 Game v Queens Park
Topic Originator: Paralex
Date:   Thu 8 Feb 18:37

Call me an over optimist and shoot me down in flames, if we don`t, but I think we can take all 3 points and set ourselves up for a positive run to the finishing tape. QP have had a reasonably good recent spell but this is one for our boys to get their teeth into and start believing in themselves. Even my non sporting pals have noticed a downturn in our performances, so I lay down the challenge to the team. Go out there and make us proud to be Pars fans again and make yourselves proud to wear the badge.

I can`t make sense of the manager`s comments on COWS re player availability. He says Wighton is definitely out but we have the same numbers available as last week but then he says one is back but two are out! All the injured players have been training and it seems like Bene needs another scan and the go-ahead from a London specialist to step up his training.

Here comes the pessimistic view as I think we are going to get exposed again with another comfortable away win by 2 or 3 goals

2 home games against the only two teams below us.
If we`re not going for 6 points, just give it up completely.

Ep.17 of East End Tales is out now with Andrius Skerla

Surely your presence at the game is more likely to bring us a bit of good luck, given we haven`t been doing too well without you, Dave? 🙂

I can`t see the players being so poor again. They`ll be hurting after last week and determined to put that particular nightmare behind them. And another bit of encouragement, Queens Park are not a patch on Morton on present form.

It won`t be easy, but even with our decimated squad, this is a game we can win.

I think its going to depend on our formation , surely Hamilton reverts back to his centre back position to give us a bit stability , and hopefully Holmes will start up front with Moffat alongside. Last week is old news .COYP

It’s a weird game, could purely be down to who scores first

Going to go for 2-1 Queen’s Park or 2-2 with a late rally from us but too late to
secure a win.

I really hope you’re right but I just can’t see it based on how shocking we were last week. Queen’s Park have just signed an excellent defender and have a goalscorer in their ranks - two thinks we are badly lacking at the moment.

Hopefully our luck will turn but the wait on key players returning from injury just keeps going. It’s getting desperate but I don’t see why we don’t give Holmes or Sutherland a start on Saturday as nothing else seems to be working. Hopefully we can finally scrap the 3-5-2 as well. It’s not working.

I`ll be very surprised if it isn`t the same 3-4-1-1 on Saturday, Hamilton at CB paul allan back in mid with chalmers and moffat just off McCann,

O`Halloran on the right, Edwards on the left,

Fagan Walcott and Otoo either side of Hamilton.

Really need a result in this one.

Wow! I think there`s every chance the Pars might be persuaded to pay you to stay away. 😀

Roughly how many games have you been to in that time? If it`s in double figures, I`ll maybe organise a whip round on dotnet... 🤔

Last September for me and I am a season ticket holder. I don’t want to get to 5 months without a win. Work commitments made me miss our only home win at that time. Cheques can be made payable to……I can set up a go fund me page if needed.

Luckily enough I may only just be in double figures for that period due to various things 😂 I did go about 2 years without seeing a Pars win in person after COVID hit as last game before lockdown was the dull 0-0 in Arbroath the week of lockdown 😂 I walked out of my next live game after Joel Nouble made it 3-0 at East End 🙄

Not being negative or trying to get bites here. I genuinely think we will lose comfortably. QP are on the up and, even when they are quiet, they have Paton who can rip you up if you aren`t absolutely on top defensively, which we haven`t been. The confidence will be very low and we are missing real leadership and experience. McPake isn`t innocent either. His tactics have been rotten for a few months now. We need to get back to basics and try to be hard to beat. I`d be tempted to play 2 at the back to allow a midfield 3 of Otto, Hamilton and Summers as Chalmers deserves to be dropped. Difficulty with that is that we haven`t got Bene or a natural, fit right back. McPake is in a difficult position but it`s his squad that he has built, so he has to find a way to get something out of them.

I think the only thing we can bring to the table today is for a hard working performance and players prepared to go that extra mile for example not turning backs on shots because the ball might hurt.

I can`t see how we can win today i think our attacking threat is poor so where do the goals come from I`ve no idea

Think this highlights something key for me. Queens are a very young team supplemented by some experienced heads….sound familiar but what’s the difference?

The difference is that the experienced heads they have are top half of the championship level players who are capable of changing a game and are contributing to the team, they are actively leading the others.

Just have to hope Dom doesn’t get the freedom our midfield usually provides and paton forgets his shooting boots.

I just want to see the pars go out and be aggressive, we don`t scare teams at home, something needs to change on that front.

Unless McPake finds a way to start getting the team to score goals then you`re going to struggle to turn this form around. Really hoping Holmes has something about him as a striker, then you need to supply him with chances. They all will be desperate to get to this game and have the chance to put things right.

Two absolutely pivotal home matches to set the tone for the remaining part of the season.

Attitude today is critical, both from the players and ourselves as supporters.

Last Saturday, some of the players, and perhaps the manager too, seemed broken by the scale and manner of the defeat - that has to have been changed during the week. And some of the fans didn`t behave well either.

Queens Park will go out determined not only to silence the crowd but to turn them against the Pars - if that happens, we`re done for. The acid test today will be if we go a goal behind - it happens, even to the best of teams. The players and fans have to believe it`s just a setback and that the team has the ability and courage to turn it round.

I hope the team play as a team, with tactics that get the most from the players available and that everyone who goes out on the pitch knows their role and what to do based on the scenario around them.
Genuinely felt last week like a team who had only met in the car park before the game… everyone making the same run etc

IMHO, Injuries or lack of trying are not an excuse for what happened last week - later on there was a bit of ‘hiding’ by players, eg static when off the ball and staying beside their opposite number etc when the game was lost …but it was clear the tactics weren’t working but a solid, well organised team with the players we’ve got should be enough to win today

We don’t scare teams because we don’t have the players to scare teams. A team of youngsters who get bullied off the ball. Even our vice captain is only 22. We’re in big trouble, no doubt about it.

Fagan-Walcott might never be seen again? He’s been Found out?

Well do well to get anything today looking at that team, that midfield can’t and won’t tackle and McCann hasn’t scored for months and quite frankly never looks likely to.

What was the point in loaning Holmes if he’s not good enough to usurp a
‘Striker’ who doesn’t score goals?

Sigh…

(He’s hoping they somehow prove me wrong)

It’s perfectly normal for fans not to feel optimistic when we’ve not won in 7 and were completely embarrassed on our home turf last week. The fact we didn’t strengthen in January adds more misery to the situation.

I can`t figure out the formation from that line up, could possibly be 4 at the back

Same formation as every week:

Mehmet

Comrie
Benjamin
Hamilton
Otoo
Edwards

Allan
Chalmers

O`Halloran
Summers

McCann

If they line up like that the back 5 will just get pinned in.

O halloran will be out wide,

I think it might be a 4-5-1 with Allan and summers being more further forward-and or on the left and otoo breaking up play for chalmers,

Well for me Last week is now a distant memory trying to blot it out , and I am hoping the players want to make up for that horrible display but we need the crowd to do their part also , we need to be encouraging the players, as slagging them off does not help one bit !
We can do with a wee bit fire in their belly today and I hope they chase after everything and not give Queens Park any time or space on the ball ,certainly hoping everyone pulling a jersey on today will go out there and give their all and hopefully we create and take our chances when they come along , They are also playing to restore some pride today So get out there and do us proud
And Please no turning your back on the ball or ball watching or basic mistakes , get into them
We need to score first to get anything from this game today

Cmon Ye Pars

If this is us doing ok, we`re going down.

We`ve limited their chances, but letting them get to about 30 yards out before pressing. It`s just awful to watch.

Need to change the approach second half or its 0-0 at best.

That about sums it up, Rusty—a couple of efforts on goal, but not too much to get excited about. There is clearly a lot more work being put in than last week. Queens had the first 15 minutes, but we came into the game well, pressing with more determination in the last half hour.

Their goalie looks vulnerable at times when pressed at high balls, something we might look to exploit in the second half. For QP, Turner and Thomas always offer a threat. Our backline is more robust, and Benjamin looks more settled and confident this week. He provides a good balance to Otoo on either side of our captain.

It`s all to play for in the second half.

Thought we looked a bit more aggressive in the first half but never really looked like creating much. Goalscorer and experienced centre half (and a midfielder tbh) were probably vital in the January window if not the summer but we`ve decided or been forced to go down another route. Hoping we can be there or there abouts when Benedictus and Todd come back seems to be our only hope at the moment. Better hope Arbroath don`t start picking up points....

This is really hard to watch , undone with just a delivery into the box
too many players ball watching !
As others have said we have nobody upfront that can dig us out of a hole or take a chance if it comes along , but our chances are few and far between
nothing between the teams both as bad as each other but how many goals have we lost this season with balls into the box
and as I type this we lose another , Deniz should be doing better but on the other hand defenders should be blocking , I absolutely see nothing that gets me at least a wee bit of positivity !
We just need to put our hands up and say we are Absolutely sh** , I keep hearing about we will do ok once we get players back , but unfortunately it might be too late

Oh well seaside league here we come. Even me not being the biggest optimist with all things Pars did not foresee such a miserable season. Yes we have had more than our fair share of injuries but not addressing our issues up front in the summer and our issues defensively in the last window have been unforgivable

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

The set up of this team is shocking, it takes a special manager to make us terrible at the back and set up too defensively to look like scoring.

McPake has to go now. The signings this season have been brutal, we’re weaker than last season and he sticks to the same tactics week in week out which don’t work. I really thought we were going in the right direction with him but he’s destroyed all the good he brought to us last season. The board need to take a good look at themselves too.

Unfortunately, relegation looks a certainty now.

For what it’s worth I’m inclined to blame the board for this. Given the injury issues we clearly needed some experienced players in January to steady the ship. I’m sure mcpake never asked for kids on loan in the transfer window.

Mcpakeisn’t blameless and I’d definitely have made some different decisions in the summer regarding personnel. Also I feel that I’d be setting the team up differently at this point. We are too predictable and it’s just not working.

Mcpake may well be out of a job in the next week or too but that isn’t going to solve all our problems, they go so much deeper.

Same poor display as last week, no attempt by players or manager to try and fix the situation. Let’s just keep trying the same thing and hope it works this week. Not sure player’s returning will make much difference as confidence is low with this lots off players.
Board needed to step up in the summer transfer window to help get McPake a squad that’s wasn’t going to struggle in the Championship sadly that never happened and for whatever reason we couldn’t sign anyone to improve us in January either.
We’ve got relegation written all over us and the clubs below us know it. Sad days……..hopefully a miracle can come from somewhere.

You cannot just blame injuries for our current plight
We knew where we needed players and experienced one`s at that but what do we get untried and untested youngsters from U23 leagues , I do not blame the lads that have come in as it is a good opportunity for them but unfortunately they have come in at the wrong time , cannot expect young lads with no experience to turn things around for us ! we were all crying out for experienced players but the Board took the cheap option as usual ! I do not know what goes on behind the scenes so I cannot speculate what input McPake really had with the recruitment , but one thing I do know is he needed to change his tactics because every team knows how to set up against us and they bide their time because they know we have strikers who couldn`t score in a brothel
Manager has to take a lot of hte blame on tactics and for the long contracts that was given to some of our players who really are only first division players , I have followed the Pars for 60 years but what is on show at present reminds me of the recent Hughes/Yogi period especially with the lack of tactics , and if this is what I am going to get served up week in and week out maybe it`s time to do something better with my time , yes tomorrow I might be more rationale but just now I am deflated, but we are in freefall just now
Pretty sure Arbroath will fancy their chances against us too

How much cash is available to McPake? Who wants to come to the Pars irrespective of the league position for the wages being offered. How badly has he suffered with injuries. Each of these factors contributed to the use of a limited squad of players.

Players looked up for the fight first half but totally out of ideas or creativity.
McPake really has to change the tactics and shape with the shambles of a squad we have available.
The players looked really dispirited at the end and the booing doesn’t help any of them.
Again, it wasn’t through any lack of effort we lost but not having the quality players in key positions.
Forward line is a joke the midfield even more so.

It was plainly obvious at the start of the season our squad was limited , relying on the squad that won the league was a big mistake, we didn,t score a lot of goals in winning the league yet gave long contracts to very poor strikers, we failed to bring any quality into the side and the January window was a joke , a bad injury list didn,t help but if your bringing players in is it not to strengthen the squad , ?

This is unacceptable. We have a support only bettered by dundee united yet we cannot compete with the rovers, caley or Queen’s Park for players with the necessary experience. What have the Germans brought to the club? David Cook and Thomas Meggle not doing this for nothing. They need to stand up and be counted here. I am not sure it is all lying with Mcpake on this.

I said something similar on another thread, before the Germans we were a top 4 club, they came and we were relegated. Between them and the CEO we will be probably be relegated again. I think McPake will walk.

Recently, I have tried not to allow football to dictate my mood because, let`s face it, there is so much more to life.
However, the last couple of months watching football at EEP has been a terrible experience. Our home record is so damn awful.
We looked devoid of ideas, motivation, and bravery, but this starts at the top of the tree, not just the players and the management team.
Injuries have played a massive part, and despite what we may think about rushing players back, it is the players we really need to be playing - Bene a proper leader (that`s not a dig at Hamilton), Matty who gives us drive and Kane who can hug the touchline and gives the crowd a real buzz.
I know we want change in formation and his stubbornness is beginning to grate but I can`t imagine for one minute that McPake would not want to sign some experience like Rudden, Kerr etc.
The radio silence from Cook, Meggle and co speaks volumes.

We did change it a bit from last week in that we didn`t try any of the short passing stuff in the first half. It wasn`t great but we were competitive - after a first 15 mins mainly in our half we were in the game. At least it meant that we we able to have some of the ball in the other half, rather than being pressed deep constantly.

The problem, as I said last week, is that we don`t really have a credible direct option. Playing as we did allowed us to compete in the first half, but we weren`t threatening from it as a team like Morton last week were.

The second half was terrible from us, absolutely played off the park. Didn`t seem to be able to get in the game at all, and twice before the first goal we were caught by an overload on our right, leading to dangerous crosses coming in. Third time, we didn`t get away with it.

As it turned out, that really was it. We`re just so fragile that after going a goal down, there was no belief in the team that we could get back into it. Just looked a beaten side and when it went to 2-0 there was absolutely nothing.

I don`t agree that we were more aggressive in the first half than last week. Our style was different but neither side as interested in being physical or aggressive at all. And, after weeks of seeing teams press us when we tried to play out, it was very annoying to see us flatly refuse to press as we allowed them to play out to the halfway line unchallenged. Lewis McCann tried a few times, but a press doesn`t work if only one player does it.

What a sad place we`ve come to. We really need a break soon.

I didnt see any aggression from any of our players today. The first half was embarassing. QP were not a good team but at least they tried to move forward.

McPake has a formation that doesnt work but he won`t change. He changes the individuals but today made it worse.

When we lose a goal we need to add to the strike force on the park and maybe even take a chance. Heaven forbid.

Maybe he didn`t notice we find it almost impossible to score right now.

We have to stay up. Not sure how we can do that right now but we have to.

Our midfield is woeful with no drive whatsoever. The defence is leaking goals with questionable new players at the back.

There is no leadership on the field anywhere and no aggression. But going down would be disastrous and next Saturday might show that it is on.

Rubbish, absolute rubbish again. We were more aggressive and more direct as Socks points out, but with no threat, and against weaker opposition. Our `front 3` whoever they are, waste their energy pressing without support (no surprise with a central midfield pairing of Chalmers and Allan) and chasing wild punts. The defence was ok but was eventually undone by 3 pieces of quality.

I am pretty fed up with McPake now, the like for like substitutions in the second half were laughable, the system wasn`t working, at least try something else, we might still have lost 3-0, but at least there would have been a chance of something different.

I not going to listen to whatever rubbish he/the players have spouted again. I am fed up of watching a team set up to sit in their own half and hope to scrape a 0-0. He needs to get the team playing better, getting decent results very quickly or he needs to leave.

The midfield neither protects the defence or provides ammunition for the front men. Totally ineffective.

Welcome to the club da no 1.

Chalmers and Allan might actually be worse than wedderburn and shiels at least they had certain aspects they were good at.

Your at the point now you would almost accept defeat against Arbroath if it was a result of mcpake trying something different and actually having a go by pushing players forward and moving the ball quickly.

I can`t see that changing with the clubs scout laying balls off in the warm up and on our bench.

c'mon the pars

We don’t need a scout when we only bring in mcpakes mates and young loans based on limited video clips.

It was better for an hour – not great, but better.

IMO Comrie is a better wing back than a centre-back, and O’Halloran a better forward than wing-back, so playing players in something more like their natural positions was going to have benefits. I’ve no idea why Fagan-Walcott wasn’t in the squad (or why there was no Sammy the Tammy) – surely not another injury? But Benjamin looked better this week. Not great, but better.

The big change was cutting out the faffing about the back, and going long more often, and getting the ball forward faster from open play. We created a couple of half-chances, without ever looking particularly threatening.

On the debit side, we tended to sit off them and allow them to get to about 30 yards from goal, unchallenged. Part of this is the set-up I feel – we seemed to have spare players at the back waiting for the inevitable onslaught leaving us shorthanded further up the park.

I thought we might be due for a break – we got away with a couple of errors and a couple of shots that didn’t end up in the back of the net, but then the roof fell in. For the first goal my view was obscured by a pillar, but I think we were attacking, Moffat was caught in two minds and they ran down the park, we had the wrong men on the wrong players and didn’t stop the cross or win the header. The second was criminal – Dom Thomas had all the time in the world to tee himself up and bend it in at the far post. The third goal was a nice bit of skill after we were sliced open following a missed tackle in the middle of the park, but the game was over at that stage.

Obviously, I’ve never been a professional sportsman, so I’d be interested in the views of people who have been closer to this sphere than I, but it seems that a lot of so-called coaching is really repetitive instruction – drilling things into players so that they do “the right thing” without having to think about it. Arguably that is one area where experience comes in. But it seems that players can become “overcoached” – unable to think for themselves. They get in the right positions but there is no spontaneity, and sometimes they seem to lose sight of the basics. Everyone is in the right position but the ball is in our net and they are all looking around wondering how it happened. (Perhaps that was more the case last week – I think people were more out of position this week – which means they might spend the week on the training pitch ironing out that fault thinking we’re making progress).

...

As has been pointed out, the substitutions were like-for-like which was odd, and perhaps a bit late in the day (although looking back 60, 70 and 80 minutes for your switches isn’t abnormal). Again I’d like to see the likes of Hoggan and McLeod on the bench to give them a taste of what it’s like. I feel sorry for Fenton – I’m not sure why we are developing other clubs’ youngsters when we might be better developing our own.

I think there has been a change of attitude from the managerial team – first a slight change of approach, but more an open realisation that we are in trouble. Of course we won’t be relegated from the league (but we might be relegated from the division – I find pedantry some small consolation in these circumstances). And I remember Stephen Pressley making worthless guarantees in similar circumstances.

I imagine David Cook will be asking what McPake is going to do to change things, and what the board can do to help (whilst checking up on contract details). I had other plans for next week, but maybe my job is to support the team instead.
