James McPake does not have much to choose from for today`s cup clash with Dundee United at Tannadice. With so many first-teamers injured, suspended or away on international duty, realistically, he has a pool of about 14 to select his lineup.
Whoever he opts for, he surely will prepare a defensive team capable of countering when an opportunity arises. We have to avoid a shellacking at all costs.
As in recent games, he may retain a three-at-the-back format with Comrie and Edwards providing the width. Would Hamilton be able to command that back line like Bene? Hmmm. O`Halloran as AM and Chalmers as DM might give some solidity to the central midfield, but neither fills me with confidence. And one has to hope that Moffat and McCann can cause some nuisance in support of Jakubiak up front. That format could look something like this...
Little
Hamilton Otoo Fenton
Comrie O`Halloran Chalmers Edwards
Moffat McCann
Jakubiak
Alternatively, McPake might opt for 442 or the 4132 variant. Perhaps we could go with...
Little
Comrie Otoo Fenton Edwards
Hamilton
Moffat Chalmers O`Halloran
Jakubiak McCann
The second option looks more promising to me, but there`s a danger with that shape that they could be overwhelmed by United in midfield.
It is on days like this that football managers earn their money. What do you think?

Hamilton will be defence instead of Fenton, with Paul Allan In midfield. The rest is anyone’s guess probably depending on if Jakubiak’s able to Start

Think Utd are expected to put out a young team and possibly one of their comedy goalkeepers but the comment in the free programme on their official website shows you how much McPake lives rent-free in their heads, so they might want to put a slightly stronger team out than normal...

Let`s not mess about here Oz - I did not say I was celebrating. I said I hoped we would lose and that I was relieved when Utd scored their third. That is not the same thing.
Ultimately I want what is in the best interests of our club. In this case, fewer games in a meaningless competition that would put in jeopardy the fitness of our already threadbare squad.
This is nothing more than a pragmatic attitude on my part. I want us to succeed in the competitions that actually mean something.

I went – nearly turned back, but the fact I’d bought my ticket meant I kept going. I don’t know what it is about games at Tannadice but they always seem to coincide with inexplicable delays on the Queensferry Crossing which coupled with the new parking restrictions meant I only got there with a minute to spare after a frantic chase up the M90/A90.
“Disjointed and wide-open at the back” sums it up well.
A lot of changes, and a lot of inexperience made the first bit inevitable, and we didn’t really have a centre-back on the park (which considering two seasons ago we had 11 or so players who could have played there) was remarkable. Had Bene been playing then I don’t think they would have scored the goals they did.
Otoo should maybe have stopped the cross for the first one, but Moult getting a header 6 yards out must have been an error – perhaps the keeper should have come?
The second seemed to be similar – ironically Comrie who has had several chances at the other end this season and never struck one cleanly absolutely leathered it home, and almost everyone seemed to watch as Glass had all the time in the world for the third.
At 3-0 it should have been game over, and United cruised the second half, although we did cause some problems when McCann and Edwards came on
Fenton was a bit unlucky hitting the post, but should Tod have followed up better? Edwards crashed one across the face of goal, McCann didn’t get enough on the ball from a cross from the left (you felt Moult would have finished) and Comrie put one over the bar from the edge of the box.
I expected more from Moffat who was pretty anonymous – he had a half-decent hit late on but seemed to cramp up in both legs – and O’Halloran got a lot of the ball as RWB but didn’t do much. Sutherland and Tod had one or two moments of quick interplay that suggest they’ve played together a lot, but didn’t get much change out of their opponents. McLeod didn’t look overawed when he came but the game was long gone.
Overall, I’m not sure we learned anything that we didn’t know before – whilst Hamilton Otoo and even Comrie can do a job, we need a proper CB; and we need a goalscorer. Maybe it’s a sign of age, but in years gone by I seem to remember there used to be lots of players whose main (if not only) attribute was the ability to be in the right place at the right time and score goals. This was true at all levels, but they don’t seem to be as abundant now – I’ve seen a few lower league games this season and the strikers have been relatively poor. Anyone agree or have an opinion why this might be?
I like the competition – it should give us the chance to play different teams and to blood new players. On this occasion it may have served the purpose of allowing injured players to get a week closer to recovery, rather than drop 3 league points.

There`s been a bit of a debate going on about the general dearth of strikers because it applies to the national team too. I read one piece where Malky Mackay said he saw it coming and said so when he was at the SFA. He saw it as inevitable as the vogue changed to playing one up front and that player had to be more than just a goalscorer.

3-0 was a bit harsh, there was enough of an improvement in our play second half to merit a goal, but when there was some quality dribbling or quick combinations it ended with a poor cross/shot.
It was useful for some of the younger players to get some first team minutes, Tod showed some flashes of quality but there were not many standouts. I don`t remember Little making any notable saves, he might have done better with Glass` shot which was quite central. Not many of the senior players impressed either, Allan was largely anonymous and was a pretty lightweight combination with Chalmers, O`Halloran was dreadful first half but at least attacked the full back a few times in the second...doesn`t look like he can dribble, cross or shoot though :(
Moffat just had cramp, so should be available for next week. McPake`s interview was largely about the injuries, mentioned 5 back for next week assuming no more problems! Sharp, Fisher, Summers, Jakubiak & Wighton. McCann and Edwards will obviously both be back in the starting XI as well.

Always disappointed if we lose. Positives about the young boys though, with Moffat and O’Halloran getting fitter, and although any cup can potentially provide much needed cash, a week with so many injuries away from a league game must be prudent from McPake.
Looking forward to seeing the new boy up front and others coming back from being injured/rested as a precaution.

Was depressing listening to Sportsound with Dundee Utd get praised to the hilt and a mention of our injury problems and playing 17yr olds.
They mentioned that Tod had goggles on, maybe to protect a previous injury, unaware he uses them all the time!
Very critical of how we played, probably correct of us playing a back 3 first half and changing to back 4 second half.
Not too bad a score considering Utd line up and our problems, gave the young boys some experience, a nothing trophy, forget it and move on!

This. Due to their lack of preparation they probably thought that was our first team. And considering our excellent record the last 12 months, on paper at least, it looks like a great result for them. We will pump them at East End when we have our proper team out in the league.

What lack of preparation ?
I`m sure he`s talking about bbc sxotland`s lack of preparation regarding our selection problems and Tod`s need for his safety glasses/goggles .
Must admit , I thought they might have been a little bit less disparaging of our performance , considering the number of absentees we had yesterday .

From the highlights, realistically the game was over at half time. Dundee Utd got their goals from being a bit more direct and turning our defence. Something I feel we have not been so much of this season. BBC stats stated we had no shots on target. We need to be hitting the target more and work the keeper. I agree with what others have said before. We need to introduce a bit of variety, and lift the pace of the game in the last 1/3rd of the pitch. It changes the way the opposition think which is just as important as how we perform.

What lack of preparation ?
I`m assuming he means the lack of preparation by the commentary team
Thanks - I read it as Dundee United’s lack of preparation. Couldn’t make the connection.

Nope, meant commentary. No idea on how we prepare for games. Assuming well considering our long term form. But their preparation (the commentary) was non-existent.
Do you think I'm the man?
A) Yes, B) A or C) B

It’s an every match occurrence to be asked questions / confirm queries on players etc and we’re happy to assist pundits.
But a wee bit homework on their part would work wonders.
ETA last weekend the local Inverness journo next to me happily asked if Tod was the pars equivalent of Edgar Davids 😂

I had a listen to the match on BBC Scotland, and I thought they were quite fair to us, mentioning the injury issues and having to use some young players a few times.
There was a strange moment when they went to big Tyrone reporting on the Cove v Montrose match, and he mentioned something or other that had been done by "Dunfermline`s Aiden Quinn". I was thinking he was maybe on loan from us, but he must`ve just got confused as to what teams he was watching
