Cowdenbeath out of the senior leagues, sad day for Fife football as I don’t think they’ll be back

Good riddance good to see clubs who have become way too comfortable being replaced with clubs with ambition

I think they may fold altogether.

Good luck to both them and Bonnyrigg Rose

Been coming for a while, sadly can`t see how they can get back or continue long term.

Having said that, definitely a fan of pyramid system, just wish it was automatic rather than play offs

Dunfermline, East Fife and Cowdenbeath all relegated. Almost a Fife Flopper ...

Cowdenbeath fans despise Dunfermline so I can’t and won’t feel bad for them just because they are from fife. They deserve to be where they are. Just like us. Mental to think they were in the second tier not so long ago. Most of their fans will be focusing on the game in Seville next week anyway.

Plenty Cowden fans chipped in to help us in our hour of need despite the rivalry.
I got it tight in the taxi in Cowdenbeath during that period but they all wanted us to survive and made welcome contributions.

I do think the best teams should replace the weaker ones in the sennior league though so thanks for the memories but goodbye.

These well run ambitious and progressive clubs deserve the right to challenge for admission to League 2, it’s not their fault that Cowdenbeath fell into the relegation playoff position, or that Cowden were not good enough to retain their status.

A lot (?) of us will mind the old Division 2 (of 2) setup where there was no pyramid system - clubs at the lower end of the Division could play out their fixtures knowing there was no potential relegation nightmare scenario as the season drew to a close…..that went on for decades.

Maybe not a lot of us, VEE - and certainly not a huge number on this forum - but I`m one and I remember the old 19 club Second Division in the 60s, only too well. The bottom 5 clubs always formed Section 9 of the following season`s League Cup. It was almost always the same clubs. Off the top of my head, Albion Rovers, Berwick, Brechin, Forfar, Stenhousemuir and Stranraer made regular appearances in the Group of Shame.

The winners of Section 9 then played off against the Section 4 winners and were routinely scudded before the quarter finals took place.

Was at the Tranent game today, won the EOSFL, and they were absolutely superb. Some really decent players and play some great stuff. We go into a three team play off to get into the Lowland League, so hopefully be playing Cowdenbeath next season, and then who knows. Could be the next Bonnyrigg

From what I remember BigT, Tranent, unless they`ve changed over the years, are just a bunch of caber tossin` tattie howkers, but maybe there`s a touch of sour grapes in my sentiments, since they beat us 2-1. But I do wish I had done a more effective job on their centre back.

Cowdenbeath existed by spending money from away fans when big teams were in the league ,which was not sustainable, coupled with the fact the the town are more supportive of The Rangers ,then they deserve to go into obscurity

Interesting that the last two clubs to drop out of the League (Brechin and Cowdenbeath) both did so within a few years of being in the Championship. Gretna`s fall was even more dramatic, albeit for different reasons. Is it a case for the smaller clubs of being careful what you wish for?

GG,

I hadn’t remembered the League Cup section thing, well minded.

A couple or so years ago Sammer (if memory serves) flagged up the attempt by Rangers (Mk.1) back in the mid ‘60s to have the then Div.2 reduced by five clubs, Cowden being one of them - it failed thankfully.

There were 37 clubs in the two divisions with Div.2 having the odd number of 19, so one of teams would get a Saturday off in rotation.

The plan would have left two 16 team setups, with 2 automatic relegation/promotion places.

I’m not sure if Berwick were on Rangers hit list - that would be sweet irony if so !!!

Big Tpar, we`re talking about 1979 and junior football may actually have been of a higher standard then since virtually all the players then and now would be Scots and there were far more Scots playing football then.

My long term memory is far from infallible, VEE, but it is better than my short term one, so here goes:-

Berwick, East Stirlingshire, Stenhousemuir, Stranraer and a n other. I don`t think it was Cowdenbeath, I`d have remembered that.

Tough games coming up Big T, Darvel have done very well this year and won a very strong league. I think St Cuthberts won the South. Could really do with more promotion and relegation so more clubs get the chance of coming up into the Lowland League. Same with the SPFL, bottom 2 teams should automatically go down replaced by the Highland and Lowland League Champions

Sad to see Cowdenbeath’s decline. I remember when they made the top league in the early 1970s and beat us at EEP with John Dickson the classiest player on the park that day. He scored with a 20 yard shot into the top corner and Andy Kinnell was one strong centre half.

In the mid 1950s the Scottish Leagues were expanded from two 16 team divisions to the 18/19 set up that many of us older Pars will recall from our childhood. Cowdenbeath (the first lower league club to win at Ibrox, in a League Cup quarter final tie in 1949) had long been part of the second tier and were joined by Montrose, East Stirling, Berwick Rangers, Dumbarton and Stranraer. Glasgow Rangers had been opposed to this expansion, a fact they were reminded of a dozen years later when the mighty Berwick knocked them out of the first round of the Scottish Cup!

The present day pyramid system is much fairer than the closed shop arrangement that existed back then, when the club finishing bottom of the league had little incentive to develop. The Pars never suffered that indignity but immediately post-war we were often outside the top 20 teams in the Scottish Leagues, pretty much where we are now.

I suspect you were joking there, Zod, but many a true word is spoken in jest, so the saying goes. I`ve visited a couple of Cowdenbeath Primary Schools several times for the Pars Tackle Health programme, before the pandemic put paid to it just over 2 years ago. As an icebreaker, I would ask the children to tell me their favourite team. Not one kid owned up to supporting either Cowdenbeath or the Pars. Far and away the most popular answer was "Rangers." I`d then ask them whether they meant the original club or Rangers 2012 and be met by puzzled looks.

Another Rangers hotspot is Kincardine, btw.

Cowdenbeath`s Central Park was the first football ground I was ever in about the age of 5. The teams they were playing then were the likes of Forfar, Montrose and Brechin City. Somehow I never had much affection for Cowdenbeath FC, even though I still consider it my home town team. The "Blue Brazil" tag is a bit of an embarrassment considering their history and present situation. I suppose they put one over on us in the 2014 playoffs. But if survival seems a tall order for them, getting ourselves back into some sort of credibility may be equally as difficult.

In Sammer`s absence (perhaps he has been sanctioned? :) ) I`ll answer the question.

The five clubs that came up from Division C in the mid-1950s to make up 37 league clubs were Berwick Rangers, Brechin City, East Stirlingshire Montrose and Stranraer. (The first three have dropped out of the SPFL in recent years, and Montrose almost did so as well.)

In 1964 Rangers tried to dissolve the SFL and reconstitute it with 32 clubs (two divisions of 16 each.) Out would go Stenhousemuir, Albion Rovers, Berwick Rangers, Brechin City and Stranraer. The case went to the Court of Session which found in Rangers` favour, but eventually a compromise was reached that allowed for reconstruction but retaining league status for the five small clubs.

It`s not so long ago we played Cowden at Central Park and the turnstiles couldn`t cope with the crowd. They had to open a gate in the perimeter fence and set up a table beside it where they took the cash. I think one of their directors came over to help out and supervise. Does anyone else remember that?

Remember watching the Mill team playing down the Ballast Bank during the sixties Billy was obviously the standout player, but the hardest was Davie King.

Have officiated Tranent couple of times this season and they have been really poor and not really played exciting football.

I am also interested in the play-offs to get into the Lowland League. As my user name suggests I am from Darvel although now a season ticket holder in the Norrie. Darvel had an amazing run to clinch the WoSFL including 4 games in 8 days. Title winners after Auchinleck dropped a few points in the run in. In the last game the front line was ex pars Ryan Thomson and Andy Stirling. They play Tranent at home so I might just get through there to see it.

I can see online the match at Darvel on 28 May (2pm). Is it a one-off match or is there a second leg?

It’s a 3 way play off stanza.

22/5 Tranent vs St Cuthbert

25/5 St Cuthbert vs Darvel

28/5 Darvel vs Tranent.

The SoS is comparatively a much weaker league than the west and the east. I’d expect the first two games basically being a hunt on who can get the most goals so they can draw the last game

Big T absolutely hammered St Cuthberts today 7-0. Fantastic display, with some cracking goals. Beat Darvel next week and we`re there.

LIE FORRIT TRANENT
