Best XI players at East End Park
Topic Originator: brian
Date:   Wed 28 Dec 19:32

The Dunfermline Athletic Heritage Trust have, for a few years, fun over the festive period, this year is a bit special. They are compiling the best XI to have played at East End Park, with some of the best footballers ever to play in the potential final Xi lineup.

From Christmas day until the 7th of January they will be running polls for you to vote on the DAHT Facebook page, vote for your choices to get them in the final XI
DAHT Facebook Page

Once all is revealed they would love to hear about your own best XI as there really is too much to choose from.

Whilst none of these players were Pars players the DAHT have just published a database, with almost every post war player that has played for Dunfermline, on their website DAHT.org.uk

The first poll was three goalkeepers including the first player to reach 1000 appearances in English football. Please vote on the DAHT FAcebook page (there are polls further down list you can still access):

DAY 1 : Goalkeepers - Pat Jennings, Gordon Banks, Ivo Viktor

DAY 2 : Goalkeepers - Pascal Zuberbuhler, Bruce Grobbelaar, Kasper Schmeichel

DAY 3 : Defenders - Severino Reija Vazquez, Georges Heylens, Ladislav Novak, Svatopluk Pluskal

DAY 4 : Defenders - Oelg (Oleh) Kuznetsov, Terry Butcher, John Greig, Tommy Gemmell

DAY 5 : Midfield - Stilian Petrov, Ryan Giggs, Trevor Brooking, Jean Tigana

DAY 6 : Midfield - Josef Masopust, Jim Baxter, Roy Keane, Ray Wilkins

DAY 7 : Midfield - Jon Goikoetxea, Sigfried Held, Patrick Viera, Martin Peters

DAY 8 : Forwards - Paul Gascoigne, George Best, Wayne Rooney, Steve Archibald

DAY 9 : Forwards - Denis Law, Ferenc Bene, Geoff Hurst, Billy Bingham

DAY 10 : Forwards - Siggi Held, Paul van Himst, Robin van Persie, Kenny Dalglish

DAY 11 : Forwards - Henrik Larsson, Savo Milosevic, Nwanko Kanu, Thierry Henry

The next phase is the play offs and populating the XI, the goalkeeper play off is happening just now first place will be in the team the second will be on the bench.

DAY 12 : Goalkeepers - Bruce grobbelaar, Gordon Banks, Pat Jennings, Kasper Schmeichel

This will repeated for the other positions until there is 15 players, the formation they are looking for is a 3-4-3 with the realisation that some players won`t be in their more natural positions.

Next final is for the defenders, Pluskal is through outright so who joins him...

DAY 13: Defenders - Georges Heylens, Severino Reija Vazquez, John Greig, Terry Butcher

two groups of midfielders
DAY 14 : Midfielders - Stillian Petrov, Jean Tigana, Joseph Masopust.
DAY 14 : Midfielders - Jim Baxter, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs.

With the game tonight off let`s finish off the best XI by your votes, Dalglish and Law are through but a few places remain. Who makes it?

DAY 15 : Henrik Larsson, Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney, George Best

I think that looks like the final poll

No place for Paul Van Himst in the midfielders lists ?

One of the best players to appear in a Euro match at EEP.

Was thinking that myself. Thought David Seaman was better than kasper schmeicel personally. Surely Vieira and Henry will make the 11

I`d personally stick up the starting 11 that night and be done with the vote!

Still 28 players to be unveiled. (Still 7 days of Christmas and 4 players per day)

These include all the forwards and most of the midfielders.

So Paul Van Himst may still appear (what a good shout that is). Also plenty of scope for Arsenal players to take a bow.

p.s. I saw Geoff Hurst play here for West Ham, though it is Clyde Best who stands more vividly in my memory

Indeed, I`m younger than some but if I were to make a top x11 it would primarily include the Arsenal and Man Utd sides that played here.

Seaman
Dixon-Pique-Adams-Cole
Ljunberg/Pires-Vieria-Scholes-Giggs
Henry-Rooney

And you`re still leaving out great players from those games, like Scott Thompson.

Will be some team, some great players have played against us. Personally would have stuck to competitive games tho or a lot of fans who started in the 90s would just be an Arsenal and Man Utd 11, not even Laudrup/Gazza/Larsson etc breaking into Grants team above.

Found it, 15th January 1969, making him older than I thought, still a great player!

Scholes should be in. Have to admit I never entirely understood the hype watching him on TV until I saw him in person at EEP. Seemed to know where every player was on the pitch and could find them thanks to his precision passing. He completely orchestrated the play.

The fact someone like Henry is not even considered when a bunch of guys who just were lucky to look good when they were playing against a bunch of unfit unprofessional jobbers is madness. I get it’s the heritage trust but that doesn’t mean players should be promoted just because they played along time ago.

Runs until the 7th so could be in those still to come.

It would be crazy if Henry wasn`t in. He was runner up for the ballon d`or just a few years later.

Agree with what you are saying on there being an uneven spread age wise.

Also, Ashley Cole. One of the most decorated left backs in the game

That Arsenal side were immense. They ran rings round us without every really getting out of 1st gear. Top quality players everywhere. Viera ran the game from what appeard to be about a ten yard square in the middle of park and all the rest were just quality footballers. And we had a not bad side then too.

Feyenoord did have some good players in that team, but I don`t think Van Persie played. I do mind speaking to Peter Van Vossen and Ulrich Van Gobbel in Lorenzos later that night. It was 8 - 2 to them but they both reckoned their team as a whole barely broke sweat and could have scored more if they had wanted too. I remember being a bit surprised that Van Vossen smoked (it must have been before the smoking ban came into force too. The days where you could take a swig from your beer bottle in Zo`s and end up having to take a fag dowp out your mouth)

As for goalkeepers - Jose Iribar of Atletico Bilbao (competitive appearance at EEP)
should be in the mix.

I`m thinking there ought to be two separate team lists - players who have had a competitive appearance at EEP - and another for friendlies/testimonials.

I notice Gerard Pique had the privilege of playing at EEP. Didn`t stand out that night but must be one of the most highly decorated players to have played here. Obviously went on to win the world cup, euros and champions league on multiple occasions.

Maybe it`s because I played centre half but I thought Pique did stand out that night-he did have very little defensive work to do in fairness.Maybe it was because he is about 6ft 5 and dwarfed almost everyone on the park.
Then again I also thought Chris Eagles was excellent in that game but he didn`t go on to have the career I expected.

I`ve been told that Van Persie played in Scotland V Netherlands age group game at East end Park. Not researched it though.

I’ve studied a lot of games and events at EEP not including the pars and never came across this game. Details of it would be very much appreciated

That doesn`t ring a bell.

We`ve hosted three? U21 games I can think off (Belgium twice and Denmark), and we had an U17 game against Cyprus?

To be honest, this poll had the potential to be really, really good. Even if you just consider the Scottish players that have played against us on league duty, or the players that have played against us in European competition. Bringing friendlies into it kind of lessens the effect but I can see that there are good players in there too. There was scope to make this a lot better, make it bigger, shortlists for each position on the pitch, and a wee bit more research on if they actually played here or not

The next phase is the play offs and populating the XI, the goalkeeper play off is happening just now first place will be in the team the second will be on the bench.

DAY 12 : Goalkeepers - Bruce grobbelaar, Gordon Banks, Pat Jennings, Kasper Schmeikel

This will repeated for the other positions until there is 15 players, the formation they are looking for is a 3-4-3 with the realisation that some players won`t be in their more natural positions.

Maybe just me, but the misspelling of Schmeichel has put me off the results completely.

With the game tonight off let`s finish off the best XI by your votes, Dalglish and Law are through but a few places remain. Who makes it?

DAY 15 : Henrik Larsson, Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney, George Best

I think that looks like the final poll
