Match thread: Kelty Hearts 0-0 DAFC FT
Topic Originator: buffy

It’s the big derby day in Fife (apparently 😂)

Given my lower back has gone kaput so not attending the match, thought I’d get this thread started (and I was looking forward to sharing a Mr Blobby biscuit with BuspassPar tae).

Kelty haven’t started the season well under new manager John Potter ~ let’s hope that continues!

Mon the Paaaaars! 🖤🤍❤️

Other SPFL1 scores

Airdrie 2-0 Alloa
FC Edinburgh 0-2 Falkirk
Montrose 2-1 Clyde
Peterhead 1-3 QoS

We are not playing any football here at all, and the one time Kelty had a bit of pressure was the direct result of a yawning gap in the centre of the park. Best chance of the game there though, free header from a corner and we really should be 1-0 up.

First game this season I was convinced we`d win comfortably. Very disappointed we`ve failed to trouble them but it again shows how badly we need bodies in. We`ve got away with it in our home games but at least our defence looks solid. Biggest test next week.

I am always positive , but that was 2 points dropped from a team that hasn`t picked up a single point in 3 previous games against FC Edinburgh, Clyde and Alloa . you need to win these games if you want to win the league and we cannot blame artificial surfaces either
I am sure you know we need natural width !! and the right personnel in the door to have that winning team we all wish for !
Raymie knocks it on the head for me no creativity in that team

This was a tough match and Kelty were a solid team.

Pars had a good fighting spirit about them and appeared the stronger side throughout.

Threw everything at the Kelty goal in the last 15 minutes and Jamieson pulled off some heroic saves to keep the scores level at zero.

MOM for me was Edwards with Benedictus second.

Good game.
Great derby.

McDonald can delver a cross, can’t see why he’s not worth a start as when he came on the game changed from defence to attack

Would be even better if he took the ball to the bye line then put the cross in

When’s McPake going to realise that the 3-5-2 is the best system we’ve played? Our best football has been played when we’ve changed to 3-5-2 with MacDonald and Edwards getting balls into the box. Should really be starting games with that setup, rather than sticking with the experiment of Wighton/O’Hara as wingers. It just doesn’t work.

Maybe McPake is being backed but he’s choosing to spend his budget on the calibre of player he wants as opposed to just anyone who’s available. He’s taken a risk by letting this run so far in to the season but so far it’s paying off for him. I think we’ll see two or three in by the end of the month but time will tell.

So we`re back to `the board aren`t backing the manager` arguments. I thought that had been knocked on the head? Isn`t it more likely that good players won`t want to play in League 1 if they think they can do better? Things just go round in circles on here.

We won’t win every game this season, 3 wins and a draw is a good start despite our threadbare squad.
Yet to concede a goal in the league this season and haven’t really looked like losing one.
Kelty maybe part time but have a few players that at their peak would have walked into our team today (Higgy, Cardle, Tidser, Foster, O’Ware).

correct dd23 but is that level of player going to be available then? there comes a time where you have to move on from your top targets and get the next best available signed.

"Raymie is spot on that our lack of creativity is not a new thing"

and rectifying that should have been in the top couple of priorities in planning for the season or preseason, if any was done, no matter who the manager was.

Kelty bullied us Higgy got away with a lot without the ref picking him up for it. We should have won the amount of chances we created late on but still short of a couple of players which hopefully we can get in once the loan players start getting released.

Frustrating game all round - thought we were going to nick a late winner though.

No idea how O’Hara stayed on the field - I just don’t see what he adds. I’d have kept McCann up front with Todorov - or start with Mochrie and bring Wighton on up front from the bench.

I feel MacDonald has done enough to justify a start as well - he has real strength and is our best crosser of the ball (and was unlucky not to score).

Won’t be a bad point if we can get a win next week.

Saw Van Bronckhorst saying today that he needed to strengthen his squad but thought transfers would go right up to the wire. Why should we be any different? I’m with those who are prepared to have faith in McPake and the board. Better that than be in the position we were with PG last year - lots of incomers but basically a load of shoit. Keep the faith, guys and gals.

We`re all in the same position. If teams at the top can`t get guys in then why would they release their fringe players to club like us? Even within our league we`re fighting over a small pool of players. Brexit has screwed transfers from outside the UK, which affects us and other teams.

Got to keep MacDonald in the team.....its a no brainer !!!
The amount of grief he caused Kelty......the quality of cross he put in as well...
BTW one of the worst referee`s I have seen for many a year.....

Brexit has screwed how long it takes for transfers from outside the UK, not that they cannot be done as other teams have shown including the likes of Clyde. if we were going to go down that route that needed to be started a couple of months ago because of how long it will take, min. 3/4 weeks at best? Bangala at Ayr got his permit the other day after 10 weeks!

I`ve mentioned in previous threads that the standard of officials in this league is absolutely honking. I actually think Kelty should have had a penalty for handball in the first half. It was right after their player went down looking for a penalty.

I think the display today shows why we are in this league , shocking tactics, no creativity and a total lack of anyone up front who can put pressure on an opposing defence

The results in previous weeks have papered over the cracks as we have had that little bit of luck in certain games but we need to add some creativity to the team if we are to win this league

Gallagher at Airdrie would be a good start. Knows where the net is too.

We`ve done well to win a couple of tight games against Alloa and Montrose, but I suppose it just shows that you won`t win all the tight games in a season.

The first half was absolutely awful from us. Played like it was a friendly and just didn`t get into it at all. Decent save from Mehmet at his near post and we got away with a couple of things, including a bit of fannying about right on the half-time whistle.

Second half was better, but a lot of mistakes that stopped us having any sustained pressure. We did have chances and could have won it but, as it`s been for most of the season, we just haven`t been good enough with the chances we do make. And when you don`t have that many in a tight game, sometimes that will cost you points.

Puzzling to make the change a couple of minutes into the second half. Why not just do it at half-time if you`re going to do that? Again, we were definitely better after making the change and we surely have to be looking at starting some games with that shape. If we`d scored late to win 1-0 it wouldn`t have been underserved but, like the other tight ones, either 0-0 or 1-0 would have been fair reflections of the game. And today, 0-0 was probably closer to the mark, as both sides had a half when they were the better side.

Referee was dreadful. So many subtle wee fouls that he just missed completely. It shouldn`t have been a difficult game to referee, but he did his best to make hard work of it.

While our team and the ref didn`t have the best of days, that was nothing compared to the absolute fannyish behaviour from a few behind the goal. Chucking things at someone on the park is pathetic and should not be happening.

Did say on another thread that this was a banana skin and I would be happy with a scrappy 1-0 win. Some folk seemed to think it was going to be a walk over……never.

As has been said we lack creativity, pace out wide and we have four strikers that can hardly hit a barn door. Thankfully we have been solid defensively.

Next three fixture will tell us where we really are.

I will be pleasantly surprised if we win one of them.

It will be next season before JM can get the team he wants.

This season will be a struggle I feel.

Always happy to be proved wrong of course, but this squad of players ain’t going to win this league I am afraid.

I think Falkirk, Airdrie and QOS will finish above us.

Could well be right Desparado. Too many thinking we are entitled to walk the league… we came down for one simple reason, we were not good enough, and there is a ton of work to do yet to turn that around, even though we’ve started the job reasonably well (joint top)

Kelty were even worse. They offered nothing. Team full of total jokers.

I thought At home to Montrose was a poor perfformance and we would kick on from there ,oh how wrong was I ,surely there is a manager out there who can see that at times (mostly today ) where a formation or personnel needs to be changed during a game ,I`m not calling out for a managerial change but we`re getting worse with each game we play , McCann is not the answer up front on his own as wighton and O`Hara are non existent mostly, comrie will never be a player ever ,were playing with a 5 man midfield effectively but there`s only 1 player who has the ball and nobody to play it to and if the other midfielders do get the ball it`s played on so fast (usually the wrong way ) that they should be standing watching like the rest of us ,still unbeaten ,no goals conceded ,we are Dunfermline Athletic we demand more .

12. Yeah, you want to be beating Kelty Hearts but let’s keep the head.

We’ll learn more about the players in games like Airdrie next weekend than we will today.

Not a great performance but also not a terrible result. Yes Kelty had lost their opening 3 but were clearly more up for this game. After 4 games 10 points is good, haven`t yet conceded a goal so now just need to add a bit more attacking threat to the team through recruitment. Certainly nothing to panic about yet, just have to hope between now and the end of the transfer window some more quality can be brought in to help the squad.

Unbeaten start to the season, yet folk are acting like we got beat yesterday. Falkirk beat Peterhead and Edinburgh city and according to some they are now going to win the league 😂, they got absolutely pumped from Airdrie. I’m sure we’ll get the players in but for some posters to think we’ll be finishing 4th is laughable tbh

It is bizarre making predictions after 4 games when no one on here can possibly have seen all the teams in action even once.

I went to Kelty yesterday expecting a hard-fought game like an old-fashioned Scottish Cup tie played on a tight pitch and that was what we got. One thing we are a lot better at this season is pressing the opposition when they are in possession and that stands us in good stead in games like yesterday`s. Hamilton is a big part of that. Playing Wighton and O`Hara out wide is never going to work though.

Totally agree Wee Eck, Wighton and Ohara are like playing with two men short even at this level, we totally lack anyone up front that has the skill to beat a man in a one to one ,Mcdonald must start next week at least he gives us a bit of width and makes a few decent crosses .

Wighton and O`Hara are awful in their current roles. Every time we change formation and bring McDonald and Todorov on, we look better. Been critical of Edwards and McDonald`s crosses in the past but yesterday they put in some good ones and nobody got on the end of them. Todorov missed a sitter.

Plus point is we haven`t conceded a goal but finishing has to be much better. Even in the warmup before the game, some of them can`t hit the target with no defenders pressing them. A couple of good signings would sort things out though.

We have most of the players who weren`t good enough, dropping down a league and playing against a lower level of teams, has given us a decent start, but under no illusions that we are any better than last season.Where can we find a player who knows how to put it in the net,we are sadly missing in that department.

I liked Matty Todd at RB at the end of last season, he gets forward more than Comrie, he would give you some width thats lacking. Obviously given the lack of alternatives in midfield that’s not going to happen anytime soon.

Not the worst shout with Mochrie in the middle. Where does that leave Comrie though? He doesn`t look like someone that would naturally play through the middle but maybe he can?

The game itself was terrible. I thought Kelty shaded the first half – we were fortunate that the BeneBreen pairing managed to redeem itself after a couple of lax moments. Todd’s enthusiasm was presumably curtailed after his yellow card which didn’t help. We did finish the second half strongly, and we might have sneaked a winner if it had gone on another 5 minutes (or we had made the changes 5 minutes earlier) but for large, yawning periods of the game we lacked creativity.

A point away from home isn’t a disaster. Next week will be a big test, but come through that, and we are looking like a team on the rebound rather than the slide, and conceivably a more attractive proposition to players looking for a contract. When does the transfer window shut?

I’m becoming less and lass convinced by the starting formation. It seems less of a 4-3-3 than a 4-3-1-0-1-0-1 with players completely isolated from each other. Wighton and O’Hara have zero goals in competitive games this season –and never looked like adding to that tally. 3-5-2 may well be the way to go, despite the horrendous evidence of last season and McPake’s antipathy. Who would have imagined Kyle Macdonald as being a regular impact sub??

Speaking of substitutions, like Socks, I was bewildered by yesterdays decision. If you are going to make a radical change, then do it at half-time. If you are going to tweak the system (or reemphasise the instructions) give it 15 minutes to see if it’s making a difference. Wighton had combined with McCann to send a shot just over so I actually though things might be improving. Or you could have said to McCann – bust a gut for 15 minutes then I’m taking you off. I’d also question the use of three at once. I know that you can only stop play 3 times to make the changes – another argument for making the switch at half-time - but playing all your cards at once reduces the chances of finding a winning combination.

And as for the clowns throwing things – they should be identified (privately) and banned.

I don`t understand the logic of McPake.

He says Wighton is playing with 2 dodgy knees and he needs to Mochrie up to fitness.

Play Mochrie from the start to build up his fitness and use Wighton as a sub. It makes no sense all the while Wighton contributes nothing.
