This has always been the case for games not in the top flight, other than those on tv. There’s no fourth official to hold up the board.

You`re imagining it I think. Who would give him the info? I think the ref today got it about right with 5 minutes added.

It would only have been announced when we were in the top flight, or the game was on tv, and there was a fourth official to display the added time on the board. The referee wouldn’t be communicating the added time to the announcer at the end of each half.

It happens randomly in the cup games when there`s a 4th official present...

Failure to inform the crowd about how much longer there is to be played is just a further indication that those in charge of the game care very little about the fans who have actually paid to watch the game.
Saturday at Hampden was a prime example - with two huge electronic scoreboards it would have been a relatively simple matter to display the referee`s decision on how many extra minutes were to be played, and to allow the clock to continue showing the time played.

And who does the referee communicate that to? He can only communicate to other match officials.

Football has just got stupid in this regard. Referee shouts to someone at the side of the pitch and they put up a wee board. What is so hard about that

"the fourth official has indicated that there will be an additional four minutes of time to be played"
Was that the announcement? Something like that seems to ring a bell.
Stanza is right though. I noticed that there was a stadium clock at Tannadice and at Hampden and they both stopped on the 45 or 90 minute mark as appropriate.
Is stoppage time always an integral number of minutes? It seems that if you are expecting 4 minutes say and the ref doesn`t blow at that point then you`ve often got another minute at least of agony to endure.
And how often does the ref blow in the middle of an attack? Does (s)he usually whistle for time when the ball is safely out of the park, or in mid-air following a goal kick?

All stadium clocks do that. It`s meant to stop unrest if, for example, the referee adds on 3 minutes and the whistle hasn`t blown by 93:01. Of course, it`s minimum time added, as yet more time can be added during that period. We only get informed if there`s a 4th official so in our case only for live TV games.
