I wonder if this will force us to bring in another striker now with Wighton being ruled out this weekend again? This was always going to be the risk of having a smaller squad. It`s a massive worry if we lose Benedictus for a long period. He brings out the best of the defenders around him and is one of the few vocal players in the team.

Good luck to the gaffer stringing a starting 11 together. It'll certainly be interesting.

Not too fussy about this weekend really as I’d imagine young players will be given a run out.
The only bonus of these injuries is we should finish much stronger in the season if they don’t continue

Owen is currently the manager’s most recent acquisition but he is “hopeful to make another signing by Saturday.”

The manager doesn`t need to be `forced` to bring in a striker. It`s pretty clear he has been trying to sign one since the end of last season.

This makes really grim reading. Fisher, Bene and Breen all out for Saturday then. Unless a loan centre half comes in then probably a change of shape will be required?

Really brings into focus our lack of recruitment in certain positions.

`The manager doesn`t need to be `forced` to bring in a striker. It`s pretty clear he has been trying to sign one since the end of last season.`

It`s even more of a priority and worry now. I`d rather see McCann playing wide and coming in than playing through the middle. He`s far more effective in that position. I`d love to see us do well in the challenge cup (just to experience a cup win for once) but I`d rather we sacrificed this for next week. I really hope we can get someone in the door before Queen`s Park. I`d be happy to see Jakubiak coming in.

Yes, it is odd that this affair stretched out so long. My hunch would be that Wotherspoon might have decided to retire from the game. Of course, I have no evidence to support that.

The optimist in me says if we ever get all our injured players back at the same time, we should have a pretty strong team for this league. However, the pessimist in me says we will likely sustain a fair bit of damage before that happens.

A top-four spot looks like a big task from where we sit today.

Agreed. At the end of the day it was much more important to stay injury free last season to get out of that league than it is this season, as long as we don’t get relegated, which we won’t.

Four games in is a bit early for making predictions surely. Our injury situation will improve and other clubs will have similar problems. I doubt if any club in the Championship could have coped with having 10 absentees.

"We have a good squad"

Do we though? I think we`ve got a good first XI once everyone is fit but a good squad? Even when we are injury free I`d say we lack numbers in some areas, and with the current injury list we don`t have much at all. Shaughan on the Terrace Podcast the other week put it pretty well - he said Dunfermline have a very good League One squad and a decent Championship team but there isn`t much beyond that and they`ll struggle to score goals. When you look at some of the reserves the likes of Dundee Utd, Raith, Partick, even Inverness can call on, I`d say that`s about right. Even some of our better players on paper like Wighton, Ritchie-Hosler, Chalmers and McCann have either been fairly poor or never really been seen at Championship level.

Most folk can`t agree what our best starting XI is which suggests there are a few options available. Wighton and Chalmers have played most of their football at Championship level and KRH has been injured. This is McCann` first real chance at this level but I would say he has improved from last season.

If a team wins a league by 14 points I would say that`s a pretty good indicator that most of them are good enough for a higher level.

I think we are good enough for this league. I don`t think there is a distinct difference between the leagues it`s more of a sliding scale. The league is more competitive, with not much between the teams. The lesson so far is that you need to take your chances. We need to be able to get shots away and on target from the edge of the box or be better at taking half chances or more movement creating space in the box. Perhaps the recent signing is recognition that we need to be more clinical. We are creating chances but wasting them. The Raith game laid our deficiencies bare in that respect.

"If a team wins a league by 14 points I would say that`s a pretty good indicator that most of them are good enough for a higher level."

I`d say it shows the team were better than the other teams in that division. As a crude example, you could be a team of men playing against under 15 teams and win that division comfortably but it means nothing when you get promoted as you start again. Anyone who`s played in a Power League or similar will have experienced that. I played in a league where we were winning by 6 or 7 goals each week but in the league above we were getting hammered by everyone. Also, most teams moving up a level also bring in new players to supplement the players who did well at the lower level, which we`ve obviously struggled to do.

As to the players mentioned, Wighton has scored 2, 3 and 6 league goals at this level and Chalmers was poor for both Ayr and us at this level. Ritchie-Hosler has never played at this level. I`ve not said anything controversial or inaccurate IMO.

Really bad luck, most of our injuries are key players unfortunately, but it is what it is. Today showed what a slim squad we have. As things stand, if we can consolidate in the Championship this year, it’ll be a satisfactory season

I dont get the, "This showed what a slim squad we have" opinion.
We had 9 first team players out for various reasons.
Tell me any team in Scotland that wouldn`t struggle with that.
Should we sign another 9 cover just in case it happens again?

What size of squad should we have? Fans think it`s a simple matter of having two players of similar ability for every position but how feasible is that given the constraints of finance and the fact that there aren`t enough reserve games to keep everyone match fit and motivated? Today we were missing 10 players who would normally be part of our squad. None of them were unproven youngsters. It was no day to assess the strength of our squad.

From what I`ve seen none of our normal squad looks out of place in this league but time will tell and that also applies to the quality of the additions McPake has made. It`s far too early to write them off.

We added 2-3 players from a team that was murder and relegated and strolled league 1.

This league is a totally different kettle of fish. As mentioned we can’t say we have a good championship squad as most of our most influential players last season haven’t played at this level before and certainly not week in week out.

Even some of our more experienced players won’t consistently make an impact in this league…wighton a case in point. O’halleran not looking like a good signing so we look desperately short going forward and totally reliant on untested raw youngsters playing well every week. That’s unrealistic. Can’t see us scoring many this season, the defence will be what decides where we finish.

Things will be looking up……..now yogi is gone!

I think our first 13/14 players are more than good enough to compete at this level?
The problem is when you get a catalogue of injuries to key players, like we have had this season.
Nobody could have foreseen that.

Was it the manager’s choice to go with a relatively small squad or did finances dictate ?
If you listen to any manager up and down the land, they usually want more players in, so I’d maybe suggest the latter ?

We are where we are. Next week will be better for numbers. We have to hang on for the next 6 games. Make ourselves hard to beat and maybe pinch one or two games until we get our key players back. The biggest miss is our captain and organiser. We don’t have anyone to fill his shoes. We were lucky last year that he stayed fit

I remember being pleased when we signed Todorov as he had impressed me when he played for ICT but I never felt he lived up to expectations with us. He did score some vital goals, especially as a sub, but I thought his overall contribution was disappointing, particularly in open play. I don`t think I`ve ever seen Jakubiak play `live` and am looking forward to see what he brings to the team.

I liked Todorov and he can`t be praised highly enough for biding his time on the sidelines. When he was called upon last season he did us a turn.

Still torn whether it was the correct decision to let him go but obviously the manager thought there`s better strikers out there......somewhere!

I liked him, too. A good squad player with a great attitude. He told me he`d love to start every week, but you have to bide your time when the team is playing well and winning most weeks. He said he worked hard in training and did his best when he was asked to play. Should he have been banging on the manager`s door, demanding to play?

I think McPake would like to have kept him, but finances perhaps dictated that some players had to leave before others could come in.

Can`t disagree with DA_NO1 or GG Riva on Todorov. I just don`t think our style played to his strengths. He had a very good eye for goal but lacked pace.
My daughter and I had a wee chat with James McPake before the St Pauli game and he was asking about her favourite players which were Todorov and O`Hara. "Well you must hate me" says James cause I`ve just got rid of both of them!

I never thought either Todorov or O`Hara really got going with us for whatever reason. I did think we would have kept them both for another season but I suspect that our hopes were pinned on MCann and Wighton. JM obviously has his reasons. I hope to be proved wrong but I don`t see O`Halloran as an improvement on either as yet. It`s early in the season so I hope I am proved wrong.

We have had a bit of bad luck with injuries, but we won`t be the only team in this league to be in this position this season. There is a long way to go, so we just need to dig in and stay the course for the next 2 months

Agreed. Adversity can bring a squad of players together if they are of the right character, and if they get a bit of encouragement from results.
