 John Sweeney (d)

It`s sad to note the passing at the age of 88 of John Sweeney who was a member of the 1961 Scottish Cup winning team. After that he turned down the offer of full-time football as he was establishing his own joinery business and left the game at the early age of 27. There is a comprehensive account of John`s time at the Pars on COWS.

Sad news RIP John.

Until reading the article I didn’t realise some of the cup winning team were part-time players. Makes the achievement all the more impressive.

Eddie Connachan was a miner in his parallel career - I believe he did a shift before the ‘61 replay.

John Sweeney replaced the injured Jackie Williamson for the `61 replay and since he usually played left back, the obvious move would have been for Sweeney to play left back and move Willie Cunningham to centre half in place of Williamson. Cunningham had played centre half in the 1958 World Cup after all.

Stein`s tactical thinking was different. He moved left half George Miller to centre half and played Sweeney at left half with a mission to close down Willie Fernie, Celtic`s playmaker. John Sweeney did that job very well and played a full part in the Pars victory.

Well done the club - that’s a very fulsome tribute to a man who will forever have a place in the history of our team.
Thank you John and RIP.
