 Ayr United Match Thread
Topic Originator: Rusty Shackleford

Forum is very quiet considering such a huge game tomorrow.

Personally I`m really excited, first time at East End in a while for various reasons so will be nice (with the greatest respect) to not be tuning in on Pars TV. From the website it looks like ticket sales are brisk if not spectacular. North Stand looks certain to sell out though which should mean a great atmosphere.

Love games like this where there`s so much at stake that there`s an edge to things from before kick off. My prediction is a tense but enjoyable win...3-1 Pars.

sorry, my mistake, I misread the BBC table.
after the Inverness win there is a 4 point gap at top with Arbroath a game in hand

Forgot it was on!! At least Arbroath will be highly motivated to beat Queens now. If I can make it in time to pop into legends I will!

Ok back on topic. Has the feel of an end of season big game situation tomorrow, just a shame it’s at the wrong end of the table. Looking forward to the next couple of games to hopefully salvage a small win from this season (staying up), but overall, I can’t wait to see the end of this campaign as it’s been a s**t show, and we can build for next year and go again

Hoping for a win obviously. We will need a similar performance as the last two home games.

Oh and we need to close down Kerr McInroy when he gets within 25 yards……..we have concede a few goals from outside the box recently……..

Don`t, for any sake, let the bride and groom hear you say that da no 1. But I must say I am glad that I don`t have a wedding or any other distraction tomorrow. After suffering with a goodly number of Dunfermline fans at Rugby Park last week, I`m looking forward to a home win tomorrow.

Strangely enough, I am not nervous at all.

I had largely accepted our fate as it has been a dire season and thought we were done for, but excited that the business end of the season is providing us an escape route that I didn’t think we would get.

First trip down the road this year! Really looking forward to it. Got a bit of visiting to do before the game, so I will be setting off soon on my wee three hour drive.
I am also getting the day off work so I can attend the Queens game. Going to cost a small fortune in diesel mind you...
Feeling cautiously optimistic. I think we`ll have enough to do the job. The Partick game could go either way but the Queens game should see us over the line.
Last three prediction is: win-draw-win. Fingers crossed of course!

Always a Par

Well having slept on it I`m obviously not really "gutted" that I`m going to all all day family wedding. I`ll be kept fully up-to-date between 3 & 5 and I`m sure it`ll be a really good day. Just hope I`ve got something extra to celebrate come 5pm.

I am gutted that I`m going to miss this game, unfortunately I seem to be suffering from bronchitis. I got some antibiotics but there not making much difference. The one good thing is that I missed the Ayr 3-0 game, I watched it from my balcony on the good ship Iona. Hopefully we will get a similar result today.

Very fortunate not to be behind here, a glorious clearance off the line from an Ayr corner and the Ayr striker making an absolute mess of a glorious opportunity to put Ayr ahead.

Ayr are pressing us high and we`ve actually had some joy going over the top early. Need to utilise O`Hara channel running.

Absolutely brutal. Arguably the worst first half of football I`ve seen from us and we are very very lucky to be only 1-0 down. Aimless hoofs up the park, no creativity and the defence has been awful. Ayr`s no 9 has ripped our full defence to shreds. Half time was the best thing to happen to us and I can hope a different team shows up in the second half. Bringing McCann is a good call.

Noticed Hughes was sitting in the dugout 10 mins before kick off, must have thought the players didn`t need any more motivation from him. That`s backfired.

Massive improvement needed. Can`t see us getting 2 unfortunately. Bring on Queens Park.

It`s difficult to put into words just how bad we`ve been.

The passing in itself is usually late, or to the wrong man, however if it is passed it gives the receiving man no chance.

Just everything, and I mean everything is bad.

Got out of jail there. Should have been buried by halftime. Second half was better but lots of players having poor games. Never gave up though. What a difference when we bin the one up front nonsense and actually play some forwards who at least provide a bit of presence. Also, Reece Cole is a decent football player whom we have largely underused. Todorov also, a proven goalscorer in this league has not been utilised properly.

Finally got a break. Hope we can continue it next week.

80 minutes of utter guff football side to side then backwards. Then 2 brilliant strikes a few minutes apart in the last 10 minutes and the place was bedlam. In the 1st half only the keeper again had a good game two great saves to keep the score down. As others have said we could easily have been 3 down at half time, the players looked the occasion got to them and they froze. It was as bad as any of Peter Grants sides served up and I was sitting at half time thinking if they can`t handle the pressure it doesn`t look good for the playoffs. Donaldson didn`t look fit, in the warm up he disappeared up the tunnel then had his own warm on the main stand side. That might be the reason for his poor performance. Fair play to Yogi his substitutes made the difference today, though I would say kamwa doesnt look comfortable on the left hand side. McCann put in more effort in the 1st 10 minutes of the 2nd half than any outfield player did in the 45 minutes. Got out of jail today but its the pars we don`t do it any other way. On a side note how good an atmosphere do we can create when all 3 stands got involved, it`s not something we see to often

Massive massive MASSIVE result today! That put me through the ringer - don`t think I`ve ever felt so emotional at a Pars game! We were awful until the last 10 minutes today but we showed a never say die attitude. Just gonna say, I called it on two occasions! Said to my cousin that Rangers dominated Braga on Thursday and still lost a late goal out of nothing, then I said Reece Cole is an excellent set piece taker before his finish! After that goal it gave us so much belief and Todorov showed a lot of bravery and composure to strike that ball when he had players at either side of him. Massive credit to Hughes, his subs worked. I couldn`t believe Thomas was subbed instead of Lawless but it worked an absolute treat!

Adeloye was an absolute handful all game but his finishing let him down. We surely must start Cole ahead of Chalmers next week - he deserves a start. Big Todorov looked a man possessed when he came on too.

So so happy with that result. I just pray we don`t blow it after all that!

First half we were hopeless, Donaldson and Polworth sticking out like sore thumbs in a sea of bad performances. We just weren`t winning the individual battles on the pitch, and the way Ayr got through the attempted tackles before adeloye shot wide of the first half summed it all up. Physically poor, seems scared and lacked any sense of ruthlessness. Think O`Hara seen this and felt this hence his yellow card when he was late with his challenge.

Adeloye then had another great chance at start of second half, and then McCann and the change of shape I think managed to at least contain him and Ayrs attacking threat. Having said that, I didn`t see us scoring at any stage and we were still slow and making all the wrong decisions going forward.

Cole and Todorov came on, both scored great goals out of nothing. I said prior to Cole taking the free kick, this is as good as it will get today. Well at that stage I was right, even after that though I could see we were certainly looking more confident, I still didn`t really think we would score again.hence why I`m saying out of nothing.

So we did it, somehow, and with it being the impact of the subs gotta give them and yogi a shout out. He got the big calls right. Still gotta be careful though. Don`t wanna start that bad again and give partick a lead next week

Coyp!

I said during the first half that I thought Donaldson was struggling with a groin injury. Turns out he was and that was the reason he was off at half time.
I’d say he’s done for the season now unless we are in the play offs.

Ayr were the better side for the bulk of the match and should have been at least two ahead at half time. Adeloye with a sitter that Jakub kept out.

Much like Arbroath, we struggle against two banks of four to penetrate.
O’Conner stopped Edwards getting forward and that largely put paid to the service for Thomas.
We couldn’t gain any real possession in midfield and that meant McCann was starved and Todd, a virtual spectator.
Adeloye and Ashford occupied our centre backs and thank goodness, Adeloye was a little ring rusty after an injury lay off

Going two up and then three up was the right thing to do. We had no choice but to gamble. We got lucky with the winner and possibly the free kick as on both occasions , you’d expect the keeper to save those.

Happy to type that we played poorly and won. Not sure I’ve been able to say that this season ?

Finally, ironic that the much maligned Peter Grant’s much maligned signings, scored the two goals that could yet keep us up.

I’ll enjoy my tea tonight

Absolute pi$h for most of the game!

Fortunate that Adeloye didnt realise you are allowed to pass the ball or we would have been more than 1 behind at HT. Slow to move the ball forward with little craft or invention on the ball we were easily picked off. Ayr dominated the game throughout.

Lucky, lucky, lucky - We can’t play like that again!

Magic, about time we got some luck, plenty games we have played teams off the park and lost.

Goalie was excellent, we never gave up, and now we have a decent chance of staying up without playoffs- let`s see, one game at a time and all that.

Feel much better tonight.

That`s the first league game we`ve won this season that we haven`t deserved to but we`ve lost a few we didn`t deserve to, so I`ll take it. It`s also the first time this season where our cumulative points have averaged more than one a game. We can`t afford another performance like the second half at Killie and the first half today though.

Delighted with the final score given how awful we played for most of it.
Ayr will feel hard done by as they out muscled us all over the park but we showed spirit when it mattered most.
The scenes when Toddy scored were fantastic in the NW stand.
Yogi shouldn`t sugar coat the performance though going into the Partick game.
We can`t just play a passing game hoping the other team don`t show up.

A terrible first half.
Will no doubt be proved wrong on the highlights but felt the penalty was soft but we deserved to be behind.
Big call to go to a back 3 but have to credit Hughes for the big calls he made.
McCann put in a tough shift against two big lads at the back and what a vital win they could be because if Queens win their game in hand Ayr could be twitchy.
Great scenes at the end!

What a bizzare game, it looked like we just hadn`t turned up for 80 minutes. Donaldson was clearly carrying a knock, nobody on the team was able to take control of the game. Chalmers was utterly atrocious, nothing was working for the attacking four players.

McCann coming on gave us maybe a little lift but not enough to change the game, but when Cole, Kamwa and Todorov came on we just became more direct and Ayr couldn`t organise themselves since we got it forward quicker. It seemed for both goals we benefitted from good bounces just before it got to McAdams but so glad we`ve somehow managed to come away with a win.

Credit to Hughes for changing the game with subs and they really reversed the momentum in our favour. Interesting to see what team Hughes puts out for Partick Thistle, a couple guys certainly put their name in contention against a few no shows that started the game

Yogi is getting a lot of credit on here for his substitutions but this has to be tempered with the fact that he was forced to change with the injury to Donaldson. However, he did choose to change formation so kudos for that because it was clear from the first half it just wasn`t working. I would much rather watch us having a go with a couple of strikers than watching the two passes forward, three backwards stuff we endured in the first half, and in fact most of the season.

Next week at Partick will be difficult. A rotten pitch and possibly no Donaldson to combat Brian Graham. We will need to play a lot better than today though.

In the hundreds of games I`ve been at, I must have seen us win after playing worse than that but I`m struggling to think of one. No idea at all how we managed to win that, but so glad we did. Imagine being an Ayr fan tonight - you`d surely be absolutely raging.

First half was really just the same as last week. Badly set up, trying to play out when it wasn`t on, then having nothing at all to go to once they closed off that option. Play out and give it away near our own box, or hoof it long with nobody to win it. It was almost unspeakably bad, from both the manager and the players.

Second half wasn`t as terrible - partly because we weren`t quite as poor, partly because Ayr started to sit on their lead. Really though, it still looked like being a comfortable away win and nobody would have been at all surprised if we`d lost 2-0.

And then it turned, gloriously. Looked a good free kick to me, but thought the keeper should have saved the second one after getting down to it. And after going ahead, we saw the game out about as comfortably as we could ever have done. We genuinely played well in those last 10 minutes after getting a lead, and never really looked like giving it up.

Unusual shape in the second half. Looked like we started it with 3 at the back but with Pybus in a deep midfield position often going back to be an extra central defender, so sort of 3.5 at the back. Then after one of the changes later on, he just went back to play a more normal centre half position and did OK there. Donaldson had an absolute nightmare in the first half, but if he was playing with an injury then that goes some way to explain it.

Well done to our keeper today. He was brilliant last week but it counted for nothing. Today, those two big saves in the first half allowed us to stay in the game and ultimately were massive in getting us the win.

The physical presence of McCann made a big difference and it was because of that we got the crucial free kick. I would like to see their penalty again because I thought it was very soft and their man threw himself down. In the second half before we scored, they were all throwing themselves down. Poetic justice that we won.

The ref seemed very lenient to me, rarely penalising defenders for winning headers by going over the top of opponents. According to the BBC he only awarded 6 free kicks to each side which is incredibly low.

Still buzzing, I`m maybe exaggerating but it`s easily one of my favourite Pars moments in years and years. Honking for so, so long and turns to sheer elation in the last few minutes when the Nikolay Todorov son of Godorov goal goes in. We might never win a cup in my lifetime but I follow football for moments like that to come around. How do you even describe that to people who don`t follow football?

Really pleased that Cole and Todorov got the goals - In my opinion Cole in particular has been criminally underused this season (how Chalmers plays ahead of him is beyond me) but both appear to have kept their heads up and seem popular with the other players.

It would be interesting to know what was said in the dressing room at half time - Breen was called in immediately at the start of half time so presumably the initial idea was a straight swap for Donaldson.

Overall performance was very poor but it was a great 3 points and the atmosphere after the equaliser was amazing - great to see Thomas, Chalmers and O’Hara all on their feet cheering on their team mates for the last few minutes as well.

Why should he have expected a different type of game against Ayr than against Partick or Raith? They`ve only taken 3 points from their last 5 games. It`s the usual story on here with fans being wise after the event. If the manager does make changes that work out then he should have made them earlier. Management`s a doddle from the stand or an armchair. Fans never see players in training but by some miracle know when they should be back in the team.

I said to my mate before the game today, I’ll take any kind of win, don’t care about how we get it. It seems to be a surprise to some on this thread that we are a poor team. We’re down at the foot of the league for a reason. At this stage, who cares how bad we are, it’s simply about survival now, and I’m over the moon that we managed to steal 3 points today! Take it, hopefully get to the end of the season still in this league, then build again for next year. This is a result to be thankful for, although you’d never know that reading some of the drivel from posters who think we should be better than we are in reality.

The games against Partick and Raith I thought Chalmers was excellent. As for the starting 11 it wasn`t a surprise that Hughes picked the same guys. Next week I`d imagine a change of formation coz that team`s no really worked away from home.

Desperado and others. You have to credit Lee Bullen for setting out his team superbly well to blunt our game. Two tight banks of four when out of possession made it difficult for us to play through.
O’Connor was excellent on the right side of midfield and never allowed Edwards to get forward to combine with Thomas.
Ashdord and Adeloye were always a threat and ensured that we couldn’t get out easily when we had the ball.
They reminded me very much of How Arbroath play and we know how effective they were against us

Given the performances after the two recent home wins I was worried that the victories flattered us. Partick had shipped four at home just a few days before and were missing key players then Raith looked jaded after their cup final win.
The first 75 minutes today suggested so, clueless and toothless it was a pathetic display, the fans had turned up( a cracking crowd today) but the team hadn`t(Donaldson obviously struggling early on, Polworth and Chalmers utter dross).

When "Boaby" came on he offered us much needed width, he maybe didn`t change the game but definitely gave us a threat and stretched the Ayr backline that we hadn`t done at all in the 1st half. We became more direct with Cole too.

Obviously delighted that we stole the win but mindful that we are still right in the sheet. Hughes must ditch the patient build up approach, it is so blunt, it needs runners from midfield, someone to get in behind that evidently we don`t have the players for. There`s no doubt that some of these players are in their final weeks here but Todorov and Cole who have rarely featured came on and looked hungry.

Wouldn`t it be good if the club could organise a couple of buses and get us a big backing next week where it is so obviously needed.

We need to stop this slow build up stuff.Ayr,we`re at our heels, right from the start, that`s how we should have started. You should never allow, a team to dictate pace or you are always on the back heal.We only got wise 10 minutes from time.We have to start on a higher tempo, their number 6 was superb, sign him now.😀

Totally agree with this. Was also impressed with Adeloy in the first half. Decent turn of pace and good feet.
We had a few that weren`t as good as normal but a mention for Ambrose who was steadier than of late.
The manager decided to go for it with his substitutions. It was a no lose situation as we were losing and were never going to finish below QOS. We were rewarded with a grandstand finish and 2 cracking goals. It was a lovely atmosphere to share with my 10 year old daughter.

There have been several games when we`ve been unlucky not to take the 3 pts this season, so let`s not feel embarrassed that we enjoyed a bit of good fortune yesterday. Ayr should have had the game sewn up by half-time but they didn`t. As long as there was only one goal in it, we had a chance and we took it.

I agree with a previous poster regarding Chalmers , fail to see what he brings to the team with his totally negative style , constantly square passing or backpassing no forward momentum at all , playing one up front requires midfielders to push up in support unfortunately our midfield didn,t have that capability until Cole came on , hopefully he starts next week.COYP

The irony was that the ref hardly added any time for the delays which worked against them once they fell behind. He only added 3 minutes which just about covered the substitutions but I was expecting at least 5.

The irony was that the ref hardly added any time for the delays which worked against them once they fell behind. He only added 3 minutes which just about covered the substitutions but I was expecting at least 5.

That was one of the few good things the ref did. He missed so many fouls which were clearly visible from the rear of the stands, never mind 10-20 yards away.

The guidance to refs is to add 30 secs per sub.
