 Age Barrier

Ozpar raised the issue of age relating to World Cup teams. I delved back to 1958 and it is pretty rare to have players over 30 in a winning side, just as it is for teenagers. Pele, Bergomi and Mbappe are rare examples of the latter.

Goalkeepers are a different breed- Dino Zoff was 40 when he won- but the oldest individual outfield player seems to have been Brazilian full back Nilton Santos at 37, closely followed by Miroslav Klose of Germany. Oliver Giroud would come into that elder statesman category were France to win the tournament this year.

The Brazilian winners of 1962 had 5 outfield players aged 30 or over and was described at the time as a team ‘hardening in its arteries.’ This is very unusual for WC winners. Much more the norm is their celebrated team in 1970 which had only one outfield player aged 30.

Brazil 1970 did also have a 29 year old Pele!

In this World Cup, you’re allowed to use 5 subs, compared to none pre 1970. You can probably get away with a few ageing players in your 26 man squad.

If memory serves (maybe`s aye, maybe`s naw ) when Roger Milla made the headlines in the 1990 WC some media reports claimed that he didn`t know his real age at the time.

He knew his age alright, VEE, but chose to tell reporters he was younger than he really was. He claimed to be 38, but it`s generally accepted he was 42, which makes him the oldest goalscorer at a WC finals.

Milla was 38 in 1990 GG.

He became the oldest WC finals scorer in 1994.

Google certainly backs you up, VEE, but I remember there was some debate about his real age at Italia 90 and the general consensus is that he was 42. Now that may be rubbish but he allegedly had no birth certificate and therefore no proof of age. If he was 42 at USA 94, he was still older than Samuel Eto`o is now and he retired some years ago.

I know this is off topic a wee bit but has there every been a father son partnership at a World Cup or in any league?? Just when you see posts about the oldest goal scorer being 38/42 it could be possible exceptional circumstances but possible

Thiago Silva became the oldest Brazilian outfield player to play at a World Cup tonight at 38 years and 63 days.Dani Alves was on the bench at 39 so will break it if he makes an appearance at some point.
