 Worst Championship?
Topic Originator: PARrot
Date:   Wed 27 Oct 19:05

Someone commented that this is the weakest Championship in his lifetime. I think I got that right.

Is it?

There is not a Hearts, Hibs, Dundee United or Rangers banking the automatic slot but is the rest of the league really weaker than previous years?
I have no opinion on it. Just thought it would be an intetesting discussion.

Doesn`t the absence of the `big clubs` make the league more competitive?

In my opinion it`s a strong championship. Yes, it doesn`t have the "big teams" but I`m yet to see a team that i thought was weak. Been at both Partick Thistle games this season and I thought they looked really strong, Tiffioney , in particular, looked like he could play at a higher level. No whipping boys in the league this year like there has been in the past.

Off course there will be those who will compare the championship with La Liga and bemoan the standard of football and there will be others who won`t understand how a strong league can have a part time team in the top 3.

But for me, it`s a strong and competitive league in which the teams at the top struggle to beat those at the bottom.

Raith beat Aberdeen quite comfortably and that`s maybe an indication that it`s not a diddy league.

I’d say on average it’s a poor championship. Inverness and Kilmarnock will hopefully make it an interesting title battle, even more interesting if Arbroath (who are a well coached machine of a part time team, they maximise every strength and cover each others weaknesses brilliantly) or the Rovers could perhaps challenge too. The Rovers didn’t look great last night but were missing 3 key players. Patrick are an average side. Everyone below them is pretty much dug meat IMO. Top 4 are decent, sharp drop from there.

Any of the top 4 in league one could stay up in this championship. Any one of them.

I think its a different championship this year with no outright runaway winner so far after 11 games and probably 5 teams could be relegation contenders .. we always hear all teams are capable of beating each other .. but are they ? .. We are becoming hard to beat but not looking likely to win .. A win against the red lichties on Saturday will hopefully kick start our revival to safety

For me it’s competitive but poor - the only team that’s impressed me is Arbroath. I expected more from Inverness, Kilmarnock and Raith - it just makes our present position even more galling.

It was me that said it. And I’m happy to own it 😂

For me, in all my time supporting the Pars, this is indeed the weakest Championship I have ever seen. There is no clear strong team that you immediately look at and think “they’ll have an impact in the premier league”. Not one. For me this exacerbates how sad our managerial situation - it’s a real opportunity to be doing well in this league against some utter dug meat teams….but we’ve found a way to make a right hoor of it.

The quality of the teams elsewhere is pretty poor. I’ve seen every game so far this season and yet to see a team out there where I think “yup - decent side”. Previous years away from the Hearts, United and Hibs, there have been quality other sides like QOS when they had Dobbie and Dykes, Falkirk before their implosion, Livingston and the impact they had. That’s just off top of my head.

Was maybe me making that comment. I said on the match thread that it was a very poor league this year. Mind you, on reflection it could just be the anti football we're playing. I've not seen a single minute of any other games. Could be some brilliant football being played elsewhere. Ours have largely been turgid affairs.

Not sure about the weakest ever, but its one of the poorest of the last 20-30 years I`d think, none of the teams at the top are particularly impressive, no large clubs and teams like QOS, Ayr etc don`t have the same quality of players they had in previous years.

The only thing I would say in the league`s defence is that there also no whipping boys (I know we are poor just now, but even so, we will eventually win some games and get up the table at least a little), no Brechin, Stirling Albion etc.
It`s certainly true that in each game, anyone can beat anyone...which makes are lack of wins all the more annoying/ridiculous....and unacceptable!

The quality of teams for me has definitely went down. Whether this has anything to do with budgets due to covid or not. The product is really poor. I would argue Arbroath is the best side I've watched us play this season.

Overall quality is probably fairly poor, with no real ‘star players’. But I’d argue that whilst the strongest teams are weaker than they have been in recent years, the weakest teams are better than they have been in previous years.

This results in a very competitive league and arguably the ‘quality’ probably balances out in comparison to previous years. 17-18 had Brechin, who certainly dragged down the overall quality.

If you’re talking about the quality required to win it however, I’d probably agree that it’s lower than it has been in the last 10 years or so.

Aye, I'd agree with that, in terms of the resources available to the competing clubs. Our closest challengers were Raith and Falkirk. Since then, there has been at least one big city club. The year after we lost the play off final to the Blue Brazil, the Championship contained Hearts, Hibs and Rangers2012.

There's allot to be said for timing, even when the likes of Ross County and Dundee in the league they skew it by having owners willing to write of vast sums.

I disagree that it’s the worst championship. What makes it a good championship? Just because there is a so called “big” team in it? Hearts were in it last year but they weren’t exactly great to watch.

I have never found the Championship/1st division enthralling or filled with teams playing silly football. Even when Hibs/Falkirk/Dundee United were competing for the title, it wasn’t great quality. It is what it is at the end of the day. If you want to win a league you need to win ugly.

Even going back to 2011 we had sticky patches but also had games where we played good football. Also it was a very tight league between us and the Rovers. Does that not make it a good championship compared to a team running away with it?

Every game is competitive, if not highly skilful. When you consider that the half time scores in all games on Tuesday night was 0-0, it says something about how tight things are and it emphasises that no matter who our manager is, that`s its going to take one almighty effort to get ourselves off the bottom. The teams immediately above us are not going to roll over. Morton drew 0-0 with the Partick Thistle team that put 6 past Hamilton and Hamilton have recovered enough from that to beat QoS. But why are so many writing us off against Arbroath. We`re unbeaten in 3 and statistics tell me we have to win soon.

The standard of football in the championship has been getting worse and worse over several years, very little quality in any of the teams.
It also doesn't help that prices to get in are bordering on a rip off for the "entertainment" on offer either.

The Raith fans seemed to enjoy the game the other night. I`ve seldom seen such an outpouring of enthusiasm after they scored. They certainly looked like they were getting their monies worth.

You can have enthusiasm and all the emotions of football at any level. Doesn’t detract from the awful quality of player and team this season I think ….

I take it you have played at the highest level Sergio? But I think we all have unrealistic expectations. We are spoiled by watching football at the very highest level almost on a daily basis. We`re watching players who are being paid several million a year while players in the Scottish championship are earning 10 to 40 thousand a year. The difference even on that scale is vast. What are we expecting?

I wouldn't argue that the standard of football is poor, Sergio, but I believe our perception is negatively influenced by being able to watch the best players in the world almost every day of the week, in the comfort of our own homes.

The first time I remember thinking a Pars game was quite a disappointing spectacle was a 2-1 League Cup win over Motherwell. I had watched the dazzling Mexico 70 WC in it's entirety just a month earlier......

I may be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time but I don't think out league structure helps and the lack of mobility between the leagues with only one up and one down automatically.

When you have such wide financial discrepancies between the leagues being relegated has a massive impact on a club's finances and gets worse once the parachute payment ends.

One bad season on the park and your club might be gone for a long time. I think the drive to put more money in fewer clubs hands and the attempt to eradicate so called meaningless games which takes the pressure off to an extent, has created a more negative style of play in general. Throw in the fact that playing teams 4 times a year is monotonous (for me at least) and there's not a lot to get excited about.

I used to go and watch a fair bit of lower league English games and I often enjoyed them much more than our games in Scotland.

I'd say the quality has improved in the second tier since I first watched the Pars (2007?) at this level, you routinely had a part time side at this level where they quite frankly, had no chance.

With the higher levels of fitness and quality of part time sides it's narrowed the gap, but I don't think the quality itself is always decreasing.

While Hearts last year weren't fantastic to watch, they were incredibly efficient.

Edit-2007 was the first time I clearly remember this level, memories of 1999 are hazy!

I’m not sure why the snide remark as I was only offering an honest opinion. I’m not expecting players on a couple hundred pounds a week to compete with EPL stars.

I hear you, GG. The night that we got cuffed at EEP by Spurs in the Texaco Cup, it suddenly dawned on me that our glory days were behind us and that the football we had grown used to no longer bore any relationship to what was being played at the top level in England.

More money has flown into the game as the years have gone by, and the gap has become a chasm.

It has now become an impossible chasm to cross. Will Aberdeen ever win a European trophy again or Dundee Utd beat Barcelona. Will the Pars rub shoulders with the Spanish greats or knock an English Premier team out of Europe? No! My dear old Grandad said many years ago in his Fife accent and typical Fife pessimism as he queued up at the Stark`s Park turnstile. "Money will ruin the game". Well it hasn`t completely ruined the game but it has produced elite teams which will never again be beaten by any aspiring upstarts like us. Many prophets of doom predicted the end long before now but the game goes on and still provides reasonable entertainment even at East End Park.

As a matter of comparison I`m watching the QPRv Forest Championship game and trying to notice how it compares with our games. I would have to say:-

Just as scrappy.

Same amount of long balls from back to front.

Very little going through midfield.

Plenty misdirected passes.

No real penetration from midfield

Forwards feeding off scraps

But one high point, great to see Lyndon Dykes head home the only goal of the first half.
