Quite remarkable really in the modern game :-
Robert Lewandowski equalled Gerd Muller`s Bundesliga record for goals scored in a single calendar year as Bayern Munich thrashed Stuttgart.
Lewandowski`s second goal on Tuesday was his 42nd in 2021, matching Muller`s haul from 1972.
Serge Gnabry scored either side of half-time to put the visitors 2-0 up, before Lewandowski struck twice in three minutes.
Germany international Gnabry completed his hat-trick two minutes later.
One more goal in Bayern`s final game of the year - at home to Wolfsburg on Friday - will give Lewandowski the record outright.

Gerd Muller is an iconic name in German football. He hit a phenomenal 398 goals in 453 league games for Bayern during a 15-year spell at the club.
He also scored 68 goals in 62 appearances for West Germany.
His total record for Bayern was a Bundesliga record. He was nicknamed Bomber der Nation (The Nation’s Bomber).
Muller hit 40 goals in the 1971-72 season. Like Lewandowski in 2020-21, that was achieved in a 34-game season.

Thanks Buspasspar.
So, if Lewandowski does the business on Friday he sets the new record for a calendar year without the asterisk being needed ?

I watched Gerd Muller play at Ibrox against Rangers, in 1972, in the semi final of the European Cup Winners Cup. One of the best games I ever saw. Muller was playing with a plaster cast on one of his arms. Doubt if that would be allowed now. I think Rangers won 2-0. The noise was deafening, in the sense that I couldn`t hear properly for about an hour after the game was finished. Not surprising when you realise the crowd was reportedly 80,000 squeezed into Ibrox but I reckon it was more. Bayern Munich also had Franz Beckenbauer. Rangers went on to win the cup. It`s good to be able to remember a time when Scottish teams could beat the best teams in Europe because several players in that Bayern team including Muller were truly world class.

Yes, that was great watching that again VEE. When you get a view of the crowd they look like they`re packed in like sardines. No wonder there was a disaster but the noise and the atmosphere was amazing.

Robert Lewandowski scored his 43rd Bayern Munich goal of 2021 to break Gerd Muller`s record for the most Bundesliga goals in a calendar year.
The Poland striker, 33, volleyed home three minutes from time as Bayern thrashed Wolfsburg 4-0 at Allianz Arena.
Muller`s achievement of 42 Bundesliga goals in a year had stood since 1972.
