield and Fraser an advanced right wing back?

The Faroes are creating a good atmosphere tonight good on them.

Changed days from what looked like a tattie field with lines on it on our infamous draw. My concern here is the plastic pitch and how well Faroes have done at home. Especially only losing to a single 85th minute goal against Denmark a team that`s knocked 27 goals in 7 matches. They seemed pretty organised against Austria. Just need to make that breakthrough goal so they need to open up a bit and come at us which will make more space.

Everyone knew this would happen. When you compare who the players from each team play for domestically then we are once again on the verge of a truly embarrassing result. When it really matters the most. Those guys better get a grip in the second half. Clarke yet again shoehorning players in to positions not working again though.

Denmark hit the same problems in the Faroes. A very very well organised team. But let's not take away from the fact that Dykes was only ever going to score by someone kicking it off him. Only time he got in front of his marker all night. Really felt that game suited Nisbet so much more.

It also looks like all you have to do to get a free kick and a player booked is to not challenge for a high ball, then fall down clutching your head.

Build up play was far too slow most of the time. Played into their hands.
First 10 after half time we were pinging it about a bit better.
Defensively very poor though. A half decent team would be taken at least a couple of the chances they created.

Of course we deserved to win. All over them for almost the entirety of the second half. Rode our luck a bit the first half but as others have said, Faroes are well drilled.

How many times have you seen the Old Firm win a messy game like that by wearing the opposition out?

We all watch these games crippled by our own history.

Feel like we robbed them tbh. They are similar to Scotland, Play well in games they are expected to get pumped by. This is classic Scotland when not expecting to get anything we play outstanding at times. Slightest hint we are worth a point at least and we are utter pants.

Now 4 points clear and 2 games left. Moldova away is tricky we only beat them 1-0 at hampden. Hopefully Clarke will bring in players he has left on the bench to try to make an impression which is what we will need. Nesbit from the start. Stroll on 12th November.

Strange.
Denmark beat the Faroes 2 0.
They are a top team so the Faroes are much improved and a decent side.
We only managed to beat them 1 0 despite them hardly touching the ball in the 2nd half but we are crap and the manager is lucky not to get sacked.

What is this dotnet obsession with sacking managers.

It was never going to be an easy game. Faroes are a different side at home as their record shows.
Yes we didn't play well either particularly in the first half but we dominated them after the break, getting balls into dangerous areas and with luck could have scored earlier.
End of the day, it's job done.
Three points and just a win away from the playoffs.
That's the only stat that matters.

The days of playing any team and beating them 6 or 7 nil are long gone, I'm sure Ally McCoist said before KO that The Faroes had won 8 out off their last 20 home games. Pretty decent record for a team in the so called minnow bracket

TOWK I haven`t had a chance to see what booking situation is for both teams as Oleg Reacbiuk got sent off for Moldova and like us have had a fair amount of bookings in past few games. It will be interesting how we do though.

TBH I am glad this game is before the Danish game. Just hope we start the way we started 2nd half.

That would mean the best Israel could do is equal Scotland`s points total, in which case our superior head-to head results would see us take 2nd place.

[EDITED - No, this is wrong. Head-to--head does NOT apply.]

Can`t rely on my forecast being right though, if the Prediction League is anything to go by!

End of the day we need as many points as possible, if we want to be one of the Seeded teams in the Play offs

Denmark only beat them 1-0 in the 85th minute

I thought so, which is why I started the post. I googled to check and I got a 0 2 game.

I don`t think it does go to head to head if points are level - sadly - as has been stated a couple of times above. My memory is that this happens in UEFA competitions, but in FIFA competitions (this one is) it goes to goal difference first. I couldn`t find it on FIFA website but Wikipedia agreed with what I thought.

On the question of the size of the player pool available to the Faroes, it might be quite a lot bigger than you`d expect. I remember reading many years ago that Danish citizens are automatically eligible to play for them and for a time it was almost a Danish reserve team. Don`t know if that still applies (my internet search skills obviously weren`t up to scratch last night...) but a good chance it does.

How are the seeded teams in the play-offs decided? If it`s the 6 best runners-up how is `best` decided? Some qualifying groups have 5 teams in them and some 6 so presumably it`s not total points. Average points per game would seem to be the obvious answer but could this be weighted to take into account the perceived degree of difficulty of different groups?

Most commentators seem to think Scotland are well-placed to be seeded but I`ve never heard it spelled out how this works. Being seeded is quite an advantage as it means the first knock-out game is at home. For the second knock-out game I believe the home teams are drawn by lots.

From their team last night all players including all subs were born in Faroes with the exception of John Frederiksen who was born in Denmark but both his parents are Faroese.
If they could select Danish players you would expect there to be at least one in their squad.

Yes, you`d expect so. In that case, likely that either it no longer applies or what I heard all those years ago was wrong. I can`t remember where I read it, though have a feeling it might have been an interview with Craig Brown and it really struck me because it was something I had never heard of until then.

Socks is correct about the qualifying rules in the event that two teams have the same points total.

The official FIFA World Cup regulations (Item 20.6) specify that it's goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head, and then a list of other criteria right down to the drawing of lots.

20.6.
In the league format, the ranking in each group is determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their
rankings shall be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the
teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams
concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams
concerned;
g) the goals scored away from home count double between the teams
concerned (if the tie is only between two teams);
h) fair play points system in which the number of yellow and red cards in all
group matches is considered according to the following deductions:
– first yellow card: minus 1 point
– second yellow card/indirect red card: minus 3 points
– direct red card: minus 4 points
– yellow card and direct red card: minus 5 points
i) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

This is the game when everything goes wrong when we have got ourselves into a good position. The expectation that we will roll them over goes out the window when they score in the first 10 mins and we struggle to get a draw...

When Dykes came into the team some said he was a decent target man but not a goalscorer. The guy scores four in four games, the first time anyone`s done this since 1969, and now his credentials as a professional footballer are being questioned. He must be glad he chose to play for Scotland.

Thankfully he is finding himself in positions to put them away. Something we missed and relying too much on McGinn who shares 4 goals in this campaign as well.
We really do miss a Ally McCoist type striker that can always grab a goal when you least expect it. I am hopeful Nesbit will soon find form and start knocking them in like he used to for us.

Nice to see Dykrs hitting his straps. We are not missing McCoist too much....Dykes is scoring at the same rate.

Strange take.

4 goals in 4 games including 3 winning goals.

His movement for his goals against Israel and the Faroes was excellent. Showed desire to get there and particularly on Saturday, showed a great touch to get on the end of the cross. Not sure if we've got anyone else in the squad with that kind of mentality in front of goal.

Hes no Erling Haaland but I'm glad he's a Scotland player.

...ken?

The ball was kicked against him for the winning goal. Yes he was in the right position but so would any other striker have been. He is woeful.

Maybe his movement and positioning forced the error from the defender. What`s woeful is when folk come on here with outrageous statements they make no attempt to justify. Managers at Livi, QOS, QPR and Scotland obviously don`t share your opinion.

Dykes should be in every Scotland team.
He's there for a reason and it's not about scoring goals however welcome they've been recently.
He's a nuisance for defenders.
He holds up play very well and brings others into play.
He's exactly what we need at our International level.

Doing the same job as Kenny Miller done for Scotland for years, except he is a lot harder to knock off the ball. 5 players have to be in any Scotland team at this time

Craig Gordon
Keiren Tierney
Andy Robertson
John McGinn
Lyndon Dykes

East End Park is a symbol of all that is DAFC.

Agree with that but would add Billy Gilmour in that. He's an outstanding talent.

Agree it's Gordon, Tierney, Robertson, McGinn, Gilmour and six others. I wouldn't have Dykes in that bracket though - he's nowhere near that standard.

He is in a run of form though so deserves his place at the moment. However, you could see someone like Nisbet putting pressure on his place but you can't really see anyone threatening to confine McGinn or Gilmour to the bench.

I love it when we go sell Kevin Nisbet,
He's gonna pay for everyone this season.

Dykes is great out ball, controls most balls perfectly then hard to get ball back off him.
His goals are a bonus for me

It's as simple as this for me. We are not as good a team when we don't have a big man up front. And he's the best we've got.
Not exactly Joe Jordan but not bad.
