 CL Semi Finals

I was going to start a thread about the Man City - Real Madrid tie last night, but never got round to it. If ever a game exceeded all the hype, this was it. I`ve never known 90 mins to pass so quickly. I was quite breathless at the end. A proper highlights programme would have to be at least an hour long to do the game justice. Both teams surged forward at every opportunity. It could easily have finished about 10-5 for City.

I know a lot of folk find the CL a turn off because of the obscene sums of money sloshing around at that level and I get that, but watching some of the best players in the game performing like they did is absolutely enthralling.

If Liverpool`s game with Villareal tonight is even half as good, it`ll be an absolute cracker.

The game was very exhilarating however I thought the commentators were suffering from a very blinkered perspective. They seemed to think Man. City were going to blow Real Madrid away without realising how susceptible their defence was looking when Real attacked. Man City really had to take their chances and squandered too many. I turned the sound off after a while because it looked like the wheels were coming off the cart and the commentators were trying to save face by making out what a brilliant game it was, while secretly crying in their beer.

I didn`t need to turn the sound down, Paralex. I watched it on an Italian channel where the commentators were quite impartial and if anything, leaned towards Real because of Carletto Ancelotti. Even so, they were unanimous that City should have had the tie in the bag by halftime and it`s difficult to argue with that assessment. City reminded me of Brazil v Italy at Spain 82. I couldnt fathom why they kept flooding forward when they had a 2 goal lead, not once but 3 times.

I think European knock out matches have improved since removing away goals. Teams appear to just have a go now.

I was 7 when my family moved to Scotland and we always spoke Italian at home, so it wasn`t difficult.

Watching Liverpool - Villareal tonight? I think the two English clubs will contest the final but I`ve been known to be wrong before.

And I was 8 when my parents moved from Fife to Glasgow so as well as speaking broad Cowdenbeath, I am fluent in Parliamo Glesca. But I have been in Italy at least 10 times without making much inroads with the language.

It seemed like Villareal decided not to turn up tonight. Surely they are much better than that. But seemingly their home record is impeccable. Not all over yet but I would fancy Liverpool to score. In that event it is possible Villareal Real could score 3 and force extra time but maybe not probable.

I think Liverpool`s task should be easier than Man City`s and wouldn`t be surprised by a Liverpool/Real Madrid final.

I saw Villareal`s 1-0 win in their home leg v Bayern in the last round and the Germans were lucky to get nil, so they can do better than they showed last night. I can`t see any way back for them, given Liverpool`s clinical approach. Klopp`s post match comment says it all. "We wanted to score a third, but we had to control the game." If only City had adopted that same mentality when they were two goals up.

It`ll be interesting to see how Pep sets City up next week. Much may depend on whether Kyle Walker is fit. Vinicius Jnr ran away from 36 year old Fernandinho to score - he won`t run away from Walker quite so easily. I also watched Real`s return leg v Chelsea in the quarters and they really rode their luck to go through. Lucky to leave the Etihad only a goal down, how much longer can their luck hold out?

Hopefully Real Madrid beat the Petrostate in the Bernebau. Not fussed either way about the other semi but think Liverpool will be too streetwise in the second leg at la Ceramica.

Be interesting to see the second leg and what players are available, fancy Real to go through as long as they have Benzema playing. Wasn`t that many weeks ago that Barcelona took them to bits at the Bernabeu, it could have been a cricket score without their aged striker.

Liverpool 2 down at half time. Totally different game from last week. Villareal dominating so far. If Liverpool don`t improve second half they`re out.

I thought Liverpool would be alright but that early goal gave Villareal a great boost.

They`ve already knocked out Bayern and Juve, so they`re a decent side who can`t be underestimated. Klopp will have to earn his corn tonight if Liverpool are to go through.

Villareal well worth their two goal lead at half time. Liverpool struggling to get out of their own half.

Complete turnaround. Liverpool took control right from the restart and looked a yard faster, winning the tie quite comfortably in the end. The Villareal keeper had a bad second half though: two shots through his legs and a rush from goal to let in Mane.

Two goals by Real in and after the 90th minute, and the tie is heading for extra time.

Man City just blew it big style. Total capitulation. They had it in the bag and just let it slip through their fingers. Feel sorry for DeBruyne and Mahrez.

Well that settles any argument about who is the better manager between Guardiola and Klopp. When the chips were down for Liverpool last night Klopp rallies his troops and they come out in the second half and turn the tide. Before extra time tonight Guardiola just couldn`t get through to his team and steady them mentally.

I didn`t say he was a dud, he`s obviously an excellent manager. The two goals in injury time can happen to even the best sides but then the 90 minutes was up and that`s when Pep had to earn his money.

Had the Pars been at home last night, I definitely would have been at EEP and missed this amazing game. As it was, the idea of travelling through to Glasgow, to watch two poor teams trying to play football on a ploughed field with the 2nd leg to come, didn`t appeal at all.

I understand - but don`t share - the animosity some of you have for clubs who have rich owners, with dodgy backgrounds. Take City, I like Guardiola`s footballing philosophy and the players he`s brought to the club. The same applies to Klopp and Liverpool. Both their teams are entertaining to watch, most weeks. To a lesser extent, I`d throw in Tuchel and Chelsea. None of this means I`m a fan of Abramovich and Co. (Man U were also good to watch under Ferguson, but I`m no fan of the Glazers.)

I thought City were a bit too cavalier last week and that they should have seen the game out when they had a 2 goal lead. That proved irrelevant when Mahrez scored last night. Much easier to defend a 2 goal lead for 20 mins, rather than 90, or so you`d think. City so nearly did it, too. TOWK, you ignore the fact that Pep took off his more creative players towards the end, meaning his team was blunted when Real levelled the tie. Ancelotti did exactly the same in ET when his team went 3-1 ahead.

There`s something about Real and comebacks. The banner unfurled before the game proudly proclaimed "Another magical night for the kings of Europe." How prophetic was that? Largely outplayed by PSG, Chelsea and now City, here they are in the final. It`s not just this season, either. They came within a minute of losing the CL final to Atletico, before running out 4-1 winners in ET. I also remember them beating Anderlecht 6-1 at the Bernabeu after losing 3-0 in Belgium. It`s significant that all these comebacks have been in their own stadium. Lazarus would be proud of them.

It`ll be a fascinating final. A one off game means no home advantage for Real, which they may miss more than Liverpool. Klopp earned his corn at half time on Tuseday evening. Will he repeat that in Paris?

Eta. I thought the Italian referee had a poor game last night, letting some poor "tackles" and time wasting go unpunished. Casemiro, in particular, was lucky to finish the match.

Aye, Pep`s a "specialist in failure" right enough. His CV is a right dull read. I think you stole that jibe from Jose Mourinho who was referring to that other footballing nonentity, Arsene Wenger. Mourinho himself has never been sacked by any club cos he`s such a brilliant manager. Oh wait.......

City are the Jazz music of football. Technically accomplished but ultimately boring and pretentious. I`d much rather watch Liverpool. They are AC/DC in comparison.
