Looks like a back 3 with Edwards & KRH as wingbacks, Moffat or possibly Matty Todd behind the striker?

"Moffat or possibly Matty Todd behind the striker?"

Moffat is playing almost as the furthest forward player so far! We`re moving the ball a touch quicker tonight but there isn`t much movement in forward areas. Arbroath trying to wait until we get the ball into the midfield then pressing with two or three very quickly to put Todd, Allan and Chalmers under immediate pressure.

Exactly what I was thinking, it’s like a friendly/training game.

You would have thought after Friday we would have had a boot up the bottom but it’s equally as bad.

Soooo sllloooowww. Zero movement. No intensity. Ritchie-Hosler hasn`t beat his man once and looks short of confidence. We`ve had two shots from distance - one a virtual passback and one that at least forced a save of sorts - but look like we`re going to struggle to score again tonight.

As usual we are far too slow going forward !
Still going sideways or backwards
Mind you it would help if we could pass a ball to our own players
Not very exciting to watch just now ,

Another 45 minutes pass us by. Boring. Too many players too scared to try something. The 3 at the back isn't working.

Side to side, tippy tappy at the back and then try an over the head pass down the wing. Rinse and repeat. This is truly awful football. We look totally devoid of any creativity and drive. Hard to watch.

Deary me.

Team low in confidence and still don’t look like we have much of a bite about us up front. Don’t think any of the other striking options will change that either tbh. Too many seasons I have seen us play like this in this league. Just dreadful, eye-bleeding stuff.

We could have been ahead - had four efforts on goal. A good dribble into the box by Lewis ended in a weak shot easily saved. Then a decent shot from Moffat, just too near the keeper. A good header by Fisher just cleared the bar from a corner, and a McCann header went wide. So we`ve come a lot closer to scoring than they have but we`re looking a bit sleepy and I worry that they might get a break and one goal could settle it.

I`m not anti-Joe, but I think he`s not what we need - he slows it down too much. But we don`t seem to have a pattern like we have had sometimes, it`s not getting to our players that can take it forward, often enough. I think KRH has improved since he came back. He is taking men on and making some ground. Fisher, Hamilton and Otoo look good at the back. Some of Otoo`s passes going astray when he comes forward. In fact, the percentage of our passes that go to an Arbroath man is way too high.

McCann got into the game more as it went on, but Matty`s not getting the ball much. Can`t see how we can improve it from the bench - Wighton`s got no current form. Jakubiak maybe the liveliest option but I`d just as soon stick wi` Matty and Moffat. Tell McCann to get in the box more. And tell the others they`ve to feed him there. And encourage Moffat to shoot from 20 yards. And Josh to get flyin` doon the wing more.

Decent finish from a narrow angle and tough on Gaston who had made a good save from the initial shot. Thought Todd dived trying to win a penalty in the build up but fair play to Moffat and Edwards to being alive to the situation with Arbroath defence sleeping.

Looks like Ritchie-Hosler took a sore one there, that`s all he needs after making a positive contribution for the goal. Stretcher ambling on now, hopefully it`s just an impact injury and nothing too serious.

Hopefully that Goal will settle us down
And Arbroath open up a bit trying to get forward and give us that little bit more space , certainly looks like we are trying to play a higher line too
On the Bad side of things Doesn`t look good for KRH looks like he has done his shoulder in ( you canny make it up for the poor laddie just now with injuries ) I wish him well and a speedy recovery

Moffat walked off unaided, not sure if it was cramp or something (he often only play 60 odd minutes anyway) but Fisher looked to be struggling going down the touchline.

Playing a bit better as you`d expect with the goal cushion but still woeful in front of goal.

"Well this is awkward…"

Not sure how - we had three good chances that weren`t taken (Wighton managing to hit it out for a throw, then two weak-ass shots that the keeper could have thrown his gloves on top of to save) when I posted and even then the second goal was another weak header that the keeper basically pushed onto Wighton - who knew nothing about it - before trickling over the line. Hardly fantastic finishing. We`ve now scored a third which was basically a slide tackle from Wighton after the keeper made a decent block on McCann`s shot. Like it or not, we`ve been wasteful in front of goal again tonight despite playing better this half, and we won`t have goalkeepers gifting us crucial goals every week. I`m happy with the win and the performance in the second half but if you`re happy with the quality of finishing on show tonight then fair enough, you`re easier to please than I am!

The three points were the important thing tonight
Yes we won`t get many keepers giving us gifts , but on the other hand we have been crying when our own keepers have been sloppy and giving gifts of goals , so I am happy to see us getting our turn tonight
I do not think anyone is under the illusion it was quality finishing
But you have to be in the right place to put it in !
And let`s hope the win gives us the Confidence boost we have been needing

Yep, confidence is a massive part of the game and it’s been a wee bit lacking lately. Hopefully this result will inspire a bit more. Just a shame that Lewis didn’t get on the scoresheet to nullify the penalty miss against the wee team.

Very solid at the back. And we were very comfortable 2nd half. Arbroath didn`t look like up to Championship standard. Just great to see that we were able to keep it together after 3 forced subs.

The worst team I`ve seen show up to East End in a long time but the main thing is we won comfortably with a clean sheet. Hopefully this will give the players a bit more belief. We played like a team that was well low in confidence in the first half but the second was an improvement. I hope the three injuries aren’t serious. Hosler and Fisher’s looked bad and we seriously can’t afford to lose any more defenders. Hopefully we can get another 3 points on Saturday.

Pedestrian first half but stepped it up second half. Reminded me so much of last season

Hosler has dislocated his shoulder. Hopefully won’t require an operation ?

Fisher looked like he’s done ankle ligaments

Moffat, some kind of groin strain, maybe?

McKenna from Arbroath has probably done a cruciate.

I thought ref was excellent tonight. Fair play for blowing early and not risking another injury

After that first half, for whatever reason, it was good to see the shackles come off and just go at them. Could`ve been 5 or 6 by the end.

Christ knows what defence will play this weekend but surely have to be 4?

There has to be signings this window. Cannot go on like this

Surely we can bring in an emergency loan for defence? It’s getting incredibly desperate now.

Well done to the players and staff on the 3-0 win, it wasn`t pretty but that win puts us 4th and further away from the bottom which is all that matters. Arbroath were awful but you can only beat what`s in front of you, a couple of seasons ago we would have lost that match.

The injuries are concerning, January can`t come round soon enough, really hope the club is on top of recruitment as we are just having one of those seasons.

It was almost like we have so few defenders let`s just go after them and not give them a sniff.

We then played with a lot more aggression going forward and for me that was enjoyable.

Delighted Wighton scored and I`m not bothered how they went in.

We have a problem though in defence would love to know the story with the Kenyan boy is it a lack of a permit causing the delay or just nae money

Don’t think there is such a thing as an emergency loan for an outfield player.

"What a load of absolute nonsense."

So you`re happy with the quality of our finishing? Fair enough (as I`ve already said). People are allowed other opinions - just because you disagree (and are wrong! ;) ) doesn`t make other opinions "nonsense".

"Take a break and enjoy mate."

Already said I was happy with the win and the second half performance. What an odd comment. Hopefully the manager and squad won`t share your thoughts and will use training to reflect, improve and grow.

"Surely we can bring in an emergency loan for defence? It’s getting incredibly desperate now."

Nope, we have to p*** with the c*ck we have. We might be able to recall Sam Young from East Stirlingshire, but it would depend on the terms of the agreement I`d guess.

Have to be pleased with contribution of the subs when they came on , Jakubiak in particular did a lot of positive work on the ball and I’Halloran looked confident on the ball and was always looking for it, pleased for Wighton who could have had a hat- trick. McCann looked so much more threatening out wide than down the middle. The back three did well.

Good win and we played much better in the second half. It really was like many of last season`s games. It was a worry having to make all our substitutions early in the second half but I think we were better after the changes. Hard to say if it was that, getting a lift from scoring or just a change of approach from the manager but we played well after getting the first goal.

Not much you can say about the first half - we had most of the ball but went with slow, shitey passing with no aggression again and didn`t really threaten. Neither defence was in any danger at all.

Much better second half, and Lewis McCann in particular is so much better when the team are allowed to play more aggressively. Once again, the team was better when more aggressive, better when more direct. I`m not sure if the subs contributed to us being more direct but it certainly worked well.

Arbroath were as bad as any opposition this season, but quite happy to see that tonight. I really expected them to come into the game at 1-0 but it never happened and the only danger was from us giving the ball away under pressure. Even then, we coped with it pretty well. We did well to use the space they left in behind later in the game. Our finishing was pretty poor but the win was all that really mattered and it was comfortable. Hopefully it lifts us after a sticky spell and that we can start winning the odd game where we have few chances from here on.

Picking up on the last post from Raymie, maybe there hasn’t been enough pressure applied from signed players to force themselves into the starting line up. Tonight they got their chance and it seems that two of them have made a good case for future inclusion.

We have an obvious problem with scoring goals but a free scoring striker is hardly likely to land on our doorstep in January. The more realistic solution is to get the team geared more offensively, as Socks noted earlier, and for scoring opportunities to be created around the team as a whole.

Once Bene returns I am sure we will be in little danger of relegation; the next step is to become more threatening when we have the ball and that might include playing more directly, even when inside our own half.

That is just how I saw it too. O’Halloran I think also deserves a special mention for his work rate and desire to drive us forward. Bad day for injuries though and was one of those proverbial games of two halves. First half tempo was so slow it was, as one poster said, like watching a friendly or us playing a couple of years ago. The manager must have read the riot act at half time. We could have scored 5 or 6 in the second half. Looks like Arbroath are in a bit of trouble.

That game reminded me of last season and to be fair Arbroath look like they will finish bottom this season, they were poor all over the park. They are a league 1 side who came for a 0-0 and even at 1-0 we’re still playing for a 0-0!

For me McCann has to play on the wing, he lad is just not a striker. Great workrate but it’s to a fault where he’s so knacked in invariably picks the wrong option or the shot is weak. 2-3 chances today and the efforts were poor. On the wing he wouldn’t have to run about quite so much so could be more effective. Really needs to improve his first touch.

Wighton needs to play, both his goals were from gambling and following up chances, no one else at the club does that. Jak had his best game but still looks ropey, runs into trouble and relying on the break of the ball more than skill to retain possession, then inevitably overdoes it and loses possession.

Good to see Todd back and starting to show some glimpses. KRH was subdued even before he went off but just needs games, another injury won’t help that.

Allan and chalmers were better but again it was a team who sat in so they had time on the ball, chalmers always guilty of head down play it back or sideways even when in space and Allan got about the pitch.

So a good day at the office in the end as much down to the opposition as our good play but we’ll take it. Think we’ll have to play a back 4 on sat as we don’t have any defenders.

I thought like others the first half was like a training session. Lots of possession but again little punch.

The early goal 2nd half helped and I thought the substitutions gave us better balance and more purpose up front. I thought both Jakubiak, O`Halloran, and Wighton all played well when they came on, and this freed up McCann to play a more direct role where he was more effective.

I think Arbroath were poor and came for a point. They sat in their own half for most of the first half and had nothing to come back at us after we scored.

It helped us with Fisher getting injured being forced to be Jakubiak on for him

We should of started the game like that, back 4, wide players and strikers in the box. We would of destroyed them from the get go but he choose to play 5 at back vs that lot. They were happy for our defence to knock it around first half.

It was the same defensive formation when Fisher went off. Comrie dropped into right centre back and O`Halloran into wing back.

I watched his video on Instagram, quite inspiring.
On last night, that victory takes us into the play-off spots, quite an achievement when we haven`t had a chance to play our best starting eleven on a regular basis and after last night that will continue unfortunately.

Agree OzPar. Strange how he (and I, to a lesser extent) get criticised for stating the obvious when like the likes of Socks and Raymie can say similar and not get the same reaction. A lot of playing the man, not the ball I think.

On next week, I think it`ll be the same back theee/five that finished the game last night unless a) the trialist guy can get a work permit and sign in time or b) the pitch is frozen solid. To be fair, Comrie/Hamilton/Otoo isn`t a complete disaster as a back three (I think they played together in the last 20 minutes at Stark`s Park and were mostly fine?) but it does mean that we are out of options if anyone gets injured or we need to change shape again. You`d imagine Queens Park will put them under more pressure than an abject Arbroath side did too.

I think teams just know to put Chalmers under pressure. I vaguely remember at one stage last season he had some stat like `the most key passes` in the league? Most teams seem to have tried to do something about it this season.

He was excellent in the first half against Dundee Utd who didn`t close him. They were possibly too confident in their own game to think about the opposition...

I like Craig Chalmers and Aaron Comrie. The generally perform at a consistent level. You need those players in the team. I think Chalmers would play fewer sideways passes if there was more movement upfront. I think he tries to be efficient with the ball. When Wighton, Jakubiak and OHalloran came on there was greater movement off the ball and more forward passing options that I thought he played when the opportunity arose.

^^^ correct.

it was always a risk to try and go until January without that extra defender, i dont think the injuries last night will change anything though in terms of looking at free agents of which there are still a few out there both UK or foreign based, so it will be get on with what we have plus probably ask Fenton to play on the right if need be or throw McLeod in there which he did in the reserves a few times last season.

Second half was much better last night IMHO because there were a lot of balls over the top which McCann for example were timing runs well and getting in behind them.
That and I thought Arbroath tired.
Really hope all 3 lads` injuries aren`t as bad as they looked.
The subs did well. I think we are now seeing what MOH can do and Jak was much more effective than I`ve seen him.

I don’t ever remember so much stoppage time - was it 15 minutes? It was like watching the Premiership. And we could have had more, had the referee not done the sensible thing and blown up whilst McKenna was still getting loaded onto the stretcher (although I remember a Fife Cup tie being abandoned at Kelty when Aaron Splaine broke his leg and had to be treated on the pitch).

We created a few half-chances in the first half, but for the most part, I think my eyes started to bleed with the dreariness on display.

Given the option of a speculative forward ball or a safe sideways or backward pass to keep possession we’ll almost invariably chose the latter options. Once or twice there was a forward run, but by the time the pass had been played it was too late and the player was yards offside.

Similarly, when we get a free-kick we never seem to launch it into the box to try to create a chance. However, our corners looked threatening – if not the original delivery, then picking up the ball from the clearance.

In some ways the injuries did us a favour – having our four forward players (who all had decent games) on the pitch almost made our minds up for us – no faffing about at the back (although they did play themselves out of trouble rather neatly on occasion) – get the ball forward faster. It helped that Arbroath had to come out to try to play after we scored and left a lot of space in behind. At this stage it looks like Arbroath, Queen’s Park and Morton are struggling, Dundee Utd, Raith and possibly Partick fighting for the championship with the others in the middle somewhere.

It was good to see a couple of poacher’s finishes – we need more of that, and I suppose I shouldn’t be greedy by saying that we should have scored from several of the other chances we created – particularly from McCann’s runs. For once we looked dangerous when we got the ball.

I think it could be 4 months out for a dislocated shoulder? I imagine that some level of fitness could be maintained unlike with a leg injury. Perhaps Fenton should get some time against QP – we may need Edwards to play LCB if the injury situation gets any worse, or try to recall Young.

Speaking of substitutes, what happened to the policy of naming youth team players on the bench? They may not have any chance of playing, but the experience would be good for them – and several of them have a little playing experience.

Finally, does anyone remember Bobby Clark – Aberdeen and Scotland keeper of the 70s? When he lost his place to future Par Ernie McGarr, I believe he played for the first team as a centre-half. Perhaps Max Little could be repurposed??

Ironically, I think the injuries favoured us as we were forced to change the setup. It was similar to the game against Raith, where injury forced them into a similar arrangement. I think Arbroath knew how we would play at the start and it showed in the first half. Sometimes you have to go for it and pressure the opposition into making mistakes. he was a centre half before becoming a goalkeeper which was only a few years ago.

Young cant play for us until January so isnt an option in the short term, got to try and find a free agent even if its for a month and then re-assess the situation.

Irish players are a possibility as they are now in their close season and, if available (like O`Reilly was for the Rovers) may be happy to sign a short-term deal until their new season starts in March (?). On the other hand JMcP may be happy with what he has depending on when Bene and Breen are likely to be available.

I like Chalmers and Aaron Comrie.

Has there been any update on Bene and Breen? Don`t recall seeing much at all since the game they got injured in.
How long they out for?

Bonar Mercer?

Funnily enough many years ago my father worked with Bonar. I read an article in the press where they were talking about him coming back into the team after a long period out. I mentioned it to my father who mentioned it to him. He didn`t know anything about it but low and behold he was playing on the Saturday and marked a period where he remained and ever present in the team. He sent me two free tickets to the next game which was good of him.

It`s a bit disappointing that we rarely reap any benefit from the number of corner kicks we get. Last night we had 12, mostly decent deliveries, but I can`t remember us troubling their keeper from any of them. Last year Rhys Breen got on the end of a few of them and in the recent past we`ve had Euan Murray and Lee Ashcroft who were dangerous. Although for a couple of seasons, Ashy`s went anywhere but the goal, that changed when he went to Dundee. O`Reilly now at Raith was good at it when he was at Hamilton. We don`t seem to have anyone at the moment, oh for an Andy Smith or Andy Tod!

Not surprised we don’t tend to score many at corners. Would imagine we are one of the smaller teams in the league especially with the current central defensive partnership, should improve when breen and bene are back.

Chalmers one of the taller players and he tends to take the corners but he rarely wins a header anyway.

We tend to struggle a little bit in the air in this league and don’t win our fair share. Other teams tend to be bigger and more physical and we don’t have a great physical presence.

Another reason why McCann on the wing makes sense, should win more in the air against generally smaller full backs.

Back to being drenched in my own negativity….

With our perceived lack of height would you not expect us to lose more goals when defending corners and crosses? Our `goals against` total is actually pretty low considering the defensive changes we`ve had to make this season.

Only 3 teams conceded less goals and 2 of them only 1 goal less. Someone said earlier "we`ll be fine" I`d argue we are fine.

I`d argue that Chalmers wins more headers than people give him credit for.
Actually, anyone got the stats for that?

I think huge credit must go to Chris Hamilton for our defensive performances.

Nobody looking at him would see a natural centre-half, but he wins a surprising percentage of headers and is always in or around the action.

I like the way he fulfils the captain`s role too, comforting KRH as he lay on the pitch in agony, and at the end of the match leading the players over to console McKenna and the other Arbroath players.

Wee Hammy is a mouthy wee boy, but its so much passion for his boyhood club he cant help himself, he is a top lad as ive had the pleasure of being a good pal of his for a while, and what a player he is, he deserves more credit for how hes stepped into that captains role for bene

He’s actually a really good centre half. Obviously he’ll lose out in a lot of aerial duels against bigger strikers but his reading of the game, all round play and leadership qualities have helped us massively in Kyle’s absence.

I think Chris Hamilton has done a great job at the back. His lack of height is more than made up for by his situational awareness and his ability to play the ball out of defence. In my view he has been one of the best signings we have made as a club in the last 10 years, and barring injury will go on to be one of the clubs legends. He has grown into that role and is benefitting from regular games.

To be fair, I have voted for Hamilton as the player of the month. Granted, there has been a narrow defeat to United and a pumping by the Rovers, but he fair gets stuck into the role he plays. A lot of heart and pride in display.

Was it not mourinho that was always bemused at why we basically celebrated getting a corner (appreciate he was talking about England but applies to here as well)… his view was that it didn’t make sense when the great majority of time, they come to nothing

I`m not 100% certain, but I think that statistically, you`re more likely to concede from a corner than to score.

I`m no statistician but, if the attacking team has, say, a 10% chance of scoring from a corner does that not mean the defending team has a 10% chance of conceding?

I think he means concede at your own end on the counter.🙂

According to this article in 2015, you score about 3.5% of corners and concede at your own end about 0.4%.

Yes, that`s what I meant, parathletic. I don`t know how reliable* or wide-ranging the article in the WP is, but the idea that the attacking team is vulnerable to a quick counter attack if they don`t score from a corner is difficult to argue with.

On first reading the average 3.5% of corners leading to goals doesn`t seem very productive but that is 1 in 30 corners and in our case would equate to a goal every 3 or 4 games and 10 goals in a league season. I would settle for that.

Some years ago, I read an article that said that the average number of goals from corners per club in a league season is 4.

Did Raith not get an emergency loan in last week?

Boy was a free agent and he signed til January

Sam Wardrop (Celtic, Dumbarton, Airdrie) needs a club after "retiring".

I watched his video on Instagram, quite inspiring.
On last night, that victory takes us into the play-off spots, quite an achievement when we haven`t had a chance to play our best starting eleven on a regular basis and after last night that will continue unfortunately.

Guess who`s apparently training with Raith? 🤦‍♂️

😂 he’s played 25 games since 2018. He’s not played in over 2 years. Goodluck to him but there’s no chance he’s getting a fulltime contract anywhere.
