I wouldn’t get too excited. You can see since it’s inception in the EPL that fans still think other teams are favoured. LiVARpool, VARchetser city/Utd, VARsenal etc are used regularly by fans when they feel they have been cheated.

I`m curious as to where you read that, RMG. There`s nothing on the BBC website. It would have been ironic if clubs in Leagues 1 and 2 had voted against it since they`re extremely unlikely to ever be involved in the Premiership.

I heard the same on the radio this morning. 1 club voted against it. Didn`t mention who tho.

I wouldn`t bet on it, Raymie. New Rangers have been awarded an extraordinary number of penalties in recent seasons, as well as their pre 2012 ancestors. It doesn`t matter how soft each award is, the BBC pundits always find a way to justify it, with phrases like "There was contact", "He felt a push" and "He gave the ref a decision to make."
You never hear "He was looking for it" or "He was on his way down before the tackle was made" even when it`s fairly obvious that that`s what`s happened.

While they do get their fair share the amount they get may actually surprise you. This season for instance they have had 7 which is the same as Celtic but one less than Hearts who have 8 and 2 less than Ross County who have had 9.

Something like 98% of penalties given are correct awards. Every chance pen takers will be more than delighted with more awards that refs miss. Aberdeen also had 8 this season.

So last 3 seasons, Rangers and Celtic both been awarded 19 penalties each........

BBC News - VAR to be introduced in Scottish Premiership from December after SPFL clubs vote in favour
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/60987568
How will it work?
The SFA system will be a mirror image of that already used in competitions run by world governing body Fifa, with the principle of "minimum interference, maximum benefit."
All video assistant referees will be current or recently retired Category 1 officials, with the help of a minimum of six manned cameras in each game.
The question the VAR will ask is not "has the right decision been reached?" but "has the referee or his assistant made an obvious error?" and/or "has the referee missed a serious incident?".
VAR can intervene in seven areas:
For penalty box decisions/penalty kick or possible penalty kick offences.
For goals scored - all goals scored, and the build up to the goal being scored, are checked under VAR.
For straight red card offences, such as violent conduct and the denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity.
For serious misapplications of the laws - such as a goal scored direct from a dropped ball or throw in.
For cases of mistaken identity.
At the taking of a penalty kick and at kicks from the penalty mark (e.g., for encroachment or goalkeeper moving from the goalline.)
For serious, missed incidents in matches.
VAR will not intervene to ensure a player is booked for what may be seen as a reckless tackle, for faulty restarts of play, or to award a foul and a free-kick.

Surely every other team will be rubbing their hands. It`s bound to increase their penalty count as well?

I believe it is being funded by all clubs in Scotland on a sliding scale depending what league they are in. Plus anything that can be raised through sponsorship.
So the lower keague clubs had a massive incentive to vote against since as you say they are unlikely to ever be involved in premiership but are having to fund it.

Only the Premiership are funding it and it`s on a sliding scale with the Champions playing most and the 11th and 12th clubs playing least.

That`s definitely not what they were saying on Radio Scotland yesterday.
Seems they got it wrong. I should have known better than trust the BBC to get anything right.

It was around 1245 yesterday they were talking about it. He definitely said sliding scale through the leagues, probably just mistake and meant league. Then they mentioned smaller clubs maybe not being able to afford wages of one player because of it.

The champions will pay £195k and the bottom two clubs £67k each. The total cost is £1.2m per season.

Assuming the people checking the replays are in a central studio somewhere (not in the back of a van outside the ground), I wonder how long it will be before the OF are asking for more impartial English VAR refs to check their decisions?

Do the fans at Premiership grounds in England see the pictures the VAR officials are basing their decisions on?

They were contradicting themselves as recently as Saturday afternoon, eck. The BBC website said if Ayr and the Pars end the season with identical records and QOS are relegated, there would be a play off to decide who was in the play offs.
Meanwhile, Richard Gordon was announcing on RS that the Pars would finish above Ayr, thanks to their better H2H record. He was correct, of course. 🙂

Do they not appear on the big screens inside the stadia, eck? The marginal offside calls are a bit iffy, tbh. It all depends on exactly when the VAR freezes the action. A few frames either way could easily see some calls reversed.

I was just wondering what the reaction will be in Scottish grounds if the fans see the replays and don`t agree with the VAR`s call.

No, the only information fans get in the grounds is a message saying "VAR check in progress", they don`t get to see what the VAR is looking at or what the ref sees when they look on the pitch side monitor. That, and the long delays you sometimes have - there was a FIVE MINUTE delay recently when Arsenal had a goal disallowed for offside - are the main gripes people who actually go to games have. VAR is rubbish if you`re at a game, but the TV companies lap it up.

Much the same as they’ve always done for decades I reckon.
A bunch around us were not at all pleased with the penalty award on Saturday - the highlights confirmed that the referee called it correctly.
Impossible to keep everybody happy.
