 Signings for next season
Topic Originator: kozmanout

Hopefully we get things wrapped up within the next week, this should give us a head start on the recruitment front.
Who would everyone like to see us bring in?
First pick for me is Ruari Paton from QOTS.
Another 2 goals yesterday, and seems to score all sorts.
I think he would be an decent signing.

Wouldn`t say there have been too many players from this league that I`ve been overly impressed with. Paton perhaps, Agyeman. Charlie Riley of Albion will have a number of suitors. 21 goals in 32 games from midfield this season. Only 21 years of age too.

I’d love KRH to sign, of the others mentioned yeah it might be worth a punt on one or two if they don’t demand too high of wage, largely on the squad I’d keep the majority but would certainly seek a handful of additions and for them we should be targeting guys at top end championship at least, we have a really strong foundations and if we are go and do what we wanted to achieve about 14 months ago then proven quality is needed.

KRH is a player that is enjoyable to watch but doubt the wages from sevco to us would be realistic.

The attacking midfield boy at Albion Rovers Charlie Reilly seems to have an incredible record this year for a terrible team.

KRH is okay at this level....just. He hasn`t exactly set the heather alight when playing for the Champions Elect, and he does go into hiding for large parts of the game, as we seen at Falkirk yesterday. We are going to need better players than him if we want to make the next step up

Charlie Reilly - banging the goals in every week in midfield for a poor Albion Rover team. 21 goals in 30 games and Albion have scored a total of 41. Would love to see him at the club.

Tommy Goss is another one that deserves a chance at a higher level. 22 goals in 30 for Annan.

He has been a bit part player at a club 11 points behind us.
If he`s not good enough to get regular game time with a club significantly worse than us, why do you think he would be a good signing. Makes no sense to me.

Not his fault his gaffer can`t see he is one of their main threats. I was always happy to see his name not on the team sheet when up against them..

Big step up for this next season assuming we get up. Okay we had a different manager etc but we went from being pumped every week to only losing 1 game all season having only signed a couple of players which suggests the quality of opposition has been a large part of that.

If we keep mostly the same squad as this season we might well struggle, especially scoring goals.

If we have any sort of budget we should be looking to bring in players who have been on the fringes of the premier league teams and have that but more experience, seems we have the ability to offer 2-3 year deals again which will defo help attract better players.

Haven’t seen many players in this league who have been stand outs when we’ve played them, Airdie been the best team I’ve seen so must have a couple worth a gamble on, thought McGill was dire when he was with us but has come on leaps and bounds and would be an improvement on McCann, o’hara and todorov.

Things will be looking up……..now yogi is gone!

Are all these suggested signings out of contract? Whenever these threads appear it`s clear fans are prepared to take a chance on players currently at one or even two levels lower than we hope to be at and yet some of our own players who have been part of our own very successful squad are not nearly good enough for a higher level apparently. It`s dangerous to assess players based on how they played against us in a few games or based on bare statistics. Remember FEB too!

James McPake always says recruitment is a continuous process so I`m sure he will have identified targets some time ago and probably done some preparatory work already to facilitate signings.

^^ Morrison isnt and wouldnt be worth the transfer fee, the rest are although the clubs would be due compensation if they offer new deals etc apart from Agyeman who is already 23. Paton is rumoured to have signed a precontract somewhere already also.

the head start comment, i only see that if we were looking abroad so you can get the appeal/permit process started to try and get the player here as soon as possible and not be waiting potentially months for it all to be completed.

have said before the 2 areas we are lacking are a proper left winger/midfielder and probably could do with a big central midfield type which hopefully will be sorted in the summer, there wont be massive changes if the club/McPake have their way.

Jordan Allan was touted on here as a possible target in the January transfer window based mainly I suspect on the fact he scored a couple of goals for Clyde against us at EE. He ended up at Falkirk where I think he has started one game, made 9 appearances in total and scored one goal. He came on for the last 20 minutes on Saturday and was pretty anonymous. I was at a `Meet the Manager` event in February and his name came up. JMcP said we hadn`t been interested in signing him but it sounded as if we had done some research on him.

“There wont be massive changes if the club/McPake have their way.”

Good. In my experience significant change doesn’t always lead to improvement. I don’t recall Leishman making significant changes to his team as we clawed our way through the leagues all those years ago. Building team spirit is often more important than building a squad.

We have been very fortunate with injuries and suspensions this year but i`d flip that from my usual glass half empty mentality and say well done to the medical department as aside from that we look a lot fitter and stronger than last season and that won`t be a coincidence either with how few goals we have conceeded.

Only Falkirk player who looked like he would improve us is the Ukranian lad - not attempting to spell that - and he isn`t even their player.

Still think we need an old school #9 but with the system we play Wighton is the best we have by a long shot in that respect. Not sure on O`Hara and Todorovs contract situation but would be surprised if either are here next season. Gallagher at Airdrie looked decent but again depends if they can effectively play in a 451 and all the stuff that goes with it when we don`t have possession.

Don`t get folk talking about McGill. He has scored 4 league goals against the top 6 teams in the division. He hit a hot streak of 7 in 3 games against the 3 bottom teams last month.(Airdrie scored 17 in those 3 matches!)Halfway through February he was on 4 goals in 25 appearances.

First signing will surely be Fisher, only played 90 minutes twice since returning to Dundee and if they go up they`ll be wanting more established players to keep them there.

Rangers would be due a fee on KRH if we offer him a contract and they match, but getting him back on loan if that happens would be huge. Mochrie doesn`t quite fit the system so wouldn`t be too keen on bringing him back. Mahon i`d probably keep if the deal was right, understands how Mcpake wants to play.

I think Mcpake is likely to go back to 4-3-3 should he be able to bring in the types of players he wants which means 2 more wingers would be needed. A more dynamic centre mid to replace McGowan who I would not keep, seen how much we missed Todd when he was injured so need someone else that can do that role.

Would keep Wighton and Toddy as well as McCann who is under contract, would reluctantly release O Hara, works hard but not been nearly as good as expected.

Matty Todd has the potential on that I agree, Callumn Morrison is a workhorse who put a hard shift in every game we have played against him, at times he simply outclassed us especially the first time we met this season. Hope we can sign him and Burrell, Many of our current squad were part of a set up that got relegated we need new faces that can challenge in the coming season not comparisons to developing Pars players.

The team next year will be built around Matty and Bene, we defo need a new keeper, a center half and a strike force.

Where the management prioritise I`m not sure probably up front but everyone is looking for a 20 goal a season man.

Denis has had an outstanding season but misplaced loyalty has seen many a team struggle when they go up. His positioning to me is suspect.....too static while team`s are advancing towards our goal imo.

One thing is for sure, the management and recruitment team have got a very difficult task this summer......that`s not to say its not a task they will love having.

Mochrie has another year on his contract anyway, I agree about him not quite fitting in. think he needs to be in a team that plays a bit more football.

Hope KRH signs, Mahon has barely played this season so cant see Mckpake wanting him back taking up a wage.

It`s just as well it`s the manager who decides on signings rather than the fans.

Re comparisons with last season`s squad - is it likely he will assess players based on performances in a season when he wasn`t here?

Re Mehmet - I`m no goalkeeping coach but it seems to me modern goalies aren`t encouraged to come for crosses as much as they used to be. When Mehmet does come for them he usually gets the ball. I`m also struggling to think of any goals conceded for which he was solely responsible. He also has great reflexes.

Re McCann - it`s academic what fans think as he`s still under contract and the manager obviously rates him. Oh, and he`s scored twice and had two assists in the last three games.

2 seasons ago Todorov was 2nd top scorer in the Championship (only Boyce at Hearts scored more)O`Hara was 6th.The season before that O'Hara was 3rd top scorer whilst playing for Alloa-only beaten by Nisbet and Shankland.

To be clear I wasn`t commenting on his willingness or unwillingness to come for crosses,

It was his lack of movement between the sticks in general that`s concerned me. I would expect a keeper to be more mobile as the play switches flanks when the opponent has the ball.

He`s probably has the best season of his career but how much of that is down to the defence.

I`ve seen enough great keepers in a pars shirt to know that Deniz is average at best.

It`s obviously his best season as the most games he had played in a season before this one was 9 for Port Vale.He has played more games for us than the rest of his career put together. He has 25 starts for us but only had 23 in his career up to that point. I hadn`t realised he was so inexperienced before joining us but he wouldn`t be a priority to replace imo.

Well hopefully he`s just had a career of bad luck up to this point and he can kick on for a few years but it looks like everywhere he has went he has always been deemed 2nd best.

If he has a good next couple of years then we`re having a good couple of years so I`ll gladly take back my criticism. :-)

To be fair, if we`re going down the route I expect it will be a stable ship next year with more youngsters coming through the ranks. It won`t be pretty but we should survive next season.

The alternative is to try and buy success but the reward is never worth it once you reach the Premier League.

He may have been 2nd choice, but everywhere was at a level higher than the one we are currently at - and at least as high as the league we`ll likely be in next season.

I think he`ll go but it will be because we`re outbid from a wages point of view rather than us holding out for someone better. He`s done virtually nothing wrong this season and on course for the club`s clean sheet record.

I wouldn`t keep any of our strikers that are out of contract at the end of the season.

Wighton P-32 G-11 A-3
Todorov P-31 G-9 A-0
McCann P-28 G-8 A-3
O`Hara P-20 G-2 A-0

This is from BBC website the stats aren`t exactly anything to be excited about.

Most of todorovs goals have come from sub appearances. It`s worth bearing in mind these guys were enough to make us contenders in the championship in the eyes of the 2 previous managers, the board and most pundits.

We`re going to win the league because we barely let in any goals, not because we create buckets of chances. It`s pointless basing anything on the raw stats.

More enlightening would be Wighton or Todorov`s goals vs their xG over the course of the season. I doubt that is a stat which is on tap for Scottish League One though.

McCann, to me, looks like the kind of player who seemed to have all the attributes coming through the age groups, but has not quite developed into the effective striker that everyone expected. He`s here for another year though, so let`s see.

O`Hara has a lot of pace and is a decent one-touch finisher. He`s not a footballer though. He`ll definitely go and may do better some place where his attributes are more suited to the team`s style of play.

Wighton`s strike rate is distorted by the fact that in the early part of the season he was playing out of position on the wing and with an injury (according to the manager). Since he gained full fitness and has been playing through the middle he has averaged around a goal every two games in all competitions I think and has 15 for the season..

2 seasons ago Boyce was top scorer in the Championship with Wighton, Todorov and McManus joint 2nd.

Boyce 14 goals in 25 appearances
Wighton 9 goals in 18 appearances
Todorov 9 goals in 26 appearances
McManus 9 goals in 27 appearances

Worth noting all of our strikers goals are non-penalty goals. 5 league penalties with Bene scoring 4, add that on to Wighton say and he`d have 16 league goals in 30 games. He`s more than good enough to be our main striker next season but we need 2 wingers next to him to stretch the game. Toddy a great option to have and McCann out wide cutting in looks more potent. Happy to keep all three.

Wighton converted a penalty at Montrose recently.

I must say I find the criticism of Wighton weird. In my book he`s the best all-round striker we have and some of his touches to open up the play and bring others into the game are sublime. I hope we can agree terms with him for next season.

Unbelievable stats for this season really. 39 games, 23 goals and 18 assists from midfield in a struggling team. Apparently he has been involved in 77% of his teams goals

Watching Albion Rovers highlights this season (I have a pal who`s a big fan) it`s not just the stats, it`s the quality of many of his goals which mark Reilly out. He has that ability to drift past people (like Mochrie at his best) and find the bottom or top corner when cutting in from the left, and he could have been the answer to our "problem" left-side midfield position.

Another AR player who has caught everyone`s eye since arriving in January is Joe Bevan, an 18 year old they signed from Camelon. Tall, quick, powerful and with an eye for goal, he has coped well with the rugged defending of League Two and looks like he could be a very good player with the right coaching. He has eight goals in fifteen games so far, not bad for a team which is bottom of the league.

Shaun Byrne has been mentioned on here as a target but the piece in the Courier about Charlie Reilly says that Byrne is one of only three Dundee players who is currently under contract for next season. Mind you, he doesn`t seem to be a favourite of Gary Bowyer`s so they may be prepared to release him.

Reilly`s stats have been really impressive this season but would have been better with a year in the championship rather than probably skipping two divisions into the SPL with Dundee. Maybe they`ll loan him out for his own development.

Euan Murray can play right across the back 5. Which would be useful. Think he has been starting each week since Hartlepool changed their manger for the 3rd time this season. That said Hartlepool are almost certainly relegated out of the League altho he still has a year on his contract.

Kane RH and Otoo back next season would be a good bit of business. Tgey are both very talented and would be an asset to the squad. I personally wouldn`t want McMullan back. Fisher yes for sure, as he was called back to his club and he did a real job for us.

McMullan was never our player was he? He was on loan from Celtic and his loan expired. Did we definitely try to sign him? McPake will know him from his time at Dundee so may be interested.

I must say I`m a bit ambivalent about loan players. They can improve the quality of the squad but their clubs can recall them which can upset your plans as happened with Fisher. It could also mean we don`t have a settled squad until well into September if we`re too reliant on them.

But your only paying half their wages so if money is tight, which its is, its a way of improving the size and quality of the squad you wouldnt otherwise be able to do.

I thought the percentage of the loanee`s wage which was payable was negotiable for each deal. Apparently some lending clubs will pay all the wages if the player is guaranteed to get a game.

No player is ever guaranteed to play. But the % can vary a bit if they play or not but thats more highter end loans, dont think it will apply to any of our loans

Certain agreements will include a percentage of games that their player must be involved in. Which is why you might find these players getting a game, even when their form suggests they should take a seat!

Funnily enough, in Italy it`s quite common not only for the parent club to pay all the loan player`s wages, but also for the club who take him to demand a development fee, for giving the player first team experience.

It`s going to be an intriguing summer for transfers, need to replace the loan players (hopefully bring a couple back) and the guys departing who aren`t being offered new deals or who turn them down. Hard to say too much until we know the situation with contracts which will be announced pretty soon after the alloa game you`d think.

I`d take Shaun Byrne back if Dundee are willing to let him leave on the cheap/free since Bowyer doesn`t seem to fancy him, he`d be an upgrade on what we have in midfield imo. KRH is an obvious target but he won`t be short of offers. A new striker (or two if both Todorov/O`Hara leave) and some wide/creative players (KRH/Mahon/Mochrie aren`t certain to be back) would be the priority areas for me.

It`s great to have a bit of optimism back after some really disappointing years from the club`s last stint in the championship, hopefully we can emulate queen`s park and hit a title challenge from the first season but I`d be happy battling for 3rd or 4th and the promotion playoffs.

I liked the look of Marcel Oakley at Queens park. He is a RB loaned form Birmingham until the season end.

Looks like he is a decent defender, with good speed and touch. At 20 years old he might offer competition for Comrie?

It all assumes he would be available for loan again.

Great news about Breen.

We’ve managed to keep pretty much our entire core team, with hopefully Comrie and Mehmet to follow. There has been talk that Comrie already agreed deal but heard pretty much zilch about Mehmet so wondering if he might be away. Be sad if he was and we’d obviously need a new keeper.

Aside from the loan players, that would just leave MacDonald, oHara and Todorov. Wouldn’t complain if they had new deals, but also wouldn’t be upset if they left. Provides a great foundation to add a few new players over the summer, and no doubt a few new loans as well. Would love to see KRH her next year but would be pleasantly surprised if we managed this.

Charlie Reilly is away to Northampton Town (think they have storng Scottish connections) Paul McMullan ffs. He is nominated for POTY in the Championship! Clubs that can offer much more than us will be in for him if he doesn’t want to stay on at Dundee.

The development fee might hold up the Fisher deal. If not, he’ll be a Pars player for sure next season. In any case, I’m fairly confident we’ll see him next season as a Pars player. Euan Murray would also be a brilliant re-signing.

Ruari Paton, KRH, Otoo on loan, Euan Murray, Fisher, keep Mehmet, and keep Todorov as an impact sub. I think those are realistic signings for us.

To my mind, the most important consideration for any player coming into the club is that they fit in with the squad we have and don’t disrupt or diminish the fantastic team spirit that has been in evidence this season. There have clearly been very talented players at Dunfermline in the past who have, for whatever reasons, caused disunity in the dressing room or within the management at the time. That needs to be a avoided at all costs and I’m sure is in the forefront of JMcP’s mind having built the solid unity so obvious to anyone watching this side.

I can`t disagree with any part of your post, usurpar, but unless a manager has worked with a player previously, he is unlikely to be aware of players who are a disruptive influence, unless he has excellent contacts throughout the game. Even then, a player who hasn`t caused any bother at another club, could become troublesome at his new one, because he doesn`t get on with the manager or some other players.

When Stevie Crawford was appointed as the Pars manager, he said at a supporters meeting that he`d never known a squad which contained so many players with such a poor attitude. I`ve always thought that this must have contributed towards Alan Johnston`s eventual sacking - and he was a manager who never signed any player on someone else`s say so, but went and watched them repeatedly before making up his mind.

I`d have thought that anyone who`s had a reasonable career in the Scottish game will know quite a lot of people so could seek opinions if they wanted to.
Maybe Johnston signed certain players despite the advice of those that knew them or didn`t take advice at all thinking he could manage the situation. That wouldn`t surprise me as I could see him being that kind of character.

I’ve signed a pre season contract for the live updates.

At the moment it’s certainly home games - depending on at-home circumstances I’ll have to wait and find out about the away fixtures.

😊

Charlie Adam has been praising the contribution made by the younger players to Dundee`s promotion success and urging the club to keep them all, including Sam Fisher unfortunately. I take it that a good bit of this may be down to the efforts of the James and Dave team when they were there so here`s hoping they can do the same for us if we manage to entice decent young prospects over the next few years.

wouldnt read in to anything Adam says in that piece.

the news on Macdonald going while it isnt a surprise, you can now add wing backs in the areas need to sort out. said a while ago McPake had said they dont want have a big turnover of players every summer, well at the moment you are looking at 8 signings and thats before Mehmet and Comrie`s decisions.

one day after the final game and already the rumours are starting on the likes of pie and bovril, Luke McCowan has an offer according to an Ayr fan. the amount of Dundee players that are out of contract and that McPake signed/managed there, think most of their squad will be a rumour at some point.
Raith fans seem to think Tom Lang is returning and 2 other Raith players will be signing here also.....

He’s scored a couple of goals in league 1, done ok in spells but the opposition is poor. They’ll be no premiership sides chasing him and if we want to sign him I’m sure we could compete with Ayr and Morton

Could the imminent change of manager at Dundee affect Sam Fisher`s availability? I suppose he may feel even more uncertain about his future there and welcome a move. On the other hand the new manager may want to keep him.

I was speaking one of the Directors a couple of weeks ago and they were still to set the budget as they needed to know who was playing in the division next year.

It`s a simple case of bums on seats - had Dundee, Dundee Utd and Falkirk been in the division then there is more of a home crows and therefore a bigger budget.

The reality is that currently only Utd may drop down, but that depends on the final game.

Depending on how the results/play-offs turn out the Championship could look quite weak/open. Would it be worth a gamble of going big in that situation?

Surely for most "smaller" clubs these days, it's a case of "plan for the worst, hope for the best"? I don`t see why we can`t just proceed on that basis?

I see Jack Hamilton has returned to Livingston from his loan at Hartlepool and his contract is up at the end of the month. He did score a few goals for East Fife in League 1 and Arbroath in the Championship but maybe a bit too similar in playing style to McCann for us to be interested.

I highly doubt it. Brexit has made things much more costly and time consuming.

Also, not sure what part of the German market we`d even target. Most salaries here are far higher and can`t imagine football is any different. We`d have to go to tier 4 or lower I reckon unless loans can be made from higher up?
Edit, was in response to German signings on another thread.

I stand corrected GJS93, I must have been looking at the end date for Hamilton`s loan spell with Hartlepool and he is contracted until next May. Judging from JMcP`s Open Goal interview we are quite a way down the road with identifying targets anyway and the next 6 weeks or so should be about seeing if they can be convinced to come here.

With KRH in the bag.

What about Rumarn Burrell who is out of contract at Falkirk?

They have just signed Agyeman so I think Burrell may be out the picture. Falkirk played him as a target man to little effect its not his most affective position. Hes far better breaking from the half way line with blistering pace to get in behind the defence.

I was impressed with him in the first game at EEP, he was a real handful for our defence.

Could he give us another option up front?

Here’s one you might not be aware of that we could try and get and maybe enquire about on loan . Alfie Bavidge the young striker that has just made it onto bench for first team at Aberdeen . Only 17 so still raw but 36 goals for Dons under 18s this season and capped 5 times at Scotland U17 scoring twice. Made 6 appearances off bench for Aberdeen and must have something about him to make that step under Robson . Maybe a season on loan in Championship would beef him up and could help us knock in a few with service from KRH. Could be a gamble but a win/win for Aberdeen and Pars despite young age .

On the subject of Falkirk da no1, I seem to be still getting their emails. They must be desperate for fans since they seem to count everyone who bought a ticket for their away end as a Falkirk fan. But with no intention of gloating, their newsletter indicates that they made an operating loss off £400k last season so it`s a wonder they can make any new signings.

Their board statement yesterday indicated they budgeted for a £400k loss, but are expecting to report a small profit. So I’d be surprised if they emailed to say something different. Also, why not unsubscribe from their emails if you don’t want them?

MacDonald is a solid keeper. Mehmet had a good season but wasn`t really tested, so I would say that MacDonald is an upgrade. I would imagine our business model involves bringing in good young players and developing them and moving them on for a good fee, but we will always need a few experienced players in key positions to help them

The last guy who saw the light along the A92 hasn`t turned out too bad. Would be an extremely good signing

McDonald`s availability is a useful negotiating aid to DAFC in any negotiations they might be having with Mehmet.

If Mehmet hasn’t already signed up with us, then I would bother continuing negotiations. He cares more about getting more money than playing with the club.

He’s replaceable.

I have no idea about the state of negotiations with Memet, if any, but I certainly don`t blame any professional footballer for seeking to get the best possible financial and/or security deal for himself and his family.

After all, when the football club decides a footballer`s services are not needed any longer his contract will not be renewed, no matter how much he wants to keep playing for that club.

I don’t see why there would be. McPake said he has a holiday planned, players also go on holiday. So I don’t know why you’d be expecting a flurry of activity on Thursday? Obviously the manager has said that there’s been a lot of talks ongoing, but I can’t see any reason everyone would suddenly decide to sign on Thursday. Between now and the start of pre-season, I’m sure we’ll announce a few signings. But that’s a few weeks away yet. Certainly no reason to panic, or any need for urgency just now.

I didn`t actually say I was expecting a flurry of activity on Thursday. Checking back, I see it was 6 and 8 June last year when we signed Bene and Hammy.

I would hope we hear about Mehmet by Thursday though. Pre-season can`t be very far away if we`re playing St Pauli on 23 June and the manager seems keen that players take part in it so presumably that includes new signings if possible.

I take it you apply this to your professional life? You always wanted to flip burgers at McDonalds, no amount of money would get you to take a job at Burger King and you would actually take a pay cut to stay with the Golden Arches?

JMcP in the Courier on potential signings -

“There is a gap there but it’s not just a case of everyone who left needs to be replaced with a player.

“We’ve got certain targets in mind and we’ve been working on them. In terms of numbers, we don’t know.

“There are plenty of people here in terms of the recruitment side, the work is ongoing. It doesn’t change if I’m here or not.”

It`s always interesting at this time of year to see which Premiership players are not being offered new contracts by their clubs. Peter Pawlett of Dundee United and David Wotherspoon of St Johnstone are a couple I noticed yesterday.

Both of those players mentioned would be a good addition, if McPake their characters or personalities fit with the current squad.

Jamie Murphy who has left St Johnstone might be worth thinking about for a short term turn if his legs are still up to it (he is 33) depending on who McPake and co. have already got pencilled in for up front.

Pawlett, Murphy and Wotherspoon all fit the bill as wide attackers that I would think we are keen on. Age and injury history against them though. Wotherspoon would definitely be worth a look in pre-season although I’ve heard both Dundee teams interested. McMullan is our number 1 target for this area I believe…..

Hibs aren`t renewing Aiden McGeady`s contract after an injury-ravaged season but I would imagine he`d have admirers in the Premiership if he can convince them he`s fit.

Snodgrass will be no where near this club. He`s almost 36, past his best. McPake is adamant that due diligence is a huge factor in team harmony, it`s our main strength. Why risk it with this guy?

He isn`t. Don`t think he has ever had an issue at any club he has been at, has always been well liked by the fans and left on good terms. Then Naismith happened to be made the Hearts boss, Naismith who has previous of being an absolute bellend.

That was my feeling.

There seems to be a narrative on various forums that this would be a bad signing based on his character - despite there being no real history of being a source of dressing room disharmony, and an actual history of 19 years as a professional, much of it in the Premier League/Championship in England.
