Good move this.

Someone who will pull no punches with the current squad and I fancy will raise the standards in training and fitness.

Hopefully he gets a wee budget for January to give him a fighting chance in the league.

Things will be looking up……..now yogi is gone!

Happy enough with that. Yogi is smarter than the average bear and will have learned from his experience at the San Starko.

All will be revealed in due course, but I believe some more popular choices among fans didn't apply.

Not sure about this at all. Last time he was in this division with a struggling side he took them from 8th to 9th, alienated most of the players, then managed to lose in the play offs to a Brechin side that couldn`t win a game at all the following season. This could either be a masterstroke or we could could up making Falkirk look competent.

To err is human, to fail to learn from your mistakes is foolish. Let's give him an opportunity to show that he has learned his lesson.

Giving him a contract until the summer of 2023 is my main concern but hopefully he’s a successful appointment.

Also the fact that Whittaker and Shields are still being kept on is possibly worrying.

Surely when you consider somebody`s competence for a job you put more weight on their recent experience rather than something which happened a few years ago? Last season Yogi achieved with Ross County exactly what we want him to do this season but in a tougher league.

It`s interesting that the statement on COWS goes into quite a lot of detail about the recruitment process!

Grant, I really don`t want to argue with you......but(!) you`ve made it clear you wanted McIntyre. You choose to focus on his record at this level 10 years ago, yet choose to dismiss Hughes` more recent superior (IMO) record at a higher level. You focus on Hughes` failure to keep Raith up 5 years ago, yet dismiss Hughes` success at keeping Ross County up a few months ago.

For the record, I`m not 100% convinced by this appointment but from the candidates mentioned Hughes is the best we could`ve hoped for, apart from possibly Robbo.

I’m with Andrew, and Grant, regards his stint at Rovers.
A manager who publicly flogs his team doesn’t sit well with me.

We need someone to instil confidence and get them playing better than they are capable of.

I must be in the minority with regards to the other 2 coaches Whittaker has only been part of the coaching staff since the end of last season so should be given the chance to learn his trade.

Greg Shields is supposed to be more involved with the youth team so hopefully he can move into that role when it's available.

But it does not upset me that they are both being kept on.

I see on twitter former player James Vincent someone who played under Hughes has said it's a great appointment so clearly Hughes style of management doesn't upset everyone.

I think it`s good that the announcement was made today ahead of tomorrow`s game. He might not have time to have much input into the preparation but it might give the squad a wee boost and an incentive to impress the manager.

As a matter of interest, does Yogi usually have an assistant who follows him to new jobs?

McIntyre wouldn't have been my first choice, but he's a far safer choice than Hughes. McIntyre also done pretty well at QoTS and County since he left us btw.

I don't dismiss Hughes achievement at Ross County, it's a good one. But the Raith one is a more similar situation to the one we find ourselves in. For me there's question marks over his squad building (took over a very good squad from Butcher at ICT, and left a very bloated and expensive one when he left) and his man management is hit or miss, there's been talks of player fallouts at Falkirk, Livingston, Hibernian and Raith Rovers. I'm not sure how he deals with players of a lower quality if you get what I mean? His desire to stick to a philosophy which may not suit the squad isn't an ideal one.

It's very much a boom or bust.

With that being said some patience is required, I'd expect tomorrow's team to be mainly taken by Whittaker and Shields, and it'll take time for Yogi to make his mark, I'm not going to be able to make a game for a couple of weeks due to work, hopefully I'll see us win a game when I get back, that'd be nice.

Has to be said you`re very selective in what stats you choose to support your very well-made points Grant

At Dundee "McIntyre was sacked on 12 May 2019, after the club had been relegated from the Premiership.[24] McIntyre managed just 4 wins in 31 games, giving him the worst win percentage in the club`s history.

There`s no way he`d be getting the backing of the majority of our fans if his name was announced today. It would be a different bunch of people making the same points on both side.

Aye McIntyre didn't do well at Dundee, took over a rough position which was made worse by the board selling there best player (Kamara) for 50k.

Any manager we appointed was going to have blemishes, if they were perfect they wouldn't be with us. For me it's about how those blemishes reflect our current standing.

McIntyre may be a manager who's not quite cut out for the prem, however there's no denying everytime he's been in the Championship he's done well, like AJ every manager has there level. And Yogi doesn't seem to do well in the championship for whatever reason.

The backing of the fans is a moot point IMO, as you can see by this thread McIntyre didn't even have the full backing of the fans while he was here, he wasn't a sycophant that played upto the gallery and he became manager in dubious circumstances, he still got us promoted because he was a capable manager.

Peter Grant didn't fail because he didn't have the backing of the fans (and I'd argue, the backing at games was very good) he failed because he wasn't good enough.

You could appoint someone like Robertson who would have the backing of the fans, if he loses his first 13 games do you think he'd still have it?

For any manager, if they do well they'll get lauded.

Not really getting the animosity towards Shields and Whittaker. Confident Yogi can turn things around.

Part of two "meh" managerial teams....and it's normal for managers to have their own guys in.
I guess we have to save money, I think people would just rather out with the old and in with thd new.
For me Shields was sullied and dragged into McIntyre's behaviour.

Maybe he thinks he can work with them? He probably already knows them & might think they can contribute. Or he might bring his own guys in further down the line.

Hughes is really well respected by people in the game, not just journos ,but managers and coaches, some at a much higher level than us, this is no guarantee of success, but is a good start.
All managerial appointments are a gamble, look at some huge clubs in Europe ,they can't get it right, one thing that is for sure ,us without almost complete backing from the fans the job is much harder.
I hope Hughes works out for us and will give him 100% backing as I do with Pars managers , but he has to be given some time,to sort out our current situation.

Cautiously optimistic but less confident about keeping a coaching set up that failed. I don't see what happens behind the scenes so I'm sure the board will have .side the right decision in retaining them.

Why shields and Whittaker are getting kept on is absolutely awful tbh, we need a fresh start

Whittaker is learning his trade, only being in the coaching business for a few months. Shields upped sticks from the states to come to us to be employed as youth team coach, this was put up in the air when the youth set up was put on hold, hardly his fault! He never signed up to sort PGs mess. What would be awful is if we were be to bin the two of them after failed promises to the both from the club. Shields had the youth team playing good football against stronger opposition and hopefully he can be the man to help them when the new youth programme is set up. He at least deserves a chance to fulfil what he was employed and turning his life upside down for.

I do wonder if out of the two managers who performed well in the interview if Yogi was a lot more accepting of the fact he wouldn’t be able to bring his own backroom team in?

"and it`s normal for managers to have their own guys in."

in bigger leagues and bigger clubs it might be but not really at this level with the last 5 jobs including us twice keeping the same staff, Hughes doesnt have a "team" and didnt take anyone with him to County either.

Raith, the "rant" probably didnt help but the club loaning Vaughan to Dumbarton before he got the job and the carry on with Ryan Stevenson in goal for a game because a director didnt know the rules on loans also didnt help.

anyway, good luck to him.

Can we stop banging on about his time at Raith, I watched his interview at the time and fully sided with him, yeah he slagged his players off publicly but that's because he felt they were short changing the club and fans with poor attitude and performance, Yogi was a jersey player and always fully committed to whom ever paid his wages, he expects nothing less from his players and that should be applauded. Clearly rovers players had formed a wee clique and didn't like his methods which led to his downfall there, players come and go and shouldn't rule the roost. Only time will tell whether it's the right appointment but I feel confident we'll start to climb the table.

There’s a much more professional way to deal with players’ grievances. If that’s how you prefer a new managerial appointment to deal with our team then so be it.

I wasn't convinced by Peter Grant but his first interview made me decide he deserves a crack at the job.
Although, the proof is in what will happen over the rest of the season I really, really enjoyed that interview with Yogi.

I really enjoyed that interview, breath of fresh air.

A thinly veiled “work hard and give your all or f*ck off, it’s my way or the highway”.

Exactly what is required I believe. If there are some in that squad who don’t want to play for the Dunfermline jersey we will be better without them.

I would like to believe the time of feeble excuses and accepting failure has come to an end.

You didn't need hindsight to know it was an unwise, and flat out bad interview.

Hindsight does show though it was so unwise he alienated the squad to such an extent they got relegated against the worst side to ever play at this level. It was awful man management. I'd rather our gaffer maybe didn't do that.

Interesting appointment that can go either way, not excited by the appointment, not disappointed either.

I will be backing him and hoping he can turn this mess around, his short term goal is bound to be getting us clear of relegation for a challenge next season.

Not reading much into his interview, actions speak louder than words and we all know what happened when many fell for the 8min Grant interview.

What’s good to see is he’s clearly very excited and willing to put the graft in, as did Grant, just hope it works out better.

He was interviewed by Rovers TV to give his opinion and by God he gave it, if players couldn't handle his honesty then they weren't fit to pull on the Jersey, footballers conduct their business for the public in full view and therefore should expect criticism in public, if they can't handle that then they've picked the wrong profession, take it on the chin and try harder.

So you wouldn't have a problem if nearing the end of the season, with us firmly in a relegation fight (but still with a chance of survival) Yogi just torched the squad in public, and got us relegated because he was leaving in the summer?

I've long since stopped caring about post match interviews, they rarely if ever serve as a vehicle of good for the team. At the very least I'd like the manager to not say anything so contentious that it breaks the working relationship between him and the players. You talk about players conducting there business in full view of the public and as such should just expect criticism, I'm sure they do, I'm also sure they don't expect it from the manager, what if the following week the captain had been interviewed and said "The manager is hopeless, we get no instruction from him and the training has been beyond dreadful", fair? What a load of nonsense, criticism should be kept in house, in the dressing room and on the training field. There was absolutely nothing to be gained from publically lambasting your players.

Grant was lauded by people on here for his interviews fwiw.

I don’t think anything he said was not true?
It may have been unwise, with hindsight, but he clearly had reached the end of his tether with some of them ?

You didn't need hindsight to know it was an unwise, and flat out bad interview.

Hindsight does show though it was so unwise he alienated the squad to such an extent they got relegated against the worst side to ever play at this level. It was awful man management. I'd rather our gaffer maybe didn't do that.

Hughes had played the players tune for weeks, the same bunch of players who took the mickey out of Gary Locke.
He moly coddled them, listened to them and got it thrown back in his face.
Hindsight didn't get them relegated, it was following the words of a player who didn't want him there and his influence on the rest of the squad

I’m fairly sure he had decided he was leaving at the end of the season whether they stayed up or not? I think he decided just to give them both barrels? I don’t have a problem with that because there is nothing worse than a player who thinks they are better than they actually are

So you wouldn't have a problem if nearing the end of the season, with us firmly in a relegation fight (but still with a chance of survival) Yogi just torched the squad in public, and got us relegated because he was leaving in the summer?

I'd have a big problem with that. Again, I'd really like us to not be relegated. You don't think there was a degree of the manager thinking they were better than they actually were?

It was horrific, I can only hope he's learned from it.

I’d hope the bad eggs were weeded out in January. ?
Players should be praised when it’s due and criticised when it’s deserved. What’s the issue ?

Just to confirm then -

Again, the interview came after they lost 5-0 to their relegation rivals which meant that the opportunity to escape from the play off was out of their hands.

You're a massive fan of asking questions without ever answering them eh? You posted saying you agreed with what he done at Raith, would you be happy if that happens this season? Yogi decides a few weeks out he's not staying past the summer, absolutely torches the squad and we get relegated by Falkirk in the playoffs? I can't imagine you would, nor would anyone in this thread.

Who was to blame at Raith is an interesting topic when you consider we've appointed one of the people involved in the relegation, I'm also concerned with how he does at Dunfermline which is why the parallels that can be drawn with the Raith situation, are worrying.

I hope he's learned from the situation because obviously he didn't get it right, I'd be content to have the most boring interviews in the world if it meant we were skelping teams on a Saturday.

It's a forum, a place for discussion, and then some posters get really angsty when you discuss things, odd.

I think I’ve already said that perhaps it was unwise with hindsight to have blasted them in public, but clearly it was a last resort ?

Players are given a clean slate when a new manager comes in. Why can’t we give a new manager a clean slate. ?

You have said you were happy with it, which is why I've asked you if you would be happy if that situation played out at Dunfermline. I just find it bizarre you said you were happy with it even with the benefit of hindsight.

Whenever we sign a new player people also look at their record and discuss whether they'll be a good signing or not. If we were to sign a player who in the not too distant past, had very publically fallen out with his teammates we would d

The post you had a go at me had absolutely nothing to do with John Hughes.

To be fair, if you want to analyse every word that comes out of Hughes` mouth, he`ll give you some ammunition. In the interview, unless I`m mistaken, he says at the start he`s not got a magic wand and then later states that he`s going to use his magic wand and/or start sprinkling gold dust.

Similarly, his Raith Rovers rant was a bit of a meltdown. However, he`s been in football management for the majority of the time since 2003 and I can`t remember his doing that before or since - which tends to hint that he was at his wit`s end rather than it being something he`s prone to do.

He wouldn`t have been my choice, but he does give us a chance of moving up the table. I think all he`s trying to convey in the interview is that you don`t start trying to play like Guardiola`s Barca when you`ve 7 draws and 6 defeats from 13 games in the Scottish 2nd tier. Instead, you get a side organised, hard-working, tough to play against and generally fighting hard in every game.

Look at Yogi at Raith, look at Billy Brown at East Fife.

Any examples of managers lambasting there players in public and it working out?

Did he lambast them a few days after he was in the job?
You make it sound that was the sole reason they went down ?

Two questions and you still can't answer my one.

No he didn't.

It was a pretty big reason, yes. They got relegated by the worst side to ever play at this level, a team that wouldn't win a game at this level.

I’ll be honest, Grant. I don’t really care who was to blame at Raith.
I’m only concerned about how he does with us
As has been said, we are a club bottom of the league. We were never going to attract an elite manager with an exemplary record.
Let’s give him a shot. Can’t be worse than what we have had to date ?

You're a massive fan of asking questions without ever answering them eh? You posted saying you agreed with what he done at Raith, would you be happy if that happens this season? Yogi decides a few weeks out he's not staying past the summer, absolutely torches the squad and we get relegated by Falkirk in the playoffs? I think some of them need to be fundamentally better as men/people/adults/mammals to become better footballers.

When you grow up and identody you’re ssues you find a way to be better in all areas of life including your career. Some of them may well have habits or situations outside of football they need to alter to be all they can be as a professional. That’s for each of them to analyse themselves. Have they settled into being generally lazy? Why? Etc. They are less likely to do this when there excuses being made for them. They have an opportunity to improve here. I hope many of them take it and are up to it. The ones that don’t will find themselves out the door sooner or later.

I stopped making excuses and faced some hard truths about 18 months ago and every area of my life has improved exponentially since.

Would you prefer honest interviews post match or the inane drivel we've been treated to by Crawford and Grant for last 3 years?

There is a reason the manager is called the MANAGER, it's not rocket science, the buck stops with them so they have to make the decisions and shoulder the responsibility, if a player (who's being managed by a MANAGER) thought he could criticise the manager then it's bye bye, just like in any other walk of life, not saying that right or fair but it is how it is, simple

Grant, you do know that Brechin we’re in a rich vein of form when they defeated Raith (and Alloa) in the play offs? It was the next season that was such a disaster for them.

Maybe Yogi’s interview was a mistake - we all make them - the most successful managers learn from them.

We get that you’re not happy with the appointment - I think you’ve made your point though.

Personally, I’m delighted he’s here and I loved his enthusiasm in the interview.

Grant….clearly he has learnt from the mistake as he was in an equally similar position last season with Ross County and performed a mini miracle. Id say if you do the same thing 5 years later and it works then lesson learned……

I was at both the playoff matches between Brechin and Raith, and the Brechin success was pretty much down to two players - Jean-Yves M'voto of Raith (who gave away 2 of Brechin's goals with abject defending) and Brechin's keeper Graeme Smith (who saved 3 penalties in the shoot--out). There wasn't much any manager could have done.

I was at that Rovers game at Starks Park, Mvoto totally sold the jerseys in the home leg, nothing a manager could do about that, they also had enough chances to win 4 games. I did not like it when he slated players in a tv interview and basically called them wage thieves.

In the five games leading upto the playoffs they had won once, drawn twice and lost twice, with the two losses being a 3-1 defeat from Airdrie, and a 6-1 scudding from Alloa. They lost more games than they won that season, finishing fourth in league one.

So AJ, you do know that Brechin were on an average, if not poor run of form when they defeated Raith? You do now.

Like I've said consistently, it was a mistake, I hope he's learned from it, if he has we're all the better for it. He's had ups and downs through his career, we could do with us being an up.

But the re writing of history with regards to Hughes and that Raith season is wild. How can we expect Hughes to have learned from it if you've got fans thinking he done the right thing? Wild.

Well then.

I was strangely unmoved when I read this. Possibly because my head says “yes” and my heart says “no”. I’ve never been a big fan of Yogi (though I’ve never met him) – nothing to do with his Falkirk or Raith connections - but he ticks a lot of boxes, seems popular with a lot of support, and is the sort of manager I was advocating. He wouldn’t have been my top choice (although my track record would probably have been worse than the board’s), but who knows, if I’d been on the board I might have picked him.

Anyway, he has my backing now.

(As for the coaching staff – it’s difficult to know to what extent they are culpable for our under-performance or not, but I tend to favour continuity, so am content with them carrying on).

I do like Yogi, met him and Gordon Marshall on a night out in George Street a few years back, and he is a great laugh.
Good interview. I particularly like the stuff about the players winning their individual battles and "manning up". I think that his been an issue for us over the past few years. Too many players shirking responsibility and not standing up for themselves. When things have got tough we have had players that have gone into hiding, that's not on, we need battlers.
Possibly some people won't like the language (toxic masculinity indeed) used when he talks about being men and manning up, but in my opinion it's spot on. It's what is needed

Let’s be honest here his style of management will only upset the guys who canny handle the roasting that will come their way for not doing what is asked of them

As for his stint at the rovers I used the gym at the Michael woods Center in Glenrothes a few times when the rovers team trained their and a few of the players seemed more interested in having a carry on rather than actually working so it’s no surprise that we went public with his criticism of them

Baffled as to why some people have a problem with this appointment, who else would we get? Petrie? No chance. Robbo? You can’t bring someone in who’s potentially not in the right head space or doesn’t have the same level of interest at any time especially when your in a relegation battle. You won’t get much more experienced and committed managers as yogi. Proof will be in the pudding but in yogi I think we’ve got a very good manager with credentials arguably better than anyone we’ve had in the last decade. Pars are going up

As I’ve said on here before, I think a lot of people simply can’t take Yogi seriously due to his demeanour and the way he talks. He’s more like a guy off a building site than a manager who normally just bored us with meaningless cliches. I think Hughes is the best appointment we could have made. I’ve always liked the guy he seems to be. Once he gets shot of the utter dross that’s on the playing staff we will do well under him. Looking forward to the future now. He needs time though so hopefully the more intellectually challenged element of our support understand that.

I`m with the majority on here and feel Yogi is the type of manager we need. I don`t understand the negativity about the backroom team though. Really do we know what guidance/instructions they got from PG?

I think Yogi`s a different type of manager and will get more out of the players and coaching staff, they will know what is required and I feel they will be better equipped to do their jobs under Yogi. He needs time but equally he needs support from the board and fan`s. Realistic short term targets.... Let`s go it`s game on COYP

I dont want to believe our players are utter dross.
I think they have been managed badly and lost direction and confidence. Hopefully Yogi can bring the best out of them and they can enjoy their jobs again.

It really wont help him in his task if the people who are supposed to encourage them continue to refer to them as utter dross.

Lets get behind ALL OF THEM.

I agree,

I’ve seen enough patches in games where we’ve played well enough to make me think that with the right system, clear roles for players plus someone who can install belief that they can do it and the grit to see games out then we could defo get out this predicament

PS I believe yogi can do this for us

Didn`t he say he thought the players just lacked confidence? I don`t think he even mentioned the January transfer window did he, yet we already have posters on here who seem to think the only solution to our problems is to have a mass clear-out.

“Baffled as to why some people have a problem with this appointment”

Might be something to do with his managerial record over last 5 years. Over that period 2 half season jobs one which went sideways and for the other one the board at county couldn’t show him the door quick enough. I’m backing the pars board though that they have seen something the rest of Scottish football and beyond have missed.

We haven’t played as a team this season, we’ve been so disjointed it’s unreal. I’m sure he will be able to fix that and then it’s inwards and upwards because we have enough good players IMO.

John Robertson was my 1st choice for our new manager but Yogi was a close 2nd. Very please with this announcement.

Confident that Yogi can get us playing and we won't be going down now. He's inherited an absolute howler of a squad though where confidence is rock bottom. I still think he can get the best out of the lads though.

Amazing what a decent appointment from the BOD can do though. I'm very pleased with Yogi whereas with Grant I was utterly depressed. COYP.

I`ve been critical of the BoD in the past but they`ve got this appointment spot on. Yogi is the right man for this club at this time. His approach to football is simple - work hard, work for each other and enjoy yourself and he won`t accept any passengers in the team. Can`t ask for more than that
