Roy Barry- 1968 cup final chat
Topic Originator: EastEndTales

Finally... Episode 12 of East End Tales is now available to listen.

Roy Barry joins the podcast and chats about the 1968 Cup final, along with some mentions of beating the Lisbon Lions in the 3rd Round, European adventures and who is his favourite player currently?

Me and my co host review everything since we last recorded and we`ve got a new feature! But no name for it. What can we name our new episodic quiz?

Can also check the archive for our chats with the likes of Jack de Gier, Callum Morris, Andy Smith and many more.

Enjoy! Link below, or find us on Spotify, Amazon Music, Google podcasts or anywhere you listen.

The disappointment of not seeing the team parade the Scottish Cup after the presentation then the mad dash back to Dunfermline to the City Chambers, will never forget that experience.

I was standing with a group of boys near the halfway line that day, very close to the front. Watching the film now confirms my feeling at the time that Hampden looked pretty full. They said the crowd was 56,000, but it felt bigger than that.

Maybe because most of us were standing on the terrace, it gave a false impression. I went to Hampden a year or two later for a Scotland game against West Germany, where the official crowd was double, about 110,000. It felt much more densely packed.

Emptying the bus of all the rubbish (cans, bottles etc) at the "rhubarb patch" in Glasgow prior to arrival at Hampden, only to find we had also dumped the remaining carry out🤬🤬🤬

We went back after the game and low and behold it was still there!🍺🍺🍺👍

Also seem to remember a celebration with Aberdeen?? supporters, did they not defeat one of the ugly sisters the same day in a league match?🤔

Aberdeen beat Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox that same afternoon - effectively handing Celtic the title.

RFC only league defeat that season if memory serves.

Only the SFA and Scottish League could conspire to allow the showpiece Cup Final to be played same time as last league game of the season.

Mind you, they had previous on that nonsense - season 1964/65 as Hearts (and Roy Barry) will wish to forget.

How would that have helped them ?

Ooops, apologies - well spotted, Rangers did lose by that result - somewhere in my depleted memory bank I thought it was 0-2.

Not that the precise score is relevant - Celtic had the midweek game in hand (ironically at EEP) with a much superior goal difference. We would have had to win by double figures (13 goals ?) to deprive them of the title.
