 Yogi’s Tactical ineptitude.
Topic Originator: desparado
Date:   Sat 16 Apr 20:32

Well we got out of jail today but it was nothing to do with our managers tactical genius.

In must win game against a team who had two, some times three up front ….we had O’Hara.

A dismal first 45 , we were completely out fought out thought and tactically, we were inept.

Col Donaldson obviously had something wrong with him. It was obvious to me early on. Maybe he was ill, carrying a knock, I am not sure. He probably should not have started and I was not surprised in the slightest when he did not come out for the second half……it was not tactical. It was enforced.

Against Patrick and Raith, who only had one up front, our full backs got forward with good effect and we played really well ( bearing in mind it was against the two worst teams in the league based on current form ) .

But today? OMG. One up front against a team who were going for it and should have been out of sight at half time….tactical ineptitude from Yogi today. Our full backs were not getting forward because of the way Ayr were set up.

However, If that game had gone on another five minutes we would probably have scored a third, a third that we badly needed.

Ayr trying to defend what they had and us throwing caution to the wind in the final third of the match allowed us to snatch it.

Next week we simply cannot play with the same team and same formation as today…it was pitiful

And yes I am going to have another dig at Joe Chalmers.

Please start Cole next week. At least he knows what a forward pass is.

We need players that play on the front foot, not players who are happy to “ keep possession” with their sideways and backwards passing when we are desperately trying to win a game.

I saw Donaldson feel for his hamstring abt midway through the 1st half , and thought he would be off before half time .
Read somewhere else that he had a groin strain .
Either way , he must be a big doubt for the remaining games .

He looked ill to me. Like he had a head knock or something. Hope he is ok because he has been immense for us. Was terrible today but he was obviously toiling from the very start.

Got to admit, I`ve never been a fan of Chalmers. I thought he`d be more creative but he makes far too many negative passes when he could easily play the ball forward. I would definitely start Cole next week instead of him but I fear he`ll just start the same line up as today. I really hope Donaldson is back next week. As much as he was poor today he has been our best defender all season.

I can understand why he stated the same team as we`ve blown away Raith and Partick in our last two home games. I still think we would look much more threatening with two upfront. It`s difficult to decide which of the three I`d start with though. Todorov, O`Hara and McCann all bring different qualities to the team.

I wonder whether Aaron Comrie is carrying an injury. For me he would be the preferred right back.

So he made 3 subs, and 2 scored...

Well, using that reasoning, why did he not start with them then ?

We got lucky bud. Every single Pars fan I spoke to at the game and in the pub said the same.

Not one praised Yogi for his subs and tactical nous.

He was desperate …..and we got out of jail.

The whole point of subs is that they are a reaction to how the game is playing out. Just because they work out doesn`t mean they should have started. Subs are always a gamble but sometimes they pay off.

Every week teams win games they don`t deserve to based on possession, chances, shots etc. Until today we`d lost that knack. Some fans` can`t handle it obviously.

Yes, we got lucky today. But subs are there to come on and impact the game. McCann won the free kick for the first goal and drew the defender before he set up Todorov for the second. Cole and Todorov scored.
Of our four subs, Kamwa was the only one who didn’t contribute. Yogi deserves credit for that - and I’ve been critical of his lack of subs/hesitancy to change things in the past.

After the last 2 home games, you can’t really blame the manager for that starting 11. The formation in the second half was certainly unorthodox, but we got the result and that’s what matters. The subs made a difference and it was the manager that made those changes.

A little unfair on Kamwa. Thought the lad looked quite lively.

One last observation from the game today.

When they had a player down in the center circle well into the second half … before we had scored. Not one of our players were receiving instructions from the bench.

The game was stopped for probably a minute or more.

I would be expecting to see our manager giving instructions to players in what was becoming a desperate situation.

I did see him swinging wildly in frustration at a loose pass made by one if our players that came to him at the dug out…he missed it, much to the amusement if the Ayr fans. Made a fool of himself there.

I choose to savour the experience of winning from nowhere and the wonderful few minutes of the crowd going wild.

Managers will come and go and what will be will be. Don`t have the energy to fixate and dissect over the negative. Each to their own though.

If Yogi was a tactical genius or a genius in general would he be at the Pars??

Give the man a break, he has improved a dire situation and when plan A was not working yesterday ( we were rank) he threw the game plan out the window, gambled and won.

Kudos to him for that as we have all sat and moaned and would have sat and moaned yesterday if he did not do what he done yesterday. The man cannot win with some fans.

Personally my only alteration to what he done would have to sub Lawless instead of Thomas but he will have reasons as to why he chose Thomas instead.

I would also have brought Martin in at half time for the back 3 and subbed Todd, but we kept a clean sheet 2nd half.

Pretty difficult to bring Martin on at half time as he wasn`t even on the bench.

Manager puts out team and setup.

Team doesn’t play well and goes 1 down.

Manager changes it with subs and a new formation.

Team wins 2-1.

Used the same team and system that has worked well the last few home games which makes sense.

Made subs who won the game.

No real issue.

C'mon Ye Pars!

Being a self centred delicate flower I`m always happy if the manager plays the team I would`ve played, and he played the exact same starting eleven as I would`ve played. Sometimes it just doesn`t work.

If we had played a 442 today and had that first half performance we would`ve had people questioning why we had moved from a system that worked so well against Morton, Partick and Raith at home, it happens.

I don`t agree with all the subs, I certainly wouldn`t have kept Lawless on instead of Dom, but we won 2-1 so quite frankly I`m loathe to care.

Onto next week where Yogi does have some real dilemmas, the pitch, and the performance of the subs will give big questions for the team selection.

Yes, but when we lose after dominating it`s because the other team got their tactics right and we were clueless. When we win after being dominated it`s because the other team got their tactics wrong and were unfortunate.

..or the opposition got their tactics right and were unfortunate. If they missed numerous chances we were lucky; if we missed numerous chances we were useless. Also, every team we play has a manager who is more tactically aware than ours. This isn`t confined to Yogi; AJ and SC were similarly deficient.

Get what the OP is saying, but his changes won us the game. McCann got an assist and was causing them lots of problems, plus Cole and Todorov scored.

It was pretty poor up until 80th minute. I think our players totally played the occasion though and not the game. You could see there was a nervousness about them. But at the end of the day, we’re the ones taking away 3 points, so we should be going in to the Partick game with our heads held high and play for the win. It won’t be easy, given their pitch is, in essence, a potato field, so it makes the game a bit of a lottery.

That`s 4 huge home games in the last month or so and we`ve gained 10 points from 12. Do not underestimate how hard it must be to raise your game and performance levels under that kind of pressure when it really does matter.

I worry about next week tho. Can`t see Queens taking anything from Ayr so we could be back where we were come 5pm next Saturday

Apparently QOS played quite well at Arbroath and missed a few chances. Even Dick admitted 5-1 flattered Arbroath. QOS have lost their last 6 league games but have two home fixtures coming up in ICT and Ayr before they play us. They might still be tricky opponents.

Whilst I agree tactics are important, what I believe is more important is the morale and resilience in the squad. All of the teams are a similar level ands its confidence and resilience that will make the difference on the final run in.

Why do some fans keep focusing on the most negative outcome when football, we are told and also know by experience, is a funny old game. There seems to be a strange perversity in some, to always envisage the worst case scenario. Cheer up guys, it might never happen.

That`s a bold prediction, DBA. Do you make a lot of money by betting on the outcome of football matches? The odds for predicting the correct scores are normally very good.

Paralex and GG Riva nail it. How many times have we been told on here that we are doomed to relegation? Well, it`s going to the wire. I`ve always been hopeless at predicting the results of individual matches and when people predict scores I just smile. One of the main attractions of football has always been its unpredictability.

Aye. We were *definitely* relegated as little as a month ago by some. Am learning to try and just enjoy it more the older I get. You simply couldn`t have seen those last ten minutes happening on Saturday.
