Big game tonight, with more eyes on it than Scotland are used to.
I`d be supporting Ukraine against anybody else but tonight I`ll be on the same side as Putin for a change!
Can we do it? I hope so.

Huge opportunity for the tartan army tonight. Don`t boo their national anthem - sing it.

Watching the run up to the game, you would think this was being broadcast by the Ukrainian Broadcasting Corporation, Scotland are only playing a bit part in this
We really are on a hiding to nothing tonight, as someone else said “damned if we do & damned if we don’t” All it needs is for the situation to be playing on one or two Scotland players minds & transferring that uncertainty onto the park
On the field of battle we are on the same side but on the pitch we should be adversaries……….. Anything else & it won’t work & it’s not fair to expect this of our team tonight
Where’s the ref from? & what’s going through his mind?
To be clear, I’m 100% behind Ukraines fight with the Russian aggressor but this is a game of football & there are 2 sides playing for success
If we win the game tonight that’s a huge mind game win also, However we then go forward against Wales as the victors over poor Ukraine!!

Utterly woeful. Wrong team to start. One paced and pedestrian, chasing shadows.
Gilmour ? Why? McGinn and Robertson were even poor and with Tierney and Patterson missing we had no one to make things happen.
The bench? As I alluded to before KO had nobody who could turn the game, apart from maybe Christie.
Two keepers and I think five defenders on the bench…..a virtually untried striker and an untried striker….Turnbull should have been there…maybe injured though?
Dykes? Sorry not good enough at this level.
Let’s hope they can at least put in a shift in these three Nations league games, because that performance tonight was simply woeful.
Only saving grace was at least we can’t get knocked out at the final hurdle now.
Don’t think we would have beaten Wales anyway…..even on a good night.

I was talking to two bekilted Anglo Scots last night in Argyle Street who had come up specially for the game. I feel very sorry for them after that performance. The Ukrainian sports journalist who wrote Scotland off before a ball was kicked seems to know what he was talking about.
But never mind, my former team, Yoker Athletic are in the Scottish Junior cup final on Saturday at Rugby Park, live on Alba at 4.10, against Auchinleck Talbot. Come on ye Whey Ho(not much of a nickname but never mind.) A total disaster of a season may be redeemed if Yoker can write their name on the cup. For me at least.

Well thank goodness that’s over! Just back from Hampden and I congratulate Ukraine on winning the match but….The Ukrainian appreciation society moves to Wales. We were beaten before a ball was kicked:-
1. Former Scotland captain supporting Ukraine
2. We’ve asked by some to sing the Ukrainian NA.
3. Pitchside compère wishes BOTH sides luck!!!
4. We’re asked to pick the best Ukrainian player and donate.
5. just in case Ukraine need motivation we’re shown a video of war torn childrens playground on the big screens around the park! And a chat from their First Lady.
WTF organised that!
It’s a football match ffs.
Good luck Wales, you’re next.

To be honest mate I don`t any of that was really a factor. We were miles off it today. Formation didn`t seem to work too well first half, defensively we were poor, our midfield weren`t great for long spells and Che Adams seemed to be leading a one or a two man press that allowed them to be played around as no-one else backed them up as it seemed half the team were sitting which rendered it ineffective.
Had a decent 10 minute spell but we need to take chances like the McGinn chance when we`re behind. Gordon was top drawer and Adams worked hard but I don`t think there were too many other pass marks out there today. We were just poor all round.

I’ve followed Scotland since 1950’s Sat through some horrible times, doom and gloom but never experienced anything like the things I listed above afforded to an opposition team at Hampden. Even World Champions didn’t get half of the above !

This may sound like sour grapes, but if your country had to miss only one WC finals in your lifetime, would you not pick this year`s desert edition in Qatar? A tiny but super rich nation, who bought the finals by bribery and one in which countless workers in the construction industry have faced appalling conditions, with hundreds of deaths due to a total lack of regard for their health and safety.
I consoled myself with this thought when Italy were knocked out in March. Now that Scotland are out as well, I`m seriously thinking I might give the tournament a body swerve. No doubt my resolve might weaken when it kicks off but right now I couldn`t care less.

I hear what you`re saying, DPB, but I`ve always thought that the leading football nations should have taken a stance when Qatar was announced as the "winner" of the hosting rights for WC 2022. They had a second chance to pull out in protest when the FIFA bribery was uncovered a few years later, but they hid behind the fear of threats by Qatar that they would sue for the costs of building the WC stadia.
It was hardly our decision to make in Scotland`s case either - that was down to the SFA, but I`ll take the accusation of being a bit of a fox, on my foxy chin. 🙂

PMSL! Hanley is way too slow and cumbersome to get anywhere near them. Scotland got their tactics and line-up totally wrong and lost to a superior team.

Why have McKenna, Hendry and Souttar on the bench but start McTomminay at CB? The whole team selection and game plan was wrong right from the start. We literally took KO in the first half and booted it out the park. Clarke got it wrong big time and he`s way too conservative. His substituted are almost always baffling. If we hadn`t qualified for the Euros through the back door(which McLeish got us to) then you`d be asking yourself what difference Clarke has made. Ross Stewart on almost 30 goals this season doesn`t get on the pitch when we need a goal even though Che Adams was one of our worst performers. The who Scotland set-up ought to be ashamed of themselves for that utter garbage last night. Its honestly so frustrating watching them and now we need to subscribe to another platform to watch them I dont think I`ll be seeing them any time soon.

Not sure why folk are that shocked. We`re not very good. The Euros showed that - woeful against the Czechs and miles off the standard of Croatia - as did our qualification group where we had one good result and performance against Denmark and the rest was very much as expected but not great. Ukraine did well at the Euros and had a much tougher group (which they managed to complete without losing a game including to top seeds France). I`m just glad it`s Ukraine that put us out, I wouldn`t have coped well if Bales knocked us out.

Aye, some of the performances in the qualifying campaign were as good as we`ve been in over a decade.

I suspect your suspicion will probably turn out to be bang on the money, TOWK🙂
Much as I hold the Qatari regime in contempt, I`m a complete hypocrite when it comes to watching world class players in action. I watched a good number of games at Russia 2018, their annexation of Crimea long forgotten. That was night and day compared to what Putin`s troops are doing in Ukraine now, of course.
It`s also OK to regard owners of football clubs separately from the team on the park, imo. Only a troglodyte (or a one-eyed United fan) would fail to appreciate the football played by City and Liverpool this season. I know Newcastle fans hated Mike Ashley with a passion, so much so that they`ve accepted their new dodgy Saudi owners with barely a murmur, but it didn`t stop them turning out in droves to watch the Toon battle relegation every season.
I`d be surprised if you yourself have any time for the parasitic Glazer family, but it doesn`t affect your passion for the team, even though there`s been precious little to arouse that passion this season.

He`s absolutely not useless if you`re comparing him to the last managers we`ve had since 1998.
He`s probably got the best out of a very average squad of players that had us banging at the door unlike previous tournaments.
I didn`t agree with his line up last night and was frustrated like everyone else at our lack of desire until 20 minutes to go but overall, Stevie has been our best coach in 20 odd years without question.

Except Mcleish was at Rangers before he managed Scotland and not after but don`t let the facts get in the way.

Sorry, forgot it was Birmingham who McLeish walked away for. Must have been the prestige & money rather than the honour of managing the Scotland national side.

Scotland never perform well in the daytime a bit like vampires.
All of our big performances have been night games, strange but true...

We play pihs in daylight..... capiche ?
And tend to although not always turn it on under floodlights... that are switched on.
All the WC qualifying games in the 70/80/90’s. Wembley Don Hutchison, France twice. Recent performances... before Ukraine game, all dark o clock games.
Really struggling to think of a big win in daylight?

Ukraine 3-1
The Netherlands 1-0
Germany 1-1
England 2-2........
(OK I know you said wins, but good results nevertheless)

Obviously GG is correct in his correction, the Italian word is definitely spelled "capisci".
However, in Italian-American slang and particularly in popular culture depictions of Mafiosi, the word is often spelled "capiche" and pronounced with only two syllables. So assuming (from his/her name) that desperado tends to operate on the wrong side of the law, perhaps the spelling could be allowed ...

I thought someone would have asked about my reference to Zibi Boniek. He usually reserved his best displays for midweek European ties and was often anonymous in Sunday pm games in Serie A.
A frustrated Juve President, Gianni Agnelli, sarcastically called him Bello di Notte (Beautiful at Night) a play on the French film, Belle de Jour (Beautiful by Day.)

I was surprised by the over-confidence amongst the fans and media in the run-up to the match. I heard a few pundits saying we had better players than Ukraine and were a better squad. According to the FIFA rankings Ukraine are ranked 27th in the world and Scotland are 39th. Regardless of the tribulations suffered by the Ukrainians, which were likely to inspire them rather than demoralise them, it was always going to be a tough game for Scotland to win.

With home advantage, I thought Scotland might have made a decent fist of it and maybe even sneaked a win, with a bit of luck. I agree though that the confidence leaves were over optimistic and misplaced.

Watching the game though, you wouldn`t think there was `only` 12 places between the teams. Considering we had home advantage, we looked about 100 places lower.
