Match thread - Pars 3-1 Morton
Topic Originator: OzPar
Date:   Sat 23 Sep 11:55

Well, yippee, it’s Saturday again, and here we are with the Pars back at East End to face Morton, who have struggled a bit this season.

I don’t think there have been any returns from long-term injury yet, so we will probably have a squad much the same as last week to draw on. That said, I think I read somewhere that young Tod and Allan might be back into contention, but I would be surprised if James McPake will be looking to change things around too much after last week’s triumph at Hampden.

All will be revealed at 2 p.m. when the team sheet is usually published.

With a bit of good fortune, we could be in the top 4 by the time 5 o’clock comes around, but Morton have a horrible habit of spoiling our plans.

COYP!

There was a video on Scottish football away days of the send off they gave this young lad outside EEP. What a fantastic send off it was, kudos to all involved.

It looks like the same starting lineup as last week, but the subs bench looks light: Allan is back, but no McLeod, Hoggan, and Tod.

About the best we`ve played for a while. McCann playing like a man full of confidence and got his goal from a really lovely move. First goal was a shocking goal to lose from a defensive point of view but a nice cross and a wee bit of movement from Wighton to get the space. Morton having been terrible coming into it just before half time, would be handy keeping them out and not giving them any momentum.

HT 2-0. Excellent half from the Pars. Very few complaints. It was a bit untidy defensively for 5 minutes before the break, but otherwise, it was a near-perfect half.

Pars played a high press early, which caused Morton a lot of discomfort, and both our goals were fantastic team goals. McCann and Wighton are combining well, and the team is confidently passing the ball around.

Morton have a history of coming back to win against us from two behind, so there is no room for complacency. From here on, it is about game management, timely substitutions, and careful defending. If we continue to play like we have, we should win this. COYP!

My first game since the awful 2-2 draw with Peterhead almost a year ago. Who knew then that James McPake would build such a good team by now. This was an excellent performance from start to finish, albeit a few alarms before and after the Morton goal.

Absolutely wonderful to watch the team knock the ball about so nicely on our beautiful pitch.

I`m no expert but if Sam Fisher, Josh Edwards and Ewan Otoo don`t end up playing at a higher level, I`ll be shocked. If we get transfer fees at the same time, that will more than vindicate the club policy.

Morton are a bit of a bogey team for the Pars but they were cut open many times with our free-flowing football.

A word of praise for Joe Chalmers, Craig Wighton and Michael O`Halloran, who have all had more than their fair share of criticism on this forum. They were all outstanding, along with the consistent Aaron Comrie and Chris Hamilton.

Lewis McCann has improved out of all recognition. Yes, he misses a few but that rocket against the underside of the bar will stay with me!

To think we`re still missing Kane and Matty. James is going to have some lovely problems when they`re available.

I`ve left Ben Summers and Owen Moffat till last. Sadly, these two little guys are too good to believe they could end up as permanent signings. But we can dream.

Well done, Pars. On this evidence, we should be aiming for the top four.

Credit to the management team for the players they have been able to bring in. Good to see OHalloran getting back up to speed. We have been threatening that performance for a while so good to see things coming together. You reap what you sow at the end of the day so irrespective of bad luck that we have had we are capable of putting out a different team who can perform equally well. Great to see.

Sit down 😂 missed his chance due to lack of game time and played a a great ball for MOHs goal….looks a handful and useful other option and wont even be match fit yet!

Big shout outs for Summers, MOH, Wighton and McCann today - excluding Ben the other 3 have silenced some doubters with their showings today! MOH looks very dangerous now hes getting sharper and fitter!

I really enjoyed that. Some of the insightful passing was a joy. McCann and Wighton really starting to click. Summers starting to run with the ball in front of him with his head up. He is a future national prospect if he keeps up this progress. Season ticket is really starting to be value for money already.

Superb performance and it gives you so much belief for the season ahead, especially with a lot of key players to come back from injury. You wonder how players like Matty Todd will get back in the team with Ben Summers looking outstanding playing in Todd`s position! It will be a good headache for McPake to have when the time comes. Even though they were beaten 3-0, next week at Firhill will be an extremely tough test. I think we will need to cut out mistakes at the back, as Morton did give us a few scares, but we looked extremely dangerous going forward today! As much as Morton could have scored 2/3 we could have scored 6!

Only real negative about today is the dreadful remixes we are trying to bring in to the Gregor Abel song and goal song today. Get them in the bin! It reminded me of the Sunderland documentary! Sometimes it`s best just to keep the classics. Usually the chorus of the Gregor Abel song is sung around the stadium before kick off but this new version destroys it!

The first game that I saw at EEP was against Morton in 1968. We won 4-0, Bertie Paton scored a hatrick. The reason for this post was that crowd was deemed to be 6000 and that was year we won the cup and finished 4th in the league. Yesterday the crowd was just under 5500 and we are in a lower league. Hopefully our crowd will keep improving and we will gain promotion. I would love to see us become a top 6 team once again.

We were really good in spells and yet at 2-1 you still thought we could drop a couple of points. Maybe 4 times a defender threw himself in front of the ball to block a net bound shot, which shows good team spirit, but is a little alarming for the spectator. Again we spurned some good chances, but O’Halloran showed nice composure for his goal. He seems to up to speed now – presumably having got match fit and used to the system.

McCann was very unlucky with the shot off the crossbar but should really have done better with that sweeping counterattack when played in by Wighton. I think that would have made it 3-0 which should have been game over.

Fisher was my MotM – I’m not sure Bene necessarily gets back in this side when he’s fit – he may have to wait for his chance. Ditto KRH.

Interesting to see Summers and Moffat play together. I’m not sure you could start them both. At least I can tell them apart now. Summers is more gingery, wears his socks fully pulled up and is quite jinky. Moffat is blonder, wears his socks round his ankles, and is even jinkier.

I guess some of the young lads were playing on the Friday night so weren’t needed for the bench.

Wasn`t at the game but some of the interplay is excellent in the highlights. Looks like it could easily have been 5 or 6.

Without wanting to dampen the positivity too much, we`ve played 2 of the bottom 4 in the last fortnight so next week will be a better guage of where we are - facing Partick away from home who are just a point behind us.

Queen`s Park were above us before we played them. League positions don`t mean too much at this stage of the season.

We have also played the top two and were unfortunate to only get 1 point form those games. We have a good defensive structure and players that are fit and highly committed, we won`t concede many goals. We also have some really talented, quick forwards, so when we click, if we are clinical, we should be scoring as well. Pretty much everything you could ask for as a fan, a team that also includes some local boys who love the club. We will be very competitive against anyone in this division.

Great pressing and winning the ball from the front 3 almost resulted in 2 goals early in the game. From 1.30 in the highlights, Summers presses and forces the defender to get rid of the ball and try to pick out a team mate. Wighton anticipates the pass and nips in ahead of the defender and puts a great ball to feet for Chalmers in the penalty box. That is followed in the highlights with McCann presses and robbing the defender and playing the ball to Wighton who back heels it into his path when he hit the crossbar.
