 Possible surprise.
Topic Originator: PARrot

If QoS are relegated before playing Ayr they will be done with high pressure and with nothing to lose they could be well up for a battle in their derby. I can see them get at least a point.
Same against us of course but they might not be so up for it away from home.
They wont want to lose their last home game.

Ayr haven’t won at Palmerston for 20 years. That’s an incredible stat, let’s hope that it’s not broken on Saturday.

If it wasn’t for the numerous lows, the highs wouldn’t be as high or mean as much!

It must be rubbish being an OF glory hunter - if you don’t win every game three nil then you’re disappointed (and if you do it’s just what you expected anyway)

You know what made it all the sweeter on Saturday was hearing the Ayr fans celebrating thinking they were safe then bang up steps Reece Cole and big niko todorov with the girfuy

If QOS are relegated before playing ayr I imagine their out of contract players who are hoping to remain in the championship won’t fancy any 50-50’s.

I fancy ayr to win that game given queens form has been terrible.

Things will be looking up……..now yogi is gone!

And wouldn`t QOS players want to impress potential employers? They won`t do that by shirking any challenges.

There`s never much in these debates really. So many other variables.

For example, an already defeated team might play defensively and get a flukey goal. Alternatively, they`re up for it and really go for it but leave themselves exposed and lose 5-1.

I think the only time there`s a real impact is where you have a team that`s consistently winning or consistently losing as that impacts significantly on confidence.

Apparently QOS would have thrown in the towel if they had lost tonight and gifted Ayr 3 points on Saturday. Now they have something to play for. That`s the logic anyway but as Rusty says what will be will be. We still have to look after ourselves.

As for wanting QOS to win tonight, if we can`t earn one point in our last two games, we don`t deserve to stay in this league.

The QOS win tonight definitely makes things interesting. As Wee Eck mentioned, ICT will want to win at Morton on Saturday now to clinch third place so they can rest players for the final fixture. An ICT win may put Morton in a tough place.

Ayr are now going to be hoping for a point at Palmerston rather than three. Hopefully the Pars can come up with a good away performance at Firhill.

And then there`s the 1v2 showdown as well. Great league.

QoTSA having something to play for against Ayr, might mean they beat Ayr by a couple of goals, and if we get beat then it`s squeaky bum time the following week.
Still, it in our own hands. I think we can pick up at least a point at Firhill then, I reckon we can beat the Doonhamers on our own patch the following week. Nerves permitting

I’m with flyboy on this. Get Queens down and fight with Ayr for the play off spot. I don’t understand why you would not have wanted them relegated tonight. They beat Ayr on Saturday and we lose. Why would you want to go into the last game of the season with them and we could still be automatically relegated. Absolutely bonkers mind set.

Saturday is massive - Queen’s will now go into the last 2 matches knowing they are favourites for 8th if they win their last 2 matches against the teams immediately above them. If Ayr and Dunfermline both lose both by 1 goal then all 3 goal differences will be identical, lose by more than 1 and Queen of the South’s will be best.

Some league.

All the above arguments are valid, but some are more valid than others. 😉

I was one of those who wanted QOS to win last night, so they would be up for their game v Ayr on Saturday. I can now see that ending in a draw, which would give us an advantage over both clubs, provided we get at least a point at Firhill.

Whatever happens, our destiny is in our own hands. We "just" have to match Ayr`s last two results. Forget about looking over our shoulders and take care of our own games. A win v Thistle would go a long way to easing the nerves. QOS will be just as nervous if they`re still in the mix when they come to EEP.

For those who think an already relegated team means an easy 3 pts, I refer you to our last game of the season v Airdrie in the Championship, in our Admin season. Already down, the Pars needed a point to secure 8th place, IIRC. We should have been 3 or 4 up by halftime, but the talented lad who was playing up front for us (Ryan ?) missed a hat trick of sitters and we contrived to lose 2-1. The play offs saw us lose our Championship status to Alloa, I think.

The result is what the result is…

If it means QoS are still fighting for their survival when they play Ayr then let’s take that as a positive.
Let’s say they fluke a 1-0. Before we even kicked a ball against Patrick we’d be a game in hand , in 8th place with a better goal difference against both teams below us

The main thing is that we don’t **** the bed against Patrick and the other scores will play out as they will play out

Literally no-one has said we`ll breeze past Thistle. Stop making stuff up and you may be taken seriously.

Saturday will be a tough tough game but it`s better for us that Queens still have an incentive playing Ayr than them being on a total downer having just been relegated.

It`s the fact I don`t think that we`ll breeze past Thistle that makes me think last nights was a good result.

QoTS lose last night, we lose against Thistle, Ayr are now playing in there final two games a QoTS side already relegated, and a Thistle side already in the playoffs and resting players. How on earth is that good for our chances of staying up?

Even if we lose to Thistle, and QoTS win on Saturday, that means we go into the final game of the season in 8th place, with Ayr United having to better our result against QoTS to jump above us in the league.

I just can`t fathom why anyone is looking at last night and going "That`s bad for us"

Correct me if I’m wrong but what if Ayr win on Saturday (I don’t see anyone thinking that) QoS are relegated irrespective of our result, we’re guaranteed a playoff, not ideal but still in our hands. Multiple permutations here guys PT/RR/DA/AYR/QOS. Can’t worry about anybody but ourselves.

The safest option is to avoid the playoffs.
Queens being up for it v Ayr is the best prospect.
We have to think we can win at home v Queens, or why assume we would win the playoffs?

8th is the obvious target, its down to us to beat QoS at home. Yesterdays result was the best, safest outcome.

If Ayr win against QOS we are only guaranteed a play off if we lose to Partick and there is a large goal swing

Anyone visited the QOTS & Ayr forums?
They are just as upbeat about survival as the posters on here

The outcome of the next 2 games is not a given for anyone & the best performing team will avoid the threat of relegation with the worst performers guaranteed instant relegation……………our team needs to be up for not just one but 2 battles to ensure our survival in the championship

QOS is down unless they win on Saturday. If they draw, then they are down when they visit EEP. If the Pars draw at Firhill -- even if QOS wins -- QOS still can`t catch us.

The only way we can get relegated automatically is if (a) QOS wins on Saturday and (b) we lose our two last games. As I said, if we can earn a single point in our last two games, we don`t deserve to be in this league. You have to have confidence in the team.

It would be nice to take something from Firhill, though.

Another way to look at it is that Ayr are currently our biggest rivals.

Last night`s score was a terrible result for them, which means there is a decent argument that it is a good result for us.

Exactly this. Had we been playing QOS away next (instead of Ayr), I could maybe understand those who wanted them relegated last night.

Our away form is absolutely honking .
I`m really not expecting anything on Saturday.
I pray the team proves me wrong .
If as I expect QotS win on Saturday how many of you will still think that was a good result last night .
Fwiw , I spoke to a true Pars legend today who couldn`t understand why people didn`t want QotS relegated last night .

So what. Footballers generally aren’t recognised as the sharpest tools in the box.

Yep, then it proves people were correct in that the result last night was very good for us.

If we lose at Firhill, as you expect, how would you view it if Ayr beat a QoTS side with one eye already firmly on the summer?

Yes, because I back us to not lose next Friday night and it gives us the best shot of avoiding play offs.

Couldn`t care less if an ex player holds a different opinion! Fair play to him.

I don`t disagree with any of that, I just hope no one goes into these last two games thinking we just need one point.

Those of us welcoming last night`s result did so in the hope, and with some confidence, that we can finish above the play-off spot. There`s an argument that it`s a riskier strategy, ignoring the fact that last night`s game couldn`t be part of any strategy of ours, as it keeps alive the chance of automatic relegation. However it increases the chances of only having to play two games to stay up rather than six.

That said, I would have seen the positives of any other result yesterday.

I would rather be fighting one team to avoid 9th than 2 teams to avoid 10th .

There are valid arguments on both sides as to whether the QoS/ICT result was good or bad for Dunfermline.

It was certainly good for Queens as any other outcome would have relegated them. IMO it was therefore "bad" for both Pars and Ayr as both are now faced with the possibility of automatic relegation.

It was possibly slightly worse for Ayr as they are first in line for an invigorated QoS team, while Ayr are possibly still shell-shocked from their late defeat at EEP.

But should Queens beat Ayr they will come to EEP believing that they can pull off an amazing escape, while Pars will be nervous if they have lost to Partick - as will Ayr in their final match (with Partick). It could all come down to goal difference.

For me, the ideal outcome will be for Ayr and Pars to win their final two games, while Morton lose theirs ...
