Another disgraceful performance from the sleaziest team I have ever witnessed. They seem to carry on their reputation for being the worst behaved team and worst losers in football history, down through the generations.

Those of us of a certain vintage will know you are alluding to Atletico`s Champions Cup semi-final tie v Celtic in 1974. Their display in the first leg at Parkhead is possibly the most disgraceful I`ve ever seen. (I didn`t see last night`s game, but the reports are quite damning.) At least last night the thugs didn`t win. In 74, Atletico finished with 9 men. The hopelessly inadequate Turkish ref belatedly produced 2 red cards in the final 10 mins but the Spaniards held out for a 0-0 and won 2-0 in the return.

I don`t know why Atletico resort to these tactics, they have more than enough talent to beat the vast majority of opponents, especially at home. In some ways, they are reminiscent of some Argentinean club sides from the 60s, who disgraced themselves in inter-continental showdowns v Celtic, Man U and Milan, prompting subsequent Champions Cup winners to refuse to take part for several years in the 70s.

Apparently it kicked off in the tunnel after the game.

I didn`t know it went back as for as the 70s!

Must`ve been really bad as you could get away with much much more back then.

They always see themselves as the underdog for some reason...

Atletico have launched an anniversary strip and believe it or not the game against celtic is mentioned as a key moment in there history.

Clearly Atletico don`t care what others think of their reputation.

Diego Simeone is of course an Argentinian with over 100 caps for the national team, and has managed Racing Club, Estudiantes and River Plate so he is well versed in the intensity (aka dirty tricks) of Argentinian football.

As for Atletico, I have good memories of a tour of their old stadium in 2014, followed by the experience of watching their Champions League final against Real in the company of Atleti fans. As a club they identify with the poorer, working-class fans of Madrid as opposed to the wealthier fans of Real, but in reality the differences are not so great. However it does play to the idea that they are the permanent underdogs, and that would have affected their attitude towards super-rich Manchester City.

Atletico finished the game at Parkhead with 8 men, at the end of the night only two had not been booked.

Former Pars favourite played for Celtic that night.

Their underdog mindset comes from having lived under the shadow of their more illustrious city rivals for decades, and the fact that have never managed to win a European Cup/Champions League.

The commentator mentions on that video VEE that there were 53 free kicks in 90 minutes. It seemed like every time a Celtic player moved forward with the ball he was brought down. Surely after last night`s display Atletico should suffer a hefty fine or even a ban. The intimidation of the referee by the guy who was sent off was way out of order and should be dealt with severely. They are also the world experts at feigning injury but when the situation was in reverse with Foden rolling about in mock agony, one guy took matters into his own hands and made a grab for him.

Interesting story re the 1974 match that one of Glasgow`s finest held on to one of the Atletico players and invited Dixie Deans and another Celtic player (Davie Hay?) to have a go at him!

Football matches and teams influence people, I remember being entranced at Hampden watching RM in 1960 and that was my “team”, similarly I watched Celtic v Ath Madrid and was disgusted with them and as a consequence have no time for them whatsoever.

Thankfully the 1974 European Cup Final did not have a happy ending for Atletico.

In the last minute of extra time Bayern equalised from 0-1 down.

That must have hurt - as did the 3-0 loss in the replay !!!

It`s a shame how they behave at times, because for 30 mins of the second half, City couldn`t get out of their own half.
Only when it looked like they couldn`t win, did the players, encouraged by the manager, lose the plot.

The referee set the tone by not booking Felipe when going right through Foden in an aerial "challenge" early on.
This gave license to his team mates to follow suit. I can`t see the ref getting a game at that level any time soon?

If I recall correctly, in the 1974 game with Atletico, they fielded a largely reserve side, with the instruction to boot anything that moved, particularly wee Jinky. They didn`t care if these reserve players would be suspended.
In the second leg, they fielded their better players and won the match comfortably.

Similar to the 2014 final that I watched - Atleti led 1-0 until Ramos equalised in the 93rd minute, and Real went on to win 4-1 in extra time!

Thanks for the early chance to equalise, VEE. Atletico actually lost the replay 4-0. AFAIK, it`s the only final to have needed a replay. I remember being delighted they lost after their horror show at Parkhead. That`s twice they`ve come within a minute of winning the EC/CL. There was also the first derby v Real a few seasons back.

Athletic Bilbao are clearly better since they spell "Athletic" in the superior way.

Yes that was their original name, in tribute to some Englishmen who introduced football to the city. Under Franco, they were obliged to use the Spanish version, but changed back when he went down to the Big Fire below. 🙂
