Match thread: DAFC 2-0 Raith Rovers FT !!
Topic Originator: buffy
Date:   Wed 6 Apr 18:26

With the other thread going slightly askew (as normal 😂) thought I’d start a new one. Hope that’s ok.

I’m on live updates the night - and still having post covid fatigue so please be gentle. My junior McCaig’s Tower will be nearby to keep an eye on me (and get the snacks in too, hopefully).

Hoping I don’t need wellies (!) I’m going for a pars 2-1 win.

It is harsh on Mehmet, but perhaps the loan deal for Jakub was concluded on the understanding that he would be first choice whenever he was available?

It surprises me that Hughes claims there are angry players on the training ground who aren`t get a chance but a raring to go. That`s (I think) 4 weeks now where we haven`t changed the team. 1 fantastic performance but the rest were average. What do the other players have to do to get a chance? Why claim there is competition in the squad when it never changes?

Bit of much needed luck for the goal there but great composure from O`Hara. Could be much more comfortable if Lawless put in that sitter! Hopefully we can keep it up in the second.

Brilliant result but we must keep this momentum going! It will be difficult but we have to goto Rugby Park and go for all three points. On our day we`re more than capable! We maybe just need to be more clinical on Saturday. We dominated the majority of the game tonight and 2-0 flattered Raith.

Best laugh of the night was hearing John McGlynn on the radio in the car on the way home. Kept saying that there wasn`t much between the two sides and it was an even match. Must still be pissed from Sunday. Even the presenter of the show burst out laughing when addressing the comments with Jim Duffy & Leanne Crichton.

Great performance , great win and badly needed.

Lawless and Chalmers to a lesser extent were….well average….the rest played really well.

Col Donaldson is one of the best CH I have seen at EEP in a long time. He is so composed and deceptively quick, dominant in the air. I really hope we can keep him next season. Polworth gets better with every game.

O’Hara and Pybus were outstanding. Just goes to show what a bit of confidence can do. Pybus was not too impressive in the first half of the season but has really come on to a game and does all that “ dirty” stuff really well.

I wonder why O’ Hara could not get a look in for weeks ? It’s not just because of his goals tonight but his work rate is phenomenal and he has a great turn of pace. Not the most skilful but he more than makes up for that with his effort.

Have to mention DT too. Great work rate and a player who can do the unexpected. Top marks again.

We have to be looking at six points against Ayr and QoS at home….taking nothing for granted though and I still feel we might need points on the road too.

Can we get them at Rugby Park or Firhill ? Yes, but only if we put in a performance like tonight and not the flat performance that we had at Inverness.

Bring on Sat. I have a sneaky feeling we will get something there…..hopefully.

JH might bring Dorrans back in but as he has not even made the bench recently then that must be doubtful.

Get Coll signed up as soon as possible. The man is a colossus.

That`s 3 great performances at EEP gaining 7 points. If we play like that in the remaining home games we SHOULD be getting another 6.

Think we`ll need at least 1 more point to finish above Ayr.

Rovers couldn`t have complained if it had been 4-0.
That said I was a little worried when they started to put us under a bit of pressure second half but the goal came at a good time. We should be scoring when we are 3 v 2 on the break.

O’Hara‘a preference was to play with another striker, however he has been asked to play up front on his own. It’s just been a question of Kevin working hard in training and adapting to the new role

Out worked Raith. The amount of times the ball was won in their half was impressive.

A very good performance from start to finish.

Play like that, you win plenty enough games and definitely so at home.

Our work rate again was very good. Wingers like Thomas and Lawless work back to win the ball. O’Hara occupies two centre backs. Our full backs spend more time in the opposition half than their own.
You can see the team spirit and camaraderie from the stands.

We were excellent in the first half. What impressed me most was the ability to mix it up. We played intricate passes in tight spaces at times, played through the lines at times and hit long cross field balls to the likes of Todd, who played almost as a right winger when we had the ball.

Defensively, we were solid. Pybus drops in to give us three at the back when our full backs are bombing forward.

The only criticism is we still don’t get enough men in the box from midfield

Overall, a well deserved win and the momentum is with us.

Hughes has done very well and made some shrewd recruitments.

PS. Only 40 posts.

Great performance - should have won much more easily. I thought Todd was outstanding, especially in the first half and also thought Chalmers had a good game. The work rate from the whole team was fantastic - I only caught the end of the coverage on the radio on the way home but it sounds as if they were really impressed by us.

Huge game on Saturday now.

Always open to changing my opinions on players, he`s been very, very good the past three home games, wasn`t great up at Inverness but no one was.

We`ve been playing good football for weeks now but individual errors and lapses in concentration have prevented us from turning good performances into good results. Tonight we were `on it` for pretty much the full game. There was some delightful passing but also impressive pressing and support play all over the pitch.

It`s disappointing that such a good performance and result gets a pretty lukewarm response on here but not surprising. Some posters are strangely silent after a good show. I`ve never really understood it.

Can we play every game in midweek?

Great stuff tonight. The Rovers were awful but I`d say that was our best of the season.

I find Dan Pybus to be a very easy player to like. What a display from him tonight, breaking up play everywhere and on top of that he was pretty good with the ball as well. I thought he was our best player when the team as a whole was awful at the start of the season, and even on days like today when the team as whole is much better, he`s still standing out. Something like what Aaron Comrie was lilke in the two previous seasons. Those who know me, either in real life or from my posts here, won`t be surprised that I value that sort of play more highly than the supposedly more skilful flicks and tricks of others.

Chalmers is a player I`ve struggled to take to so far, but he had a good game tonight, first half in particular. He just hasn`t done it often enough, but when I see him play like that I can see what he can bring to the team.

Lawless and Polworth were both poor with the ball, but both made up for it to some degree with their running and pressing. The footballistas routinely use the phrase `runs around a lot` as a dismissal of a player, but running in the right areas at the right times contributes a lot defensively to the team. Our pathetic inability to defend as a team has irritated me hugely for much of this season, so obviously I`m pleased to see it. Kevin O`Hara has also done that well in the last two home games.

I`ve been ridiculously nervous about this game all day, so nice to calm down after a good result. We could do with putting some results together, so even a point on Saturday would make abig difference to our season.

Great performance from the whole team tonight, couldn`t fault any of them for effort, Yogi has instilled a great work effort in them. Good to see O`Hara getting a couple of goals, he did quite well despite being isolated at times, he was frustrating me quite a lot getting caught offside, not making many decent runs or finding space for himself when we are looking to find someone in the box. That said, he didn`t always have a lot of bodies in the box to take defenders away from him either. Can`t fault him for effort though, run himself into the ground. Todd had a good game too, and Ambrose has that knack of positioning himself so that the ball just seems to go right to him from the oppositions attack. Not such a fan when he tries to overplay it out from the back though, got caught out a few times, heart in the mouth stuff- he`s probably been responsible for more heart attacks than the covid vaccine

I think what impressed me most about tonight was that we continued to press and win the ball right up to the end and didn’t drop hopelessly deep for any long period of time. Hopefully this is a sign confidence is building at a crucial point in the season to hold out and win matches. Sure, we are still making some poor decisions in 3v2 or 2v1 situations but at least these situations are happening far more often. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that our chance creation and performances have greatly improved (ICT match aside) since Dom has returned to the starting XI.

Don`t know about others but I tried to log in last night and the page wouldn`t load.

Anyway, yeah a good win. I was a bit worried when we hadn`t scored the second and Raith came back into it in the first half of the second half but they never really created anything in that spell and in the end we were comfortable. Should have been even more comfortable of course but we butchered some chances. We can`t afford to pass up chances like that if we`ve to survive. Also continue to have kittens whenever Ambrose is in possession, and we were lucky they didn`t capitalise on his mistakes the way we did with their defence. Donaldson bailed him out on more than one occasion and looks a great centre back. Hopefully if we do stay up we can get him back next season.

The best part of last night was our energy levels and the work we did off the ball. We had an interesting shape with Todd really high up, letting Zanatta go. The high press worked and when they did get higher up the pitch we won it back and got going really quicker meaning we always looked dangerous in transition. It will have taken a lot out of us and we`ll be missing Polworth on Saturday so it`s hard to see us getting anything at Killie but you never know. Even a point could be crucial.

Great display and much needed result. Could have been more but still delighted.

A lot of balls played into penalty spot but no one there to capitalise, so maybe we were playing it a bit safe in terms of committing men forward?

Still felt like we played 10 mins too long with initial line up that were clearly getting fatigued, but they kept rovers at bay!

If we can at least match Ayr result on Saturday then means we play them to go above them!

Hitting some decent form at the right time / will probably have another slip up but if we can keep playing as we did last night? then we should escape into 8th

I enjoyed the game last night. Thought we played some really nice intricate stuff at times. Very pleasing to watch. The worrying point for me was when in the Second half we dropped back slightly and could have been punished with the ball across goal, but we picked it up and went again.
Consider the thought if there is no points change between us and Ayr this weekend. The Ayr game at an Easter weekend will be massive.

Magic, the players are certainly up for it, played the Rovers off the park.

Just more of the same, can`t ask for more.

"A lot of balls played into penalty spot but no one there to capitalise, so maybe we were playing it a bit safe in terms of committing men forward?"

It`s something I said last night as well. I don`t think it`s a case of playing safe, more that we don`t have the type of midfielder with an eye for a goal, that`s prepared to make runs into the box?

It`s something that I feel we have been lacking all season, because if we have only one up top and that striker makes a run down the channels, then it`s imperative that guys like Thomas, Lawless, Polworth etc, burst a gut to get into a scoring position.

For me, it`s the main reason why we have been dominating possession in recent weeks, without the rewards, in some cases.

Not too many Bryan Robson types going around these days!

Don`t get this we will be lucky to get anything at Killie stuff. They are nothing special and we should have won there last time. If we play like last night and convert out chances, Killie will be lucky to take anything out of the game!

I wondered about the lack of posts just before the end of the match. I reset the server apps (Apache and Mysql) and I think that helped.

was hoping to have made progres on new software for the forum but hopefully that can get done in May and June.

That 2nd goal could prove vital. It draws us level on GD with Ayr, and hopefully instilled belief that we can finish teams off - and our luck has changed (for the better).

I`m gutted I was unable to see the game as a carefully arranged family holiday went mammaries up when the game was switched from Saturday, but delighted to hear the performance matched the result.

I thought Polworth was signed to support the main striker? He hasn`t scored yet but he does play ahead of the other midfielders and was able to capitalise on a mistake last night and set up the first goal. All the criticism about not playing two strikers seems to have calmed down a bit since Yogi settled on this formation but he`ll have to find a different solution on Saturday with Polworth being unavailable. Maybe he`ll withdraw O`Hara from the main striker role and play McCann or Kwama up top or he could make a straight swap with Cole for Polworth?

Anyone understand the big argument between Polworth and the bench last night. They were having a good old ding dong in the second half

Our midfield dominated that game last night, it was wonderful to view. Pressing up top was brilliant and the defence bar one or two moments had nothing to worry about. The amount of running pybus and Ohara did was a thing of beauty

Ps I love Dom Thomas

My first game in person since Dec 19 after not being able to travel over from USA.

What a great night and the atmosphere was brilliant. Well done to the NW boys, having to queue for 15 mins before kick off just added to the excitement and buzz of the big game atmosphere. Really felt like a proper derby.

I thought Donaldson was excellent and really covered ambrose who looked a yard off the pace on defensive recovery, on the ball he strolls it and when the build up is slow his positioning is top class its just the quick transitions that were slow.

The pressing and intensity from front to back was amazing. If ever there was a demonstration of attacker is first line of defence was last night. It should have been 4 tho with the 2 one on ones we missed.

Dom Thomas had a little bit of devilish magic about him last night, really toyed with the full back, Todd was like a 2nd winger bombing on just needs to work on final ball a bit more consistent.

My MOM was Chalmers tho.... he was so composed and elegant on the ball. Really moved it well and helped set the tempo for us. His movement into spaces and the way he played thru the lines onto the receivers back foot almost every time was really good and allowed us to keep possession and move up the park. Defensively took up good positions as well and covered when the full backs bombed on.

Can`t wait for killie away this weekend.

So, it seems that we have a similar number of posts here (a discussion of a game we won well) to the total number for the Inverness game (where we were terrible and lost) despite a server issue that meant there were far fewer posts during the game last night than normal. Do those who were moaning or expressing disappointment about a lack of comments after a good win perhaps want to accept that they might have been talking nonsense?

Or it could be that it`s not like for like - a derby game with 4,000+ Pars fans watching vs maybe a couple of hundred who saw the Inverness game.

If we`d been horsed 2-0 last night, there may have been more than 70 posts the afternoon after. We`ll never know.

There may have been more posts but that because of the implications of a loss right now in our current predicament.

…although the Inverness game was just as crucial to our league survival so maybe not

Can we just knock this potential argument on the head now?

We’ve won a key game, we’ve given ourselves a good fighting chance, we’re all happy and looking for more of the same in the last few games left

Let’s not start a new division by bickering

I just get frustrated that there always seems to be folk who want to have a wee go at others after we have a good result. I know I can justifiably be accused of the same here, but I`m doing so in reaction to things that people actually have said, rather than what they haven`t. There was plenty of discussion after the Partick Thistle game, though that match thread seems doesn`t seem to appear in the list of links above, for some reason.

We won last night and played really well. I just want us all to be able to enjoy that. But point made, so I`ll leave it at that as well.

I just think it`s human nature for there to be way more discussion after a poor result, especially when there`s the undercurrent of managerial change as well.

Can`t really add to anything anyone else hasn`t said already about last night. We were solid and it was very enjoyable!

This post sums it up for me.

After a poor result you`ll likely have disagreements, and that`s what drives the discussion.

Whereas last night, we won, everyone`s happy because everything went well, what`s there to discuss?

Mostly that they have one hand on the title now, we have just had an energy sapping Derby game and one of our key players in the new system can`t play. Don`t get me wrong, it`s not impossible but they will start heavy favourites and rightly so.

That’s the most I’ve enjoyed watching us this season. Brilliant.

I actually fancied us to win last night for a change and told my mate on the way up.

Yogi has improved us massively and deserves credit for picking through the wreckage, adding some parts and getting us up and running. January rebuilds aren’t easy. He’s done well. We look like a very capable team at times now.

I love to see us press high and control games. The rovers really wanted to play out from the back at times and we refused to let them. We forced them to punt it up the park for Efe and Coll to send back.

Had better options been picked a few times it could have easily been more.

Play like that for the rest of the season and we stay up without hanging to suffer a relegation playoff.
