I could hardly believe it when, after the highlights, they showed flashbacks to the 1966 WC winners. Of course England have never experienced the degree of humiliation we suffered with Ally McLeod, but I would have thought they`d have learned something from Iceland, not to mention many other significant humblings they`ve had in tournaments. Maybe the players aren`t that nuts but some o` the media are just like absurd, silly bairns.

Wouldn’t call Poland Very poor incase they dispose of Scotland in the play offs. Do agree though they get it easy in qualifying but it does help being in the top seeded pot every time.

England always seem to get good qualifying draws. They obviously have the advantage of being the top seed most of the time, but the draws seem to be kind to them.
The last time they had a difficult one was in 2008 when they were up against Russia and Croatia, and they didn`t qualify.

They are a decent team, though. It`s just that there always seems to be a big gap between how good they are and how good the TV pundits think they are.

I wonder what guys like Charlton, Lineker, Shearer etc make of Kane bagging 7 goals in a few days against cannon fodder?
I don’t think there were any minnows to compare in their time ?
Of course, Kane has already surpassed greats like Greaves and Hunt.

If I was an England fan I`d be fairly satisfied with them at the moment. Their Fifa ranking fifth is about right. But I think the heat of Qatar will probably count against them, as it would Scotland, should we make it. The English media might take that into account before they get too carried away.

There was plenty of cannon fodder around in Charlton & Greaves` day.

Also, Albania both qualified for and won a game in Euro 2016, so they`re not quite the minnows they used to be.

For many years England qualified for major tournaments under the likes of Capello, Eriksson and Hodgson but were unconvincing in the qualifying games. Southgate has done a great job of turning England in to a side that gives a doing to the opponents who should, on paper, get a doing.

Harry Kane is a good goal scorer but also a world class diver and cheat. He always gets the decisions too. Remember they had to cheat to beat Denmark in the euros. They rate themselves higher than they should as they are ignorant of other leagues and countries. They’ve believed their own propaganda for too long.

England got an resort group but no one can argue they didn't perform

it's perhaps not the best measure of how they'll perform when they get there, but any England fan will be pleased with the performance and looking forward to a good run in the tournament

And why shouldn't the media start building the team up?

Is it really any different to us? - we’re getting very excited after a good run of results against teams which we should really be expecting to beat (and a considerably weakened Denmark side) - and the TV and radio commentary has been hugely pro Scotland - quite right too. Let’s enjoy while we can and stop worrying about the England fans getting too excited.

I don't dispute that, DA-go, but the home nations rarely played them, but tended to fill up their international dates with their own tournament. I don't remember games v the likes of Andorra, Gibraltar and Lichtenstein for Scotland and England in the 60s, although San Marino may have been in there.

San Marino has never won a competitive match. They were recently beaten 3-0 at home by Andorra. It was Andorra's first ever win away from home in a competitive match.
The English media are printing and broadcasting what it thinks the majority of its customers want to be presented with.
We unfortunately get more exposure to that media than we should and have to endure it.
The schadenfreude when the team loses is worth waiting for though. The closer they get to winning a tournament the greater the disappointment when they are gubbed.

I’d agree with most of that…

We voted to remain in the union and given the demographics for the uk media, for every one Scottish person their is about 11 English people, we get the coverage we should expect ie ‘uk/English’ customer focused

Sorry but I disagree,
6 wins on the spin, when was the last time we achieved this? beat Austria home & away plus Israel & Denmark (they might have put out a weaker than normal team but don’t think for a minute they expected to lose or even draw…….. the “beautiful game” is a matter of national pride for every country & add to that we had 7 players on yellows that had to watch their step against Denmark that would have undoubtably held those players back a bit on tackles etc

The media are a bunch of b******s, & as always will be poised to jump on the teams back when they stutter but I think we should celebrate Scotland’s success at every opportunity at the moment
England are the Auld Enemy & we are the wee team so it’s our birthright to moan & bleat where appropriate, often even when it’s not!!!
……….. Our great run will come to an end at some point & we will crash back to earth with a bump……… but until then 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Notwithstanding the above, Steve Clarke has built up a team of players who believe in themselves & work for each other, things that have been missing from our squad for best part of 20 years…… long may this continue, although we are Scotland & should expect a few bumps on our current fantastic journey

You can't blame anyone for celebrating a 10 nil win, no matter how poor the opposition.
I would bet Everyone on here jumped of there seat to celebrate a Lyndon Dykes 86th minute goal to beat the Mighty Faroes 0-1 around 5 weeks ago

You can`t compare the Faroes with San Marino any more though. The Faroes were not the bottom seeds in our group, did not finish bottom of the group and gave everyone at least one competitive game. They`ve also done well in the Nations League recently.

I couldn`t care about the English media celebrating an English win. Why wouldn`t they?

What really gets on my t1ts & has done for years? They show the games live on ITV1 even though there are 3 other ITV channels, then at 10.30 they show the highlights of the same game first including in depth analysis, then as was the case on Monday night, cram our excellent & far more important win in to the last 10 minutes, including virtually no discussion about it.

Pr1cks.

Da it’s UK media (not English media) and your complaint is exactly what they should do given the demographics of their audience.

The other “home nations” games are of little or no interest to c.90% of the UK audience

What people are touching on here is an issue that happens in many things. In Scotland we have BBC Scotland, in Wales they have BBC Wales, in England they have...the BBC. Well, they actually have it broken up into various regions. There is no BBC England, there is no NHS England, there is no English Parliament.

DBP - I bet if you conducted a straw poll 90% of the VIEWERS (not just football fans) in the UK wouldn`t want to watch San Marino v England live instead of the normal schedule - that`s one of my points. ITV2, 3 & 4 are full of utter cr@p 7 days a week - why not leave ITV1 alone & stream this glorified training game on one of their other channels.

And if you had sat & watched the 10-0 horsing of a pub team for nearly 3 hours then half an hour later sat back down & watched full highlights for another 40 minutes you really need a very swift boot in the balls, in my very honest opinion.

My guess is that the folk who tuned in for the highlights program will have been wanting to see the England highlights because they didn’t watch the full live game

Edited to say I agree about interrupting the BAU schedule… but that’s a different thing for me and doesn’t change what games they should show both live or as highlights

I wonder what his goals scored to games played ratio stands at ?

Nowadays England (like most every other nation) play far more competitive matches each year than they ever did back in the 1960s.

That is OK in theory VEE, scotlands top Goalscorers are still Kenny Dalglish and Dennis Law , both on 30 goals
Our nearest contender that is still playing is John McGinn who still needs 19 more goals to reach that total

Kane has scored 48 in 67 appearances at a ratio of 0.71. Of the top five England goalscorers, only Greaves has a better ratio, 44 goals in 57 appearances at a ratio of 0.77.

There were still the likes of Luxembourg, the Scandinavians were useless as were sides like Albania - and three of Bobby Charlton's goals came in an 8-1 win away at Switzerland, which hints that they were pretty hopless too.

There may not have been minnows, but there was plenty of hammerings.

Just one example - England beat Turkey 8-0 twice in the 1980s. Fifteen years after the second 8-0 game, Turkey finished 3rd at the world cup...

Many of these new countries only exist as figments of NATO imagination. They are political constructs. They do not really exist: unlike Scotland,

The best example is the former Yugoslavia which now has two strong teams: Croatia and Serbia. Yet while they have been carved up by NATO politics to become smaller, the other rabbits like San Marino have been encouraged to become smaller in the name of nationalism! It is, in football terms, pathetic.

And the NATO BBC celebrates a mismatch as bad as Mike Tyson fighting his sister in the pretence of international sport and showing shows slo mo versions of the cruelty. It`s not far short of pornography.

Let`s not forget one of Jimmy Greaves finest moments: banging in a hat trick against the minnows of Scotland in a 9- 3 slaughtering in 1961.

Funny thing thing is, Greaves never came close afterwards against these same minnows! Against Scotland he played four more games, lost three, drew one and managed but one goal. Maybe the rabbits of the 1960s had more teeth than the modern variants.

To compare Northern Ireland (George Best), Wales (John Charles) or Scotland of the 1960s with the modern day Andorra or San Marino is football illiteracy. It`s NATO propaganda. Desist please.

The former Yugoslavia were always a useful side, based on decent clubs like
Dinamo Zagreb, Partisan Belgrade and Red Star Belgrade.

Celtic always said their best opponents in the 1967 EC were Vojvodina.

The San Marinos and Faroes etc. of this world never had that background.

Yugoslavia back in the day were like Holland or Portugal today: good technical sides who could beat anybody on their day but might wilt when faced with a top class side in a semi final or final. Croatia have actually been stronger then Yugoslavia ever was.

A no contest is not football and should be stopped. It is disgusting. Anyone who turns up so see such a non event must have sadistic tendencies. A pre-qualifying arrangement would prevent these perversions.

Utter nonsense as far as the interpretation of the Yugoslav Wars is concerned.

It was "Yugoslavia" that was the political construct - it was created in 1918, never having existed before. During WW2 the ethnic tensions between Croats and Serbs erupted into a multi-faceted civil war with several competing armies. There was genocide and ethnic cleansing of Serbs and Muslims by Croats, Croats by Serbs and Montenegrins, Jews and Roma by Muslims and Croats, Slovenes and Croats by Italians, as well as Serbs and Jews by Hungarians and any non-Aryans by Germans. It was only the iron hand of Tito after WW2 that held the country together. Once he was dead it began to unravel.

As for external forces creating these countries, by the time the United Nations got involved in 1993, independence had already been declared by Slovenia, Croatia and Macedonia (in 1991) with Bosnia following in 1992. NATO was not involved until 1999, during Kosovo`s war for independence.

It`s probably fair to say that Bosnia & Herzegovina is "artificial" in that it still has a very mixed ethnic population, and there is a chunk of the country (Republika Srpska) effectively governed by ethnic Serbs. Kosovo is also "artificial" in that most of the people are ethnic Albanians, just as what is now North Macedonia is largely ethnic Greek - their existence is a compromise to end the wars.

But none of the Yugoslav Wars was caused, started or encouraged by NATO or other external forces, and the only reason that other nations eventually went there was in attempts to stop the "Yugoslavs" killing each other.
