Just been watching this pitiful display from Motherwell it must be up there with some of the worst performances from a Scottish side in Europe.
It also brings back a lot of bad memories from our own horror shows in Europe.

Comparing the players from each team (Sligo Rovers/Steelmen …. cough), on paper the Motherwell squad probably look more than capable, not of just being competitive but probably being favourites to win a two-leg tie.
What appears to have unfolded, is that one team of a dozen or so blokes has performed as a far superior ‘team’ than the other …. not just once, but on both occasions that they’ve played each other.
Moral of the story might be that for our own team this season, getting the squad to ‘play as a team’ might be far more important than signing ‘good on paper’ players whose general attitude might be too close to that of the Motherwell players in this game?
Have to wonder though, if you are a professional (Motherwell) footballer presented with the opportunity to play in European competition and this is what you serve up …. just what sort of motivation do you need to get out of bed in the morning?
“Football is a beautiful game,
It should be played beautifully.”
Brian Clough.

Skonto Riga beat Aberdeen in 1994 which was a shock result at the time. The Latvian team boasted no great pedigree, having been formed only a few years earlier. The Sligo defeat of Motherwell is part of a pattern that has persisted since then: Motherwell probably holds some unwanted record for being knocked out of Europe by teams nobody had previously heard of such as MyPA-47, Kuban Krasnodar and Stjarnan.
They are hardly alone. We lost to FH of mighty Iceland and St. Johnstone lost to FK Trakai. The Old Firm have their own shameful defeats to Artmedia, from Bratislava and Progres Niederkorn, from Luxemburg. The Scottish game remains in a poor state but no one seems unduly concerned so long as the Old Firm can lose a Europa final every 10 years.

It wasn`t always so bad for Motherwell. In 1960 they met Brazilian side Flamengo whose British tour had included a 5-0 defeat over Manchester United. At Fir Park they were overrun 9-2 with Ian St. John scoring six times. The legendary Brazilian midfielder Gerson, one of the greatest playmakers I have ever seen and fulcrum of the 1970 WC winning side, played in this match as a teenager.

Isn`t there a problem playing Irish clubs because they are well into their season whereas for Scottish clubs these are usually the first competitive games? Having said that, Sligo seem to have excelled themselves whilst Motherwell were way below their normal standard.

We are 9th in EUFA coefficient rankings, Ireland are 40th.
As pointed out by the Scotsman yesterday our ranking is due almost entirely to the success of the OF, the rest have been abysmal. Example; Dundalk can boast negotiating three qualifying ties to reach EUFA group stage. No Scottish outside the OF have done that. Ever

Countries playing summer football have a distinct advantage in these early rounds. However, Motherwell`s form after the Premiership winter break was abysmal and they seem to have carried that into this season. In reality it would have been quite a surprise if they had beaten Sligo over the two legs.
I know it probably won`t happen but I think all the smaller Scottish clubs will always struggle in EUFA tournaments until we introduce summer football.

Well not really.
First of all if you read the statement from Motherwell it looked like Alexander initiated the conversation.
Secondly, I’m sure I read somewhere that Motherwell have only won 3 times in the whole of 2022. Exit to Sligo was always going to be hard for the manager to survive.

Motherwell will be looking for a new manager. I hear through the grapevine that Peter Grant and John Hughes are available for offers.
