Bit gutted to see him go, making his debut way back in 2013 I`d actually seen him quite a bit for the U19s due to the job I had at the time and to me he always looked like he had potential.
It`s pretty rare nowadays for a player to be at one club for so long, while injuries interrupted his later years at one point he was the best left back in the Championship, reaching his peak with that performance against Celtic at Parkhead.

Good luck where you go, I`m sure he`ll be a success.

This. Shame for Lewis, would have been great to see what he could have achieved if he`d stayed injury free. He would have had a good career I think.

Good Luck Lewis I would have loved to see you stay with us, a great talent hindered by injury.

I used to think either that Lewis would become a long serving stalwart for years to come or would earn the club a good bit of money in a transfer to a wealthier club. Sadly his injury/illness has put paid to that and it confirms that football can sometimes be a cruel game. Best of luck for the future Lewis.

Another one who could have been a decent championship level player but injury put a halt to any hopes of that.

Alas we don’t owe him anything and I’m sure he’ll find a gig somewhere else. Wouldn’t be suprised to see him end up at somewhere like Kelty.

Things will be looking up……..now yogi is gone!

All the best, Lewis. A good player whose career has been blighted by injury

Sponsored his away shirt every season since he was 17 or 18 so met him at sponsors lunches over the years. A very unassuming lad and cruelly affected by injuries and illness over the last 4/5 years.
I wish him the very best for his future.

I will always remember his goal against The Rangers from a superb power header from outside the box to get a well earned draw and sending Pocahontas (forgot his real name) into a rage.

Good luck Lewis 👍

Sorry to see you go Lewis, you did well coming back after your serious injury. I thought that you would have been offered a new contract. Hopefully you will get signed up by someone else, you are a terrific left back.

Is he currently fit, or injured?

I do find it a bit strange he’s not regarded as being able to do a job for us next season as a versatile defender in the 3rd division?

A very versatile player and would be an asset to any team if he could just stay fit.

Good luck to the guy. Wish him well and thank him for his service.

That said, if I can play Devil’s Advocate for a moment, if we’re all honest with one another, Lewis Martin’s level of ability probably encapsulates the standard we’ve set as a club in the last 10 years: average.

Whilst I value loyalty to the club, he’s an unremarkable player.

He was a revelation when he was switched to left back. I hope his catalogue of injuries and illness don`t stop him pursuing his career elsewhere.

Me too. Can only think the club has run out of patience with his injury and he`s been deemed too big an injury risk for the new season.

Sad to see him go but the brutal reality is it`s just too much of a financial risk to offer him a contract with his injury problems. I hope he manages to find another club - maybe part-time?

Only 26 so if he can prove his fitness, I think he could still play at a decent level for a few years.

Needs a run of games and doubt he`d get that here, but I`d be delighted if he was offered training facilities, has a good pre season and somehow finds his way back into the team.

In all honesty I don`t think our management or board know how versatile a player he is. He can play anywhere on the back line, or probably anywhere else in the team. I`ve seen him score from his head and his feet. If we`ve let him go without the manager seeing him play in a bounce game, it is terrible.

Agree with FCDA. He`s been a good servant to the club. Just because he hasn`t been signed up immediately doesn`t mean he won`t be.

Think if Lewis was fit would have been a good player in League 1 for us. Flexible where he can play in defence as well.Disappointed he didn’t get a contract with us, Highly likely another League 1 team will take him.

Did that not happen to Lee Bullen? Binned initially by Calderwood then managed to do enough pre-season to make him change his mind?

Wouldn`t surprise me - is he not from that area? (Mind you that would mean a plastic pitch for 32 out of 36 league matches!)

I completely understand McPake being ruthless and not renewing contracts in a team that was relegated, but I do think that at 26 Lewis still has the potential to have a successful career in football if he can get fully fit.

He is from and still lives in Bonnybridge so would be very handy for joining Grangemouth mob.

Yes, that`s why I suggested that Grangemouth might be a decent destination for him. All the best Lewis. You`re a good lad and a fine player. I hope you`ve had all the bad luck you`re ever going to have as you`ve had more than enough for a lifetime.

How long ago now was it Lewis looked like he could go on to be a good player for us? The club has supported him so much with contracts and during prolonged injury crises. He was been lucky a few times that we have given him a deal.

Some on here seem to feel like we owe him a living. Injuries take their toll, he may never get back to the level where he was a decent championship player and that’s the level he was at, at his peak.

Surely with our limited budget we should be using it for players who we expect to be fit for the majority of the season - good player he may be but unfortunately Lewis will be a gamble for any team who takes him on.

When Ryan Williamson and Lewis Martin both came into the first team it was reasonable to expect they would both go on to have long and successful careers, either for DAFC or for bigger clubs. Sadly, serious or long-term injuries have blighted both those careers.

But football is a cruel game and I agree we are not in a position to offer contracts to players the manager (or medical staff) think might not justify the wages. Good luck to Lewis though.
