When I first read this I wondered what you were on about dafc but have just seen the news. I am pleased that title has been restored as we had previously been a City and Royal Burgh until that title was removed I think by local government re-org in the mid seventies.
When I read it I let out a cheer, my mum and dad would have been delighted by that news.

Dunfermline has never been an official city despite being a historic capital and Royal Burgh.
I`m still surprised that Scotrail didn`t look ahead and name Dunfermline Town (prev. Dunfermline Lower) to "Dunfermline Central" when they had the chance some years ago. Need to update their signage and timetables now.

I have it on good authority that moves have been afoot for sometimes to rebrand the club as Dunfermline City FC. This news will expedite the process. A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes in a move that will see us become a Scottish feeder club for Manchester City

I have no authority on this whatsoever, but I love this idea. We could be the next New York City FC, Melbourne City FC, Girona etc etc

`Rebranding` makes a football club sound like a product.
I get annoyed when the BBC shows us on their results, fixtures, etc on their website as `Dunfermline` but other `Athletics` like Alloa, Forfar and Annan get their full name.

It IS a product. The `City` brand (the official one associated with CFG) has a high brand value. We would attract some interest (and possibly some `global` fans) if we were associated with City.
I mean this is all hypothetical - I don`t think there`s any serious discussion - but I`m certainly not opposed in principle and can see an upside if we do it well.
The BBC website is surely down to character limits and nothing else.

Completely disagree TB - tweaking your name to reflect a change to the categorisation and classification of the place you call home does not make you a laughing stock or bear any resemblance to Gretna’s rise and fall

It will to others though. We are Dunfermline Athletic FC. Our name is on the Scottish cup. Our club played in Europe etc not Dunfermline City.
St Johnstone didn’t change their name when they got city status.

City Football Group. The company that owns Man City, New York City, Melbourne City, Yokohama Marinos, Girona.... And probably plenty others. Think they have an interest in a baseball team as well.

Clearly if you start a new club, you`ve no history - much like The Rangers 2012 version.
If you re-name an existing club, you might lose some identity, but it clearly doesn`t erase the history.
Fairly straightforward.

I don`t know anything about city status, but does it bring lots of perks since so many towns apply for it?
I wonder why Brechin, which is little more than a village, has a football team called Brechin City? Was it just a pith taking exercise by the club`s founders?

How about Atletico Dunfermline or as a Glaswegian might say Atletico Dunfermaline, pronouncing the line as it is spelt. The Atletico might ingratiate us more with our continental cousins and give us the motivation to rub shoulders again with the European elite. On the other hand it may just lead to ridicule as in the case of Athletico Pumpherston.

I think the name Dunfermline City FC is already taken. I played for a team of that name in the Dunfermline & District Juvenile (age 27 and under) league in the early 1960s. Home ground was Rex Park. We weren`t very good and were always much nearer the bottom of the league than the top. It`s a bad omen for re-branding the Pars.
Just thinking back to those days I missed a lot of the best times at EEP because of playing on a Saturday afternoon. Attendances at EEP must suffer by a few hundred each game due to guys playing Boys Club/ Juvenile/ Junior etc on Saturdays
