Scotland`s European champions
Robin Rae (Hibernian), Dave Beaumont (Dundee United), John Philliben (Stirling Albion), David Rennie (Leicester City), Brian Rice (Hibernian), Paul McStay (Celtic), Dave Bowman (Hearts), Gary McGinnis (Dundee United), Pat Nevin (Clyde), Gary Mackay (Hearts), Ally Dick (Tottenham). The substitutes for the final were Ian Westwater (Hearts), Billy Livingstone (Wolves) and Sammy McGivern (Kilmarnock). Jim Dobbin missed the game through injury and Celtic team-mate Jim McInally was suspended.
McInally never learnt his lesson both as a player and manager!

I heard a preview of this programme on the radio but there was a mystery as to whether there was any surviving footage of the tournament.

Some decent players in that squad. Jim Dobbin was from Dunfermline. Which player from that bunch played in a UEFA Cup Final, a UEFA Cup Winners Cup Final and a European Supercup, and finished his playing career with his one and only game for Alloa Athletic?

Wonder what happened to McStay.
Never really hear him mentioned these days, never did any media stuff nor did he do any coaching as far as i am aware. Bit odd in current climate especially for such a talented player (putting it mildly) and a Celtic legend.

Didn`t Paul McStay move to Australia? I think he sometimes comes back to do Celtic-related stuff and I think he had a son who played at a lower level in Scotland.

Aye, Jim went to Queen Anne. Cracking player who was in the U-16 QA side which reached the Scottish Cup final. He also played for Scotland in the U-18 WC in Mexico, along with Westwater. They won their group but lost 1-0 to eventual winners, Poland, in the 1/4 finals. Dobbin played alongside Paul McStay in midfield, but Celtic only started him when McStay was injured, so he moved to England where he played for Doncaster, Barnsley, Grimsby and Rotherham.

Had totally forgotten about this too until I read Pat Nevins auto biography a few months ago where he talks about it obviously, skiving uni and not telling his girlfriend where he was going 🤷🏻♂️ Then coming back with a winners medal having scored in the final.
Considering they done this without the Aberdeen contingent was remarkable.
No footage is available unfortunately.

He moved to Australia and now runs a successful software company.

Saw the last 20 mins - great programme. Couldn`t remember us winning that trophy but maybe because the national team was doing so well.

I was 10 when this happened and remember my older brother and his friends being really excited about it. This means by about 1988 we will have a great chance at senior level..........ah well lol

I must admit I couldn`t remember anything about this tournament or us winning it. As it said in the film the war in the Falklands was on and the senior international team was preparing for the World Cup in Spain so maybe that detracted from the interest in it at the time. I do remember some of the players being part of a pretty successful Scotland schoolboys` international team which won at Wembley a few years earlier though.
