 Play offs
Topic Originator: ParfectXI

Why are there different rules for the Premiership playoffs to every other league playoffs?

In the Premiership the 11th place team goes directly into the final and for ICT or Partick to win it they would have to play a Qtr, semi and the final a huge 6 games compared to St Johnstone’s 2.

Every other set of playoffs has every team playing In the Semis so no upper league team parachuted straight into the final.

Another case of SPL bias?

Spl bias and the fact that their league isn’t finished yet so there is scheduling conflicts.

The advantage the premiership team get is almost myth like.
Between tonight and the final Partick or Inverness would play 6 games whilst the premiership team plays 5 as they have 3 league games left.
So in reality, it is only a 1 game advantage the premiership team has.
The reason the championship teams fail is usually that they aren`t good enough.

Just the usual almost corrupt state of Scottish Football. If it hadn’t been for the sons of William being in the lower leagues we’d probably of not had any play offs continuing at all. All geared up to SPL preservation as it was originally.

St Johnstone will have played 40 games only 2 less than ICT or PT if one of them makes the final. Same as Arbroath if it`s them.

Its the fact the bottom League 2 team gets another chance to stay up when all the others are automatically relegated that I think is unfair.

I think 10th in League 2 should go down and HLvLL winner take their place. Loser in HLvLL could play 9th in League 2.

I`m with you Vasco. Bottom of league 2 should be relegated. I like the idea of the loser of the HH/LL playing 9th also.
But then that`s common sense and notuch of that in Scottish football.

Apart from the season when Hamilton won promotion over Hibs, has any other second tier gone side up in the playoffs ?

Rangers were put to the lowest tier several seasons after the playoff system was introduced in 2007.

The one time they needed playoffs to get back up the divisions to the top flight Motherwell beat them 6-1 on aggregate.

The Newgers were put into the lowest tier surly? Jumping the queue of other potential entries.

After last night`s 1-0 win for Montrose v Airdrie Utd 😉, maybe it will be Stewart Petrie who will send the Pars down and not Airdrie Utd

That was an SFA/SPFL decision in response to the rightly widespread negative reaction across supporters of the other clubs to their original intention to allow the resurrected Rangers to resume in the top tier.

Fan power in action, for once.

Let`s wait and see if we turn up tonight before making assumptions that we are going down !! I know we have been unpredictable and gash most of the season but we still have a glimmer of hope

I actually think the playoffs for the Premier are better. 3rd and 4th should have a disadvantage as they have finished lower in the league. If second plays 11th in the final they have both played an equal number of games to get there.

Im concerned the players that wont be here next year will not make the required effort.
Im not having a go at fans for criticising poor performances but regardless of entitlement, I hope we haven`t shot ourselves in the foot by constantly telling them they are no good and get rid.

No doubt ill get plenty flak for saying that but it is a concern. I think a wee bit diplomacy might have been wise until it was over.

Any professional that doesn`t give 100% for the club and more importantly for themselves in a game like this because they don`t like what some no mark has written about them on a wee website doesn`t deserve to be here and probably doesn`t deserve to be a professional footballer.
We really need to start doing proper due dillegence on the mental toughness of our recruits. That`s what the problem has been for several years. Too many snowflakes not enough swagger merchants

How do you know anyones been told they’ll not be here next year? Unless you mean those whose contract expires, but they’ll know that and it’s the same for every club every year, irrespective of their last games.

If any players do want to leave the best thing they can do is chip in with some decent performances in high pressure games if they want to increase their marketability.

Nailed it, lpf.

I also said on another thread that I believe the club may offer the squad a bonus for staying up. While some may argue - with some justification - that they don`t deserve it, after what has been a disastrous season, there`s no doubt that such a carrot will concentrate the players minds. Not suggesting they won`t be trying their best - that would be absurd, footballers hate losing - but a bonus would have them trying even harder and perhaps rescue a situation where the tie seems lost.

Not your average Sunday League player.

There wasn`t much evidence that they hated losing last Friday GG .
Looked like they just rolled over in that 2nd half .
They`ve got a bit of making up to do , let`s hope they start tonight .

To be fair, a team finishing 4th in a 10 team league should have absolutely no right contesting promotion. They’re basically mid table. It should be straight play off 2nd top v 2nd bottom, over two legs.

Anytime I reflect on the the fairness of the playoffs I’m reminded of a few seasons back when Alloa in 3rd place lost out to Brechin in 4th on penalties - the Wasps were well ahead during the regular season on points and wins, as well as goals scored etc.

Brechin had had fewer wins than losses - yet qualified for potential promotion.

They then freshened up the following Championship with 4 points - and set a new record for no wins in a whole season.

Great system indeed.

Nothing wrong with the way it was. 2 up 2 down and everyone knows exactly what they are playing for from kick off.
If you finish bottom 2 after a full season you deserve to go down if you finish top 2 you shouldnt be robbed in a lottery.

A two legged tie is hardly a lottery to be fair. Everyone knows exactly what they`re playing for currently as well so struggle to see your point.

Doing it over 4 games is a lottery compared to doing it over 36 in my book.

Previously the target was 2nd and you were up. Now you have up to 6 games more to play before you know your fate.

Come on, 4 games a lottery?

If you`re not good enough to win a league, why should you go up? If you can`t beat an opponent who finished below you over two legs, do you deserve to go up?

The playoffs invariably give the vast majority of the league something to play for until the final few games. That can only be a good thing.
