Another day and still no progress on signings a few posters saying we need 4 or5 on board.I think if we do get signings it will be lucky if it’s 2 .It will be panic stations if our central defenders get injured and don’t get me started on wingers if they have no money let us know so we willl just have to accept it .

yeah I thought maybe even 1 today, I think come the end of the transfer window it would be good to know what kind if challenges they have faced.

Is it lack of money although that would be doubtful because Cook mentioned we had one of the largest budgets in the league.

Have we not sold enough season tickets.

League 1 club folk don`t fancy dropping that far down but then free agents at this time surely can`t be fussy who they sign for now.

Loan signing might not be for a few weeks.

McPake suggested more potentials coming in. Said pre-match that we need to strengthen.

31 days is another four matches-we could be on the front foot, or well on the back foot by then.

Highly unlikely there’ll be more players available than there is now?

The manager will have known weeks ago who and what he requires so sod the 31 days, get them in now!

Which clubs are you thinking of? We are competing with full-time clubs which are probably playing at a higher standard than we are. If it was as easy as you seem think it should be surely we would have finalised our squad by now?

Yeah those players Raith and Queens signed up fair hit the ground running on Saturday.

I`d rather go with what we have and give it as long as possible to get the right players. Hughes hosed the cash he got on dross like Ambrose etc. I`m hoping McPake has more of a clue.

Some fans think we didn`t let enough go! It`s easy to say we should have signed more without telling us how to overcome the problem of attracting full-time players to League 1. Unattached players are probably thinking they could get a better offer before 31 August.

it`s funny how we haven`t really heard a peep from anyone at board room level apart from two Cook interview.

But somehow now all of a sudden they are responsible for blocking transfers because of financial reasons.

Where on earth is the rumour coming from and who at the club is leaking the information or is it Utd leaking the information.

Well given I`ve said it came from a Utd fan on P&B, I`m going to hazard a guess it`s at their end. Same guy also said Falkirk were interested at some point as are Airdrie but his preference is to come here. If our owners aren`t going to stump up a loan fee or a wage contribution though, then he`s not coming.

there are plenty of questions that could or need to be asked over signings, recruitment, scouting, planning, were any lessons learned from last summer before/after Grant was appointed.

McPake has talked about the club having a "process"...which is? who is involved?

or is the answer to everything its the German`s fault/Brexit/Covid/relegation?

Falkirk were always going to go for it this season so it stands to reason there would be a high turnover of players.

We have a relatively high amount of our squad contracted until next summer so our hands are tied somewhat.

The manager will add if he thinks they`ll improve our squad. It`s that simple

I`m going to regret saying this, but surely Stephen Kenny was the worst? Got us relegated and then looked like he`d get us relegated again if he hadn`t been sacked. Maybe my recollection is poor and I`m exaggerating.

Edit: Kenny was worse than Hughes but better than Grant.

As has been said many times on here - Kenny`s record was terrible, but that`s not down to him and him alone. It`s fair to say that the squad (which had some good players) were not all pulling in the same direction during his time in charge.

There were some remarkable recoveries from long term injuries as soon as he left.

Opinions, up until Potter he was the worst of my lifetime (admittedly, only the 20 odd years).

Criticisms of the squad not pulling the same way etc all come down to poor management, then giving those players contract extensions? Absolutely atrocious.

He spun a pretty good yarn at a supporters meeting though which helped him.

Was it 9 league games without a goal? Howling.

We actually went 9 consecutive league games without scoring a goal when Kenny was in charge. That was in the middle of a 15 game streak where we didn’t win a league match. Whilst we were going through the run of 9 league games without scoring (and 15 without a win), we managed to put Rangers (3-2) and Hearts (1-0) out of the Scottish cup.

The manager is responsible for selecting the right team/tactics and motivating the players to perform to the required level. As you say, he gave contract extensions to some of the players that were supposedly causing him problems. I genuinely don’t understand why we seem to have a number of fans who will jump to his defence at every opportunity. His time with us was a disaster.

Having said all that, he’s definitely not the worst manager we’ve had in the last 30 years. Potter and Grant beat him. With Grant winning that ‘battle’ by a significant margin, in my opinion. Grant came in and spoke about winning the title, then failed to win a single league match and you really have to consider expectations when analysing the performance of managers. That’s also why Potter would be 2nd place for me. It will be tough for anyone to top Grant and I certainly hope that we don’t end up discussing whether any current or future manager is worse than him!

Very much agreed, if I were to have them in order it would be Grant, Potter, Kenny with Hughes a smidgen behind.

Unless I`m missing someone obvious I think they`re the only outright bad managers we`ve had since I started supporting Dunfermline, we`ve had a lot of ok and meh managers, but to only have four bad ones is fairly good going.

That two of them came in one season is pretty painful.

Not sure he`d have anything to do with Mochrie, doesn`t play in the same position or that.

It is very bizarre that everything seems to be taking so long.

Munro. Maybe not the worst manager we ever had but certainly the worst period after the highs of the Leishman era.

Be interesting to know if we are still paying off grant and Hughes if so maybe this is one of the reasons we are struggling for signings.

Ranking managers of since Paton (where i start - leaving McPake out for the moment)

Paton
Calderwood
McIntyre
Johnston
Jefferies
Crawford
Campbell
Leishman (2nd spell)
Kenny
Hay
Hughes
Potter
Grant

Amazing to think the 3rd/4th managers on this list are generally regarded average at best by fans across all clubs nowadays.

BEAST!

I`d chuck McIntyre in there.
Improved us year on year, won the title. Did oversee a poor Premiership season but in hindsight, those were the first cracks showing for admin.

Allan Johnson also isn’t getting behind. His record winning league 1 and play offs for premier league bearing in mind limited budget in hindsight is pretty impressive. Compared to what McIntyre etc had to spend on players

AJ won league one with a massive budget and being the only full time side, before finishing 5th and 4th in the championship, he`s firmly in the "done OK" sphere of managers.

Seems very unlikely. Usually there would be agreed compensation/notice period written into the contract. Also, given the official announcement was that Hughes ‘resigned’ he almost certainly wouldn’t have been entitled to the remainder of his contract, or the full compensation he would get if we sacked him. If we hadn’t been able to negotiate a lesser payoff than he would otherwise be entitled to, we wouldn’t have announced it as a resignation.

I think the judgement of David Hay is quite harsh. Similar in some ways to Iain Munro, he came in at a time when the club had just got to the highest point realistically possible, and the only way was down. Both come in the lower half of the list since 1989 (when I first saw the Pars), but neither is anywhere near those at the bottom.

Until last season, John Potter would comfortably have taken bottom spot, and at the time I quite honestly thought I could have done a better job than he managed. However, he is now comfortably clear of the bottom two places. Grant is probably slightly more culpable and takes bottom spot, but Hughes, with his passy-passy pihs-pihs insistence, isn`t far ahead.

At the top it`s Paton then Leishman, with not much to impress behind those two. The statement that McIntyre improved us every year is wrong - his first full season in 08/09 was quite poor and we regressed compared to the second half of 07/08 when he took over. We finished 3rd in a very tight league in 08/09, but were closer to the bottom than the top on points, and at one stage looked to be going only 2 points clear of the relegation play-off. Greg Ross scuffed an equaliser at Airdrie to make it a little more comfortable but I felt it was quite a poor season.

Finished 5th in 07/08, finished 3rd in 08/09. That`s an improvement to me tbf.

It wasn`t a great season in a ridiculously tight league, but he done a decent job in turning around the Kenny decline in his first half season, after that I don`t think anyone was expecting a title charge but he laid the blocks that would bear fruit in later seasons, it was a big squad turnover.

McIntyre never finishing lower than 3rd in the second tier when he had the full swason is a good record, and one we`d absolutely kill for now.

Would never have him back.A back stabber,as,were a lot of the squad at that time. They let us down big time.No matter who the manager was, they thought they ruled the roost. Shameful.

Jocky Scott stands head and shoulders above all those managers mentioned above as by far the worst manager in my 45 years of watching Dunfermline. We’re about to head back to Meadowbank for a game. Anybody else remember Jocky’s post half time wave to the crowd there? What a wan£er.

3rd in 08/09 was higher than the year before, but on average it was poorer than McIntyre`s part of 07/08. I remember us being on something like 12 points when he took over in December, so his bit of 07/08 was good to get up to 5th place, but definitely not progress in 08/09.

Indeed, we`d all love to be in that sort of position now, and I suppose it`s about where you finish relative to where you`ve come from. Worth noting that despite the hatred of Iain Munro, his Pars team in 1990/91 actually finished 8th in the Premier Division, even after all the emotional upheaval over the summer of 1990. That was the same position as in Leishman`s last season the year before. Not quite the complete failure of a Pars manager many have him down as.

In the dictionary under troll, there’s a picture of you sitting behind the goals in the Norrie. Do you think you could contribute to threads rather than be an erse every time.
