 Spectators who aren`t fans

So last twice at EEP, I`ve sat next to someone who isn`t local or a fan of the club.

The first chap was there with his son, from Greenock. Their ambition was to visit as many Scottish grounds as possible, experiencing the atmosphere as a home supporter.

The second this weekend, was a guy from Colchester. His friend is a pars fan and he took the opportunity to come to Scotland to catch a few different games Rangers v Real Betis, us v Morton and then slipped away sharpish to catch Kelty v Falkirk. I got the impression that EEP was the one he wanted to see and the others more co-incidental. A West Ham fan, he seemed to enjoy our performance on Saturday. We got talking at HT when he was curious about the NW display.

Really an observation, but I`ve been surprised that someone not local would travel to come to watch us (discounting any you tube creators).

There was a `Geordie` couple behind us on Saturday. As far as I could gather they were on holiday in the area and were Newcastle fans who fancied seeing another team that played in black and white. I must say some of his comments had me biting my tongue but they seemed to enjoy the experience. I think they were going to watch the Sheffield United-Newcastle match on the telly so he would be a happy boy yesterday.

I’ve spoken to a few neutral fans of late too. I think it’s smashing they want to come to EEP and should be encouraged. I’d genuinely love to be one of the visit-every-stadium fans!

What prompted the tongue biting eck?

A bit of haggis bashing?

What surprises me (not in a bad way, I hasten to add) is the large number of English accents in and around Dunfermline. My discreet enquiry leads me to believe that the vast majority are resident in Fife. Maybe not too surprising since Fife is a great place to live. While I`m very much a Scot, if it`s infiltration by stealth, I`m all for it. (If you know what I mean !!!! ???)

You`re the only one around here who indulges in haggis bashing. All the annoying comments were football-related.

I guess there’s a few like me. Sent to Rosyth by the Royal Navy in the 80’s and 90’s and then chose to leave the Service and stay here when the Naval Base closed. Always a ‘support the local team’ chap as I traveled round the UK so have supported Pompey and the Argyle. Very happy to have been a Pars ST holder since 95.

This sounds like my sons approach to football. He wants to visit as many grounds as he can. He flew to Cyprus on the day of Scotland`s recent game and spent the night at the airport before flying back to Luton on the Saturday morning to drive to Sheffield to watch Sheffield FC who apparently are the oldest football club in the world still in existence. They were playing Spalding in the FA cup preliminaries.
He was born in Bolton but has not been to Blackburn Rovers ground so he drove there from Sheffield and went to see Blackburn women play on the Sunday then on to stay with a friend in Carlisle before Hampden for Scotland v England. Then back to Carlisle.
He is a staunch Cambridge United fan and they were playing Wigan on the Saturday so he met his Camridge mates there before driving home to Suffolk.

Quite a week I think you would agree

He now has his ticket for Spain v Scotland but is flying to Lisbon to take in a match involving FC Lisbon before the Scotland game.

I tend to find folk from Edinburgh have Edinburgh accents. Which English accent in particular do you hear so much from Edinburgers?

The season we were relegated a guy from Belgium and his son sat next to me. He was visiting Edinburgh but wanted to watch the team Jack De Geir played for.
He left mightily disappointed.

Good on ye PeterHu50. It`s been a rocky road, at times, following the Pars but brilliant all the same.

" I’d genuinely love to be one of the visit-every-stadium fans!"

Ground-hopping is indeed a fantastic experience. 13 games in 9 days in Buenos Aires earlier this year was a brilliant if not tiring time. Should have been 14 but couldnt get a taxi quickly enough outside Boca to get out to a 2nd game that night

Suspect that`s a fishing attempt. I`ve been in Duloch for years and the vast majority are from Dunfermline or wider Fife. Most Edinburgers head for East Lothian if they`re posh or West Lothian if they`re...not posh.

Yes, West Lothian is definitely not for the posh……..I was taken there as a six month old against my will 54 years ago……..from our posh gaff in Park Neuk……..

There’s loads of English accents in Edinburgh… and as a result, there’s a fair few in places like dalgety bay as well

I haven`t been to Scotland for quite a while, but I did notice the number of English accents in Edinburgh. Mind you, it was around the festival time. However, it is most noticeable in the Highlands, where you`ll struggle to hear a Heiland voice in some places.

Here in Oz, I have ground-hopped most of the major stadiums over the years I have been here, but rarely are there away fans, owing to the vast distances between cities.

As a result, the atmosphere generally tends to be very one-sided and "family-friendly". In truth, a Pars-Falkirk game is much more enjoyable.
