I was convinced it was offside but the commentator never mentioned that possibility so I assumed I was missing something.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Watched it on DSTV and was astonished the ref gave the pen and just as bemused at the commentators who said it was the right decision….!
He was offside. Defender never touched him and Kane deliberately stubbed his toe into the ground and dived.
How the ref could watch that on replay and think it was a pen is baffling…

How VAR could award that decision compared to the penalty claimed VAR denied Ukraine against Wales is baffling . On Sunday I heard Martin Tyler say Yarmalenko was denied penalty because of “maybe exaggerating how he went down” . It shouldn’t matter if he goes down while doing a version of Riverdance , if a technical foul has been committed it is still a foul and be awarded penalty .. that is different to blatant diving when not touched or tripping yourself up or initiating contact like Kane did

Kane shot by the mystery sniper again, thought he was offside as well.

I thought the defender`s knee caught his foot. Didn`t look like a dive to me.

I`d just gone to look at the highlights off the back of this thread and I`d agree with that. Looks pretty clear from one of the angles but not so clear from the others.

There was the slightest tangling of legs which actually caused Kane to kick the back of his own heel and fall over. If I could write the rules myself it would be no foul, no penalty and certainly no booking for the defender. But to suggest Kane cheated is ridiculous.

I believe VAR was meant to intervene when they deem its a clear and obvious error?
If that`s the case, then they should have let play go on and accepted the ref`s initial judgement?

This is one where I need the offside rule clarified.
He was clearly offside when the initial ball was played. He was still in an offside position when the ball was deflected - however I think offside wasn`t considered in the decision making because the ball came off a German player.
However, I though the rule was more nuanced than that - I thought the German player needed to have played the ball `with a deliberate act`. I didn`t see many angles but it looked to me like the ball just hit the German player because the pass was misplaced. I didn`t see many angles of the deflection so can`t confirm, but the VAR didn`t even seem to bother checking if the German player deliberately played the ball or not - and I don`t know why they didn`t check that.
Kane definitely made the most of it as well. I was surprised it was overturned given how limited the contact was but if we`re in an era where contact = foul, then so be it.

He`s definitely a cheat but of course, the English commentary teams are blind to that.
I thought he was offside as per Bandy`s description, but it didn`t appear to be considered.
I also thought the replays shown by the VAR were pretty poor. Only after the decision was made did they show a 3rd angle that was a lot more useful and confirmed the dive, in my opinion.

Yes, he`s a cheat and quite a dangerous one although not specifically in this game. The number of free kicks he "wins" by recklessly endangering a defender trying to win a header against him is ridiculous. Someone is going to get seriously injured unless referees start penalising him for his non-competitive way of "challenging" for high balls.

Jamie Vardy and Raheem Sterling like a dive. Do the media or pundits call them out about it?
Spot the connection?

Yeah - Kane`s even won penalties for that one. Waiting for his opponent to jump before backing in before falling over claiming a foul. What`s incredible is that that foul is often a red in Rugby (I remember Finn Russell going one for doing the same to Dan Biggar)..but in football it`s a foul against Kane.
here`s a little vid.

I think Southgate might resign after this.
I don`t think he is a bad manager, but the England fans hate him and it will only get worse between now and the world cup. If the Netflix programme following the players` partners goes ahead then he should run a mile before it is too late.

I`m not sure Southgate will resign - unless England are planning on hiring a `World Cup specialist` (like Bora Milutinovic was hired by loads of countries back in the day).
By most measures Southgate is England`s most successful manager in the last 50 years - yes things have worked in his favour (talented players, easy draws, home tournaments etc etc), but he`s done well.

Indeed. To sack him off the back of a few Nations League games in June would be a bit crazy. He`s equalled their best performance in any World Cup on foreign soil and presided over their best ever Euros. I think he`s enough credit in the bank.
They`ll likely go on to have an OK World Cup in Qatar - probably knocked out in the Quarter Finals and he`ll get hounded out. You can already just about hear the white van men lining up to call him "tactically naive" on Talksport in the aftermath.
