An interesting article on Alan Rough in the BBC news. Awarded an MBE earlier this year but went through some hard times. I worked for a spell in Peru 2004 and every taxi driver used to bring that world cup game up and mention Roughy in goal.

I also recall a game at Partick when he was in goal. When the ball was at the other end of the park he would turn around and have a bit of banter with us.

Think he has more than burned through his legendary status with Partick fans over the past few years.

I remember watching the perm on the telly at the world cup, thinking he was honking. Then seeing him live in the flesh for in our two cup ties at Easter Road in the 80s, where he was excellent.

Remember him saying he probably should have moved before he did but he just loved playing for Patrick Thistle.

It`s silly hating Roughie for a few bad performances for Scotland, we should save that hate for Stewart Kennedy.

Scotland has struggled to produce top quality goalkeepers in my time watching football. Italy, Germany and England often had two or three really good keepers at the same time. They are bigger countries of course but Ireland came up with Pat Jennings, Wales with Southall, Sweden with Hellstroem and the Finnish goalkeeper who played for Hearts and Southampton looked top drawer. Mid sized European countries like Belgium or Holland usually have an impressive last line of defence.

Rough was pretty good and the best we had at the time. At top European or international he was just so so.

He had a sensational few years playing for Hibs when he was by far the best goalkeeper in Scotland. But yes, the World Cup game against Peru when he was rooted to the spot as Cubillas (I think) slotted one into Rough`s top left hand corner, was not his finest hour.

Your comment took me back to my younger years. I watched Kennedy play for Forfar playing Clyde at Firhill and his shot stopping was incredible. I always wondered if Kennedy never played for Scotland, would he have been more successful as a club goalkeeper. There was always that stigma attached to him due to Scotland.

Yes he certainly was a decent keeper for Forfar, he always seemed to play well against us.

Funny you should mention Clyde, he made his first senior appearance in a League cup match for us against Clyde at Shawfield, I think that was his only competitive appearance for us.

I`m sure many will remember his last senior appearance when he played a one off game for St. Johnstone on new years day `92 at the age of 42 against us at East End, we got pumped 3-0.

I think you are being more than a bit harsh, goalkeeper has been one of Scotlands strongest positions since the 1980’s a forty year run that now looks to be coming to an end but we have had the likes of;
Jim Leighton
Andy Goram
Neil Sullivan
Rab Douglas
Craig Gordon
Allan McGregor
David Marshall

All being highly capable goalkeepers and Leighton, Goram, Gordon and McGregor being absolutely top quality

I used to be a season ticket at Thistle, when I lived opposite Firhill. I remember seeing a reserve game where a new young keeper called Alan Rough turned his back on a shot which went in, and I immediately wrote him off as a prospect ...

Just watched the 9-3, I think he is off the hook for 7 of them. Haynes and Greavsie fairly put us to the sword.

A week later he faced the Pars at Hampden and had a clean sheet.

Its childish hating any one .. much less saving a hate for an individual from 48 years ago
He was a good Pal of mine and we played together .. was with the Pars around 1966/7 and we were both ecstatic at the time .. He`s a funny guy and used to make us all laugh with his daft humour .. signed for Rangers but they had Peter McCloy as first choice ..

He played one game for St Johnstone aged 42 in 1992 and kept a clean sheet at East End Park as they won 3-0.He became St Johnstone`s oldest ever player in that game.

I wasn`t even alive 48 years ago. It was just a joke to start talking about Stewart Kennedy.

Although there was a a bit of graffiti after the game I recall hearing about.

"They shot the wrong Kennedy."
