According to ParsDatabase we beat Buckie Thistle 2-0 at EEP in the Scottish Cup on 30/01/80 with goals from McNaughton and Leonard; no details on the strips though!

I remember playing Elgin City in the cup in January 1983 - Tom Forsyth promised a lot of changes beforehand and I didn`t recognise any of the team that took the field in black and white stripes. Then I realised we were playing in red.

Small thing here, but I was driving past East End about an hour ago and the next fixture sign is showing Raith Rovers from April. Simple advertising right there for people who don`t frequent this site or cows.

The original game on the Saturday in 1980 was called off at the last minute (after 2) with a lot of Buckie fans already in Dunfermline, there were a few less when the game got played mid week.

Buckie should just have changed on the team bus and ran straight onto the park, surely? 🤔

This game should be out of sight !
Missing a lot of chances (at least we are making chances )
And of course our final ball is letting us down also
Hopefully we will take some chances in the second half and put the game to bed
playing well and pressing high

Some good play tonight and some good goals. Great to see Tod and Rennie come off the bench and grabbing assists. Will give them a huge boost. Todorov looked really good when he came on and very unlucky not to get a hat trick - would have been a second assist for Tod as well.

Like this new shape. Think the back 4 seem to be a good group with a lot of balance to it. We’ve only played East Fife and Buckie so far, but there are plenty positives and players scoring goals/getting assists to boost their confidence has to be seen as a positive. We can only beat what we’re up against, after all.

Don`t really agree with that - after a good, quick first 5 mins, much of the first half got bogged down with slow passing that didn`t really get anywhere, and the one chance Buckie had came from a poor pass from this situation. And for all the short stuff, the first 3 goals that were needed to settle the game all came when we did something simple and got a cross in the box.

Obviously we deserved to win after dominating completely. Nice pass for the last goal, along with some good quick play in the first few minutes of the game.

It`s still a bit pre-season-like so hard to read much into it. For now though, happy to win quite comfortably, and a decent goal difference means that even if we lose one of the remaining games we`ll still have a chance of qualifying if we can win the other.

Agree with socks. Dominated, won by some margin but it was sloppy at times, including a very dodgy passback that Mehmet had to deal with quickly just before the fourth goal.

I would say that lower league teams can ruin the flow of games though. It`s one-sided so there`s no free-flow to the game. Players get bunched up and you end up with lots of lost possession, heading back and forth and a stramash in midfield.

I thought we dominated throughout , and could have been 3 up before we made the breakthrough.
I also think our passing was slicker than any of the guff I saw under Grant or Hughes , ok the final ball could have been better at times , but I`m liking what I`ve seen so far . All in all I`m satisfied with the progress .

Great start to the league cup campaign with good management of the kids to get them some game time. A couple of these boys have just finished 4th year at school so plenty time for physical development.

In the same competition last year we went to Partick and won 4-2 and following a narrow defeat at St Mirren we dominated two lower league teams which helped set up the trip to Ibrox, with a bit of luck hopefully we get rewarded with a pay day again.

Last season shows we ought not to be too influenced by results prior to the league as it’s a different game altogether but it’s good to see forwards getting ammunition, midfielders playing forward, the defence keeping clean sheets and generally more positivity around the place.

Are people here really suggesting that we don’t need new signings, because we beat Buckie Thistle 5-0?

We have no goalkeeping cover, no CB cover and no wingers. Our starting 11 is most likely good enough, I don’t think anyone is debating that. But it would be incredibly naive to think we don’t need new signings to provide depth/cover/other options.

Last night was good. We played well. But surely nobody believes that these 16/17 year olds are the only cover we need, to challenge for the title this year? As it stands, an injury to Mehmet, Benedictus or Breen and we’re in big trouble. But we still have people ridiculing people for suggesting we need more signings.

A goalkeeper, centre half, left back (all as cover) + 2 wide players. Easily need 5 further players.
We may not get them, but I think that`s what we need.
Nothing even remotely ridiculous to suggest we don`t.
Back to the game though, thought we played decent, there were some good passages of quick incisive one touch passing. Defence seems to be gelling well.
I like the look of Hamilton, he could be a cracking signing.
The strikers look confident and dare I say happy which makes a huge difference.
Definite good signs going forward.

The flame still burns

Not sure why my posts aren’t working with the quote. I agree with incognito’s needs, but I also think we need the option of playing with wingers, we currently have none. So that’s another 1 or 2 required. However, in order to get a balanced squad, I think we will need to offload a couple of existing players. For example, I can’t see a creative midfielder coming in, if we don’t offload an existing midfielder.

We need 2 centre backs and 2 wingers for depth alone, would bring us to 4 centre backs (5 if you include Young) and 3 wingers including O Hara as it`s likely he`ll be used here all season.

Hamilton, Todd and Dorrans would be the most used trio but Dorrans only managed 18 games last season and I wouldn`t expect him to top this by much so Chalmers and Allan as the depth isn`t enough here. Even with Tod, 1 more needed.

Finally, we only have 1 senior goalkeeper who didn`t play last season for obvious reasons, one more needed.

That`s 6 signings just for depth and rotation alone.

O`Hara is wasted playing where he did last night and against east fife.

In my opinion you would maybe see a loan goalkeeper or keeper aged between 18-21,22 to challenge Mehmet.

Would again maybe take a young loan centre half.

Two or even 3 wide players signed permanently.

Not sure how I feel about the midfield I think Hamilton offers something different than the others who I feel offer the same thing. Where do we get a josh Folkingham for example or Andy Geggan.

Upfront I don`t have any concerns although if it is the plan to play with one Upfront then we don`t need 4 but hopefully in league 1 we might use 2 strikers.

So for me we need maybe 6 new players.

One incident I quite enjoyed last night was when the ball was bouncing about quite dangerously in our defence. Last season somebody would have tried to control it, attempt a short pass to a team-mate and play it out of defence, sometimes successfully sometimes not. Last night Chris Hamilton just belted it out to safety. Maybe not total football but good common sense.
By the way put me down for 5 recruits.

Apart from when he got most up off their seat as he drove into the box, although his final ball was lacking. I am not saying we don’t need recruits but he certainly wasn’t wasted. Imo

How many loanees are we allowed this season because I suspect it`s the loan market that will provide any new recruits?

It`s always entertaining to hear fans` assessment of how many signings we need when they have no idea what the manager`s budget is and how much he has spent. I`d be surprised if he`s looking for 5 or 6 new recruits at this stage - more like 2 or 3 I`d say. A goalkeeper is a must (Jakub maybe?) and a genuine wide attacking player would help and probably cover at centre back although Comrie and Hamilton have both played there in the friendlies. Maybe the young players have impressed him more than he expected.

Tbh, none of can possibly know how well or otherwise the current squad would fare over the season, although I`m sure we can all agree that if James McPake can bring in a few quality players, it will improve our chances of finishing at or near the top.

Referring to the odd super optimistic Pars fan as a ******, is neither necessary nor classy. 🙁

Just because we won a victory on 12th July no need to feel as entitled as some appear to be similar to another team that celebrates a victory on the 12th July.

Thought last nights game was encouraging for the season ahead. Signs were there that we have a strong starting 11.

4/5 signings needed if we want to sustain a title challenge though. Otherwise we’ll struggle with any injuries/suspensions.

i think its still a maximum of 5 domestic loans wee_eck but as shown with the possible loan of Mackay from Hibs, attracting that kind of player to league 1 will be a problem. at the moment the loan market looks similar to the free agent market at the start of the summer with slim pickings in terms of what we need or can afford.

back to last night, about the only thing i took from it was Tod maybe looked a little more comfortable when he was moved to the right instead of the middle.
