 Dunfermline Athletic Nil (again)

It`s not rocket science to identify why we were relegated.

Failure to score in 15 of 36 league games.

Had the team managed a single goal in five draws that would have brought an additional 10 points from the wins.

Likewise a goal scored in four defeats would have resulted in another 4 points.

These stats are not a precise science of course ......opponents can, and do, react to losing a goal that would turn a draw into a loss, or a win to a draw.

Then there`s the failure to score against a lower league side in the two playoffs.

The end of term report card, (aka League Tables Don`t Lie) says it all.

https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/dunfermline-athletic/fixtures-results

5 wins at home, 2 away.
8 draws at home, 6 away.
5 defeats at home, 10 away.
22 goals for at home, 14 away.
24 goals against at home, 29 away.
Overall goal difference = - 17

Posted for info.

Painful. Our midfield contributed nothing all season. Barely a goal or assist outside of Dom.

Thank god yogi saw this and brought in a whole new midfield to solve the problem…..oh wait…

Things will be looking up……..now yogi is gone!

We all know you`re a bit of a midfield expert, Berkey, but we`re still waiting on you suggesting someone within our budget who would improve that department. I noticed you singing Kyle Turner`s praises on anther thread but he can`t get a regular start in Partick Thistle`s team.

You have hit the nail on the head VEE. Barring a period earlier in the season when we leaked goals, it was the lack of goals that sank us. Yogi`s tactics and team selections played a part in that as he often left out our most creative players who were more capable at set pieces and more likely to create something or deliver balls that could unlock defences. Hughes seemed to favour possession at all costs even if meant going sideways and backwards a lot, and this allowed defences to organise against us. By way of contrast, quite a few of the goals we conceded were from quick direct counterattacks. He didn`t seem to want to take a bit more risk to increase the chances of winning (when you get three times the points compared to a draw - better win 1 lose 2 than draw 2 lose 1) , and for me, gave too much respect to the opposition. We were often too slow and ponderous in our build-up, leaving the lone striker upfront with a difficult job. Also, not enough midfielders were prepared to bomb forward into the box to get on the end of balls. All our coaches were defenders. Let`s hope that next season is different and we can get a more attack-minded coach. We at least now have a chance to rebuild.

Could the problem be that since the start of season 2016/17 we have used a total of 99 players to start league matches. We have played 199 league matches x 11 starting appearances = 2189 starting appearances. One player Ashcroft has made over 100 appearances with 129 appearances.
The rest of the appearances are
76-100 appearances = Nil players
50-75 appearances = 10 players
25-49 appearances =18 players
10-24 appearances = 40 players
9 and under appearances = 30 players
Could this be the problem to many loan players and constant changes to the starting eleven. Please feel free to check these figures

I think that`s just the reality of the modern game and where we are.

Short term contracts and loan players.

If a player does well but we don`t get promoted they move to a better team.

too much reliance on loans yes, some add real quality to the team such as Kiltie and Dom who we managed to sign permanently but others have just blocked the progress of others. This season`s being particularly bad in Ambrose and Polwarth who didn`t look interested at any point.

Arguably our two best players this season were both loan signings in Donaldson and Connolly.

Both centre backs, not even our own players and in a team that got relegated. Pretty depressing.
