 John “Yogi” Hughes RIP
Topic Originator: Raymie the Legend
Date:   Mon 1 Aug 23:57

The former Celtic legend has passed away, aged 79
Injury robbed Hughes of appearing in the 1967 European cup final, having played in the previous rounds.
He scored 189 goals in 416 appearances for Celtic over 11 seasons.

RIP

It's bloody tough being a legend

The original `Yogi` was built like a rugby full back but had a surprisingly dainty side step. His power and pace made him quite a handful for defenders but Jock Stein didn`t rate his ability to lead the forward line so used Hughes mostly as a wide attacker. Yogi was a formidable sight when in full flight although not a player who ever gave us too much trouble, thankfully.

A phenomenal strike record. The goal that comes to mind for me is a neat diving header v Leeds in that epic 1970 European cup semi at a packed Hampden.
(Could someday link that please as this old diddy cannae)

I also recall he had two goals nominated for goal of the season whilst at Chrystal Palace, one of which won or was runner up or something

Can`t agree completely with Sammer - Yogi could give us a hard time down the left wing, especially at Parkhead.

Once he got a head of steam up Willie Callaghan would bounce off him.

One of my vague memories of the `61 final was him bursting through on goal and Eddie Connachan bringing off an "impossible" save.

RIP

Five survivors, I think.

John Fallon (unused sub keeper), Willie Wallace, Bobby Lennox, Jim Craig and John Clark.

Standing just behind the dugouts at a game in the mid 60’s and within 10 yds of the pitch I saw big Yogi run straight through wee Willie Callaghan and he didn’t even break stride!
Feed the bear was the cry from the Celtic end.

Chrystal Palace have put up a video of him scoring two sensational goals against Sheffield Utd in 1971. On Palace tv
Must be the ones I mentioned above.

I couldn’t find any of Yogi’s goals at Crystal Palace but here he is wearing the number 7 jersey alongside Charlie Cooke and Ian Philip beating Man Utd 5-0. Don Rogers did a good impersonation of Pele on the day.

There are longer highlights here which show a few Yogi runs and suggest the score could easily have been 10-0. Not such good film quality though.

The goals v Sheffield are Yogi at his best. I don’t know if this link will work. If not just type in John Hughes goals v Sheffield United and the Crytsal Palace site should come up.
