 Whittaker Joins Brown
Topic Originator: RMGpar

Well now that Whittaker has joined Scott Brown, will we see a snowball effect with the rest of the backroom/management team? I would hope we would keep Shields and maybe have him involved in the academy side of things.

Yep. There was no point in sacking someone and paying compensation when we could wait a few days and let them go for nothing, or maybe even cheekily get a few quid compensation for taking a club employee.

Why? What do you know about Shields that makes him qualified and good at that role?

Consensus is the input he’s had since returning has led to our demise. If JH not good enough neither is his coaching staff

We`ve been rotten with this current set up. Every single coach has to go and we need a completely new start.

I know he was head of Carolina RailHawks` academy programme, not sure if that would be good enough for you? He was VERY highly thought off over in America

No, it wouldn’t. Try a simple google search. It’s like being in charge of Rosyth under 18s, he was that highly thought off he was there 8 years and never got near the first team set up or another club, his first interview here he said clearly the pull of mens football again was a huge draw

Not an inspiring CV.

"never got near the first team" - He was assistant manager there too...

But Okkkkkayy!

Some people need to remember where we actually are and the calibre of people we can now attract..

Hilarious.

I take it you guys have studied Greg’s coaching very closely with regular visits to the training ground etc to come to these conclusions?

There are many, many coaches who stay with clubs through both unsuccessful spells and successful spells and are very good at their job.

Just some absolute nonsense on here.

Look at Celtic, Bad season last year new manager comes in and keeps the whole backroom team the same, very different results this season.

I think the difference is, he`s been consistently here for 3 different managers, during which time we`ve had consistently poorer results than we expected. There`s also been few youth players come through we could describe as a large success. We`ve also had at least one serious player dispute each season (turner,Watson and arguably thomas) which shows a consistent lack of respect to coaches or a failure to work with different types of players.

Some coaches spend their entire careers coaching young players which probably requires a different sort of talent. Wasn`t Shields brought to the club specifically to coach the youngsters and manage the youth team? I seem to recall he had them playing good football and he also talked impressively about the game. When Covid struck his job was effectively made redundant and he became part of the first-team coaching set-up. He could now revert to his original role - in fact, I would have thought he would have been a good candidate to run the academy but that seems to have been given to someone else.

Just need Dorran`s to get appointed to Whittaker`s position on coaching staff and this place will go nuclear ;-)

Shields was brought in as Crawfords assistant initially then had remained on first team coaching ever since

Shields had the young squad punching well above their weight and playing nice football before it all got scrapped.

Sorry, didn’t we make the promotion playoffs under Crawford? What on earth were people expecting last season? To put the levels we reached under Crawford as being ‘consistent’ with what we’ve seen this season is just nonsense.

I agree with you wee eck, Sheilds had the pars youth team playing some good football even though they were generally younger than most of the teams they were up against. Then along came covid and put an end to that set up. Have to say though that I just wonder how much the coaching staff influence the way the team plays or is picked, couldn`t imagine the likes of Stein or Ferguson would be swayed by the input of the coaches in their final decision making although I`m sure they would always listen to their views.

Wee Eck kens!

Nah but Dorrans reacted to abuse from other humans this one time so automatically he wouldn’t be a good coach and needs punted. That’s how it works obviously!

Yeah, but if you`re an ex-Par with your coaching badges you should be in the door right away! Due diligence? That only applies if someone the punters don`t like is appointed!😊😊😊

Josh, are you aware that some managers do not take any advice from their assistants? They limit them to taking training sessions, but they pick the teams and decide tactics and formations, as well as substitutions and their timings.

I`m reliably informed that AJ and JJ fell into that category, but I don`t know about SC, PG or JH. I strongly suspect that JH is very much his own man, too and perhaps PG as well. In other words, I doubt the coaches are responsible for our relegation.

Dick Campbell on the podcast sums up the youth players that are coming through, he`s pretty blunt about it!

Same podcast Joe Cardle is on.

Another possibility...

Manager is given a budget for the rest of the season. He can choose how to spend it.

Want a new coach? That comes out of the budget. Want rid of a coach? The severance package comes out of your budget. So on balance, the manager decides it`s better to keep the existing coaches and spend the budget on players.

Not if they were only responsible for the training sessions and had no say in team selection, tactics etc. Not saying that`s how it was but it wouldn`t surprise me.

A baffling appointment. Another classic case of a job for the boys, seems it is his pals act with Brown that got him the job, as it certainly wasn’t his football credentials, as we all bore witness what he has brought to the table, especially this season. I wish Brown well and hope he has success in management, but if I was a Fleetwood fan, I would be worried.

Welcome to the forum Mark.

The thing is, unless you`re closely involved with the team, none of us really know what influence coaches have on decisions the manager makes.

As he wasn`t appointed by Hughes, I`d expect Whitaker`s influence to be limited. At Fleetwood, since Brown has brought him in, he`ll probably be more involved.

Your right Mark, only around 200 Rangers appearances, around 200 for Hibs, over 100 for Norwich, around 30 odd caps for Scotland, played in the champions league, uefa cup, Europa League, intertoto cup, English premiership, won numerous trophies, wore the famous black and white, but definitely no footballing credentials.......................

The flame still burns
