Mcpake quoting we are about to add a couple of experienced players. Let’s hope it’s done on Monday.

What will have changed to only get these guys in now? Why not 2 weeks ago or even a week ago?

It’s possible teams they are coming from needed to sign or had players coming back from injury. Maybe not but possible.

Why has it taken to this point to try and get these sort of players in? Time to scrap this just signing youngsters. Especially when most of them wouldn’t get a game for Cowdenbeath. Let’s just do what every other club does and have a balance of players. These investors/board have a lot to answer for. I wouldn’t trust them to run a bath.

As McPake has said countless times, once the Premiership window closes, these teams reassess their squads, and decide who they can afford to send out on loan !!

No sure what he’s been like but Darren Brownlie left Dundalk at end of Jan. 29 was in the play offs with Partick few seasons back

A quick look and and I see Queens Park had 5 players 21or under in the starting line up . More than dafc. So I`m sorry the injury list and having to play youngsters doesn`t wash. There just not good enough . That`s what scares me the most with the amount of money getting spent on the academy we can`t seem to attract good enough young talent.

Incoming was planned before today.
There is method in different windows for different divisions and sometimes you have to wait to see if new signings for other teams settle before they decide who they can loan out or release.
On the injury front MFW and Jakubiak will be back in training this week.

Oz I think st Johnstone striker Chris Kane is one of the rumours.

Problem is when you look at the team it’s hard to pick what area needs strengthened first. For me it’s the middle of the park.

Squad is now a mess, too many young loans who we might as well send back now and some older players who we could do with sending out on loan for 18 months!

We`d be as well sending Moffat, Benjamin, Summers and MFW back. Moffat doesn`t get a game, and often games pass him by, despite having effort. Benjamin is obviously hopeless and not ready at any sort of competitive level, same as MFW. Summers is way too naive and hasn`t got the brains in this league. He is too greedy and costs us possession too much. You get away with that in the dross leagues and in the B team. He`ll be a costly loan as well and we aren`t getting anything out of him for the money. We need to use that money on experience. These guys might have talent but this league is a totally different beast altogether. You can`t have young, inexperienced guys trying to skin the opposition constantly.

It`s desperate, but we need a couple of proper, experienced midfielders and one experienced defender in IMO. If it costs money to terminate these guys loans and replace them, it has to be done, as it will be a lot cheaper than getting relegated to League 1. We simply cannot go down after all the effort of last season.

If it is genuinely feasible then it has to be done. This can`t go on.

"McPake revealed after Saturday’s dismal defeat to Queen’s Park that he had been close to adding a new signing ahead of the game.

Another is hopefully also in the pipeline this week.

Both are understood to be vastly experienced performers who can inspire and lead by example"

in the Courier.

it wont be a long list of options, at a guess a dozen or so and yes that will include guys at Dundee and StJohnstone.

I thought if both clubs agreed to it, loans could be terminated at any time? I hope so because Summers and Moffat are just not up to it. Probably will have good enough careers in the game, but at this stage we need guys with experience that can dig is out a hole.

Of course loans can be terminated at any time. The player just can`t play for their parent club until the next window.

Quite possibly but the player wont be available till window opens again, so fairly pointless from parent clubs view.

... and if there`s an agreement in place where we pay a percentage of their wages, it`s not in the parent club`s interest to cancel.

Far more sensible to keep them around the squad, and, for some, not judge them on 1 or 2 games.

KRH didn`t really establish himself until the 2nd half of the season, in a mostly winning team. Not saying that will happen of course.

Mcpake would also have said this about o’hallaran and jakubiak.

Will be interesting to see why comes in and if they make the cut, law of averages suggests mcpake is due a good signing soon…

You would think that even an experienced grisly hard tackling player from the junior ranks would do a better job than we have at the present time, and who knows he might be offered a contract at the end of the season if he does a good job. And bye the way although Airdrie did get well beaten in the end by Hearts I found myself wishing the pars could play more like them. They may pass it about at the back but unlike us they manage to get it up to their forwards more often than not and there is always someone in a wide position to receive the ball.

Looking more recently, we could do with a Calum Morris for that defence and an Andy Geggan for the midfield. Players who played with pride for the club and weren`t scared to get in about it and put their body on the line.

If Kane was the guy close to signing on Saturday, perhaps QP have come in with a counter offer over the weekend ?

I heard he was about to sign but turned us down as he was concerned about their already being a Kane at the club. Big concern about it being too confusing and was a risk he`d be called "Surname Kane".

If he lives near perth surely we’re the better option?

Are we absolutely sure we want to continue signing only experienced players that mcpake or Mackay have worked with before, it’s not proved successful so far and it’s very limiting.

Defender needed more urgently, imo.

Injured midfield players due back before our centre backs

Would allow Hamilton to play in midfield and provide some protection, meantime

Aye, hard to argue against the Cardiff loanees looking bad, especially if it turns out we are after/bring in another centre back.

Problem with Hamilton and Otoo in the middle is where does the creativity come from? Obviously if Todd was available he has the energy and the eye for a goal but without him we`re back to relying on the full backs getting crosses in - which would he good for Kane if we can get decent deliveries in - or thr forwards trying to engineer a chance for themselves. Summers, Moffat, Chalmers, Allan - they`ve all had assists or secondary assists this season but can we rely on them go create three, four, five chances a game? Doubtful IMO.

OK, I`ll bite again. Just put yourself in McPake`s shoes for a minute. Bene`s out, Breen`s out, Fisher`s out. He goes to the BoD and tells them he desperately needs some central defenders.....

So they ask him if he wants experienced defenders or a couple of teenagers with no first team experience to speak of on loan......

And McPake says "Yea, just get me those kids. Give me 10 mins before the game and I`ll teach them everything I know about how to play in central defence....

Sounds pretty plausible to me.... 🤔

Berkey, do you not think that it might be advantageous for a manager to sign a player whose ability and character he is familiar with, or would you rather he went for a pig in a poke?

See how well it worked out for player and manager, when Peter Grant signed Paul Watson, for example.

There defo an advantage to knowing a player but it’s very limiting being so dependant on Dundee and st Johnstone.

They knew o’hallaran and he’s had a poor season, so maybe going for a good player that they don’t know has the same odds of being good for us?

O`halloran would get a game for any other club in the championship,

Like most of our first team funny enough.

Which is why I`m starting to think the management might be the issue,

Last year was full time vs part time so a top 2 finish was the least we should achieve.

Hopefully I`m wrong and this is just a blip.

There has been an improvement in MOH in the past few games , perhaps he has been slow getting back to full fitness , but he is suffering like the rest of the front line with a lack of support , how many times do we go forward and yet we have
nobody in the box.

Maybe that’s the point, mcpake and Mackay signed a pal from st Johnstone who clearly doesn’t fit into the rigid formation they always play so has struggled to contribute anything of note all season.

Or he’s just lost a yard of pace and that was a big part of his game.

Either way he’s been a massive let down. He should have stood out at this level in a team with very little creativity or pace in it.

Got to agree with Berkey on this last point. Overall, very poor, regardless of being played out of position.

If we even got half the player that was on show in the first Morton game on a semi regular basis (acknowledge he was in a more advanced role that day), he would definitely be considered as having had a successful tenure with us. Unfortunately, more often than not, doesn`t even get pass marks.

Think a lot of the judgements of MOH are quite harsh here. Wing backs are going to struggle to be effective if the midfield/attacking players aren’t performing. There’s times he’s gone past a couple of men, lifted his head and there’s been nobody in the box and no midfielders moving to give him an option. Josh Edwards gets rave reviews, but I honestly don’t think he’s been better than MOH when he has played, because they’re both suffering from the same problem - lack of support from teammates.

We really need to add an experienced defender, to allow Hamilton/Otoo to return to midfield.

You could single out any player for criticism just now with one or 2 exceptions. My own expectations of MOH were high for this season as a Premier League player thats dropped down a level. I feel Edwards done better and he doesn`t have that level of experience so in my mind MOH has disappointed.

I`ve no idea how extensive our scouting network is, Andrew, but posters have remarked on this forum that our chief scout is normally in the dugout on match days.....

"So we sign crap from Angus and crap from down south. Excellent plan Mr McPake."

I can`t believe you think the manager would not consider any player from outwith these regions if he was

(a) good enough,
(b) wanted to come to the Pars,
(c) we could afford his wages and
(d) his club was prepared to release him.

Perhaps you`re under the impression that the manager is handed a pot of money (OK, a budget) and told he can spend it anyway he likes, with no input from the Board whatsoever?

Wee eck the insinuation here is that we’re only interested in signing experienced players from Dundee and at Johnstone and as these players keep opting for bigger clubs, we then don’t bring any experienced players in (like in Jan). Maybe just maybe we can cast the net a little bit wider to find other players that can help us when none are available from Perth or Dundee.

Mcpake has shown he’ll take young loans from anywhere regardless of ability and personality why doesn’t he trust experienced players that he doesn’t know personally?

As has been pointed out before, Berkey, he tried to sign Brophy from Ross County and there was also mention of Tommy Smith, an experienced pro and NZ international from MK Dons. How do you or anyone else know he hasn`t tried to sign other players that didn`t make the media?

We can make 3 more loan signings, as long as they haven`t played for another club and play in the Scottish Premiership. Really think we need to get a midfielder and another centre half in. Going in to games with a midfield of Allan and Chalmers is...just plain dire.

Not sure how realistic those signings actually were wee eck, one hasn’t moved and the other has moved half way around the world so it’s not like they have signed for our rivals…

Mcpake talked about 2 signings this week?

While I’m sure Kane is an improvement on our other strikers I’m pretty sure we’re all hoping for a central midfielder or defender before Saturday.

Yes, he said he hoped to sign a defender and, now that Wighton`s out for the season, he`s hoping to sign another experienced striker. Just because they haven`t happened doesn`t mean he`s not trying.

Reading Berkeys posts is actually really becoming very, very tiresome. It`s the constant flow of negativity. It`s like he goes looking for it, if he found a silver lining, he`d be hunting for the cloud, and he wouldn`t be happy till he found it. God knows how someone can function like that.

What silver linings are there, as we approach a game versus bottom of the league with a dodgy defence , almost non existent midfield and strikers not even making chances.

I don`t doubt for a moment that if we lose on Saturday, there will be multiple calls for McPake to go. And I would support that move. On the other hand, if we win and we can see seeds of recovery, then we have to keep faith with our management team.

I don`t know about you guys, but the key things I will be looking for are: more cohesion and purpose between defence, midfield, and the forwards line; a change in formation is a must - we cannot continue to telegraph our intentions to the opposition and; perhaps most important, a sense that there is a positive spirit in the team.

A draw or a defeat will be unacceptable. It must be a win against Arbroath.

If you think you will lose, you`ve lost....."

I`m glad Berkey and a few others aren`t giving the motivational pre-match team talk tomorrow. 🙂

"Delusional hope is just as bad"

Is thinking you have a decent chance of beating the bottom team at home, delusional?
Absolutely no point in the players going out thinking they`re likely to lose. I wonder what Jim Leishman would make of Berkey & Co.

Sorry, Berkey, but I think your natural pessimism has infected a number of other posters on here. Luckily, I`ve been vaccinated against it. 😉

Dunfermline`s loan deal with Lee Ashcroft is agreed in principle.

It comes down to the former #COYP defender to decide whether he wants to rejoin his former club and manager or not.

Move has to be approved by the end of the month, and #DAFC has three loan spots available.

Yes agree. It`s getting late on in the season. Nobody is going to come in at this stage and instantly turn it around. I don`t think Jak and MoH are particularly effective in my opinion. Notable that the goal came from a defender. We need to stop leaking goals with a solid defence so that the midfield can confidently get into forward positions and hopefully start to score goals.

I’m sick to the back teeth of hearing McPake saying we need a new player or 2 yet seeing our Chief Scout on the bench every week scouting our own team! He should be out there identifying players and speaking to the right folk to see if they’d be interested in coming!

100% agree with this. I find it incredible that the investors identified the goalkeeping coach being a first team player as an issue, but don’t see an issue with our Chief Scout sitting on our bench every week. He can’t be doing his job as Chief Scout as effectively as possible, within this setup.

trying to justify that title might be a bit of a stretch never mind the chief scout title, but being in the dugout or technical area isnt new, hes been doing it for 2 and a half seasons now apart from a couple of games under Hughes.

"Who is the chief scout?"

It`s bizarre - a few people were having digs about this very topic before and I asked the same question as I didn`t know, but it got ignored then too. It`s like there`s some kind of secret sect and that the name of the Chief Scout is some kind of Shibboleth.

Evidently, with Ashcroft`s CV, it means #DAFC is not the only club interested in recruiting the two-time PFA Scotland Championship Team of the Year member.

However, he could still stay at Dens Park and compete with Lamie and Portales, who are returning to full fitness.

Mcpake only signs experienced players he knows, not sure what the point is in Gary unless he’s scouting these random young loans before we bring them in.

If true, then it must be a manageable loss if we turned down a 6 figure bid for Josh.

Ross McArthur was not involved in the decision to appoint John Hughes, but guilty as charged re Peter Grant.

back oh the net, Sun 18 Feb 17:00~#~

Amateur hour😂 wait till you see the accounts then we will talk about amateur hour rumoured to be a 6 figure operating loss.

You may have been thinking about the number of zeroes, BOTN. I was at the last supporters meeting in which our CEO said we`d made substantial losses in answer to a question from the floor. He didn`t give an exact figure, but I formed the impression that it was much more than £100k.

Some 17 year old from Morecombe or Dorking more likely.
We are absolutely useless just now at practically everything. Can’t really blame Ashcroft, potential championship or relegation battle. If he watched both teams over the weekend not exactly a difficult decision.

I`d have been shocked if he`d signed for us given he was scoring for Dundee a few weeks ago and his been in their team up until Saturday.

Not sure Raith need him so think they`re just taking the p1ss now.

Hoping there`s others lined up

Rovers are going for it, and are getting business done. We are going nowhere fast, an experienced CB might be the difference between staying up and relegation. Its clear we just can’t compete with top teams in the division.

Absolutely embarrassing yet again on our part, if true. Do the board not worry about fans no longer attending games and the possibility of relegation if we don’t pull our fingers out and strengthen in areas that are screaming for quality? We can bring three more players in on loan from Scotland and the way it’s looking at the moment, we need to use all three and to bolster the defence and midfield. You would think conceding 9 goals in 3 at home would push us into bringing in players quicker but as usual we’re dragging our heels.

If we don’t add anyone at the back for Friday, Brian Graham will have a field day against Walcott and Benjamin.

What a shower of gossipy sweety wives.
You really can`t help yourselves.

Raging at recent results is fair enough, but honestly, have any of you ever thought about launching a career writing fiction? Some of you would make a fortune.
Incredible imaginations.

Ashcroft will remember the abuse they all got last time he was here. He was never likely to return when all that ugliness is once again raising its head.

This purely comes down to league position and is a no brainer for the player,

When it comes to money, we are obviously not competing financially, that could be foolish but it is impossible to tell at the moment.

One thing is for certain,

Mcpake has to keep us up, if he doesn`t the whole pack of cards could come crumbling down.

It is worrying but we all have to keep the faith,

A full season in the championship next year with Fisher, Otoo, Todd, Breen,Edwards, Comrie, KRH, Bene and McCann all playing the majority of the season and we should comfortably be in the top half.

The management team have a great foundation to work with.....but staying up is imperative.

They could if what was said above is true - that he was ready to sign last week but there was no-one around to sign off on the spend. All conjecture mind but could be we didn`t move quick enough and Rovers have now come in.

Could equally easily be that he was always planning to talk to others.

In terms of money, Raith might be offering to pay more money for their share of wages, so Dundee would prefer that.
Also, there could well be a bonus payable to the player for promotion

Enjoyed the post above talking about building a team around certain players next season and one being McCann, out of contract at the end of the season and imo hasn’t merited a contract extension. He can go for me. Need to realise the group of players from last season, a good chunk of them have kinda proved they aren’t up to the task in the Championship.

But first, let’s try stay up.

I was just testing the water, Raymie! I would imagine the loanee club pays the agreed amount, including any bonus, to the lending club who would then pay the player. I suppose the lending club might get a share which wouldn`t be passed on to the player.

It really isn’t. Players want to play for a manager….

We’ve not had a sporting director in 10 years but signed players, how did that happen?

Going to blow your mind. When you don`t have a role, the duties are usually fulfilled by other employees. When you do have someone to do those duties, guess what?

A sporting director should be involved in identifying and enticing players to sign.

Except he did want to come but got a better offer. As others have said, would you rather go for the club who have the potential to win the league, or the one scrapping at the bottom end?

The board is disappointing tbh. We lost some good guys and the replacements are almost all good, but I do wonder about what expertise some of them actually bring. As far as I`m aware, one of them ran his business into the ground!

Still think the lack of signings is down to the development of the academy at Rosyth . Any cash we have has been invested there and not on the playing side. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and maybe we should have invested in the playing side first , ride along with that team for a few years in the championship then invested in the academy. Seems to me we have done things around the other way and it`s going to come back a bite us I think . Then again it`s a 4-6 year plan

Agree with this , training complex will be a wonderful thing hopefully but should never be at the expense of the first team. If you can’t afford a squad that can comfortably live in the championship as a minimum then you can’t afford a training complex.

I`m not one of these entitled fans. I don`t believe all this big club nonsense players peddle when they sign for us. We`re exactly where we deserve to be right now.

But i tell you what. I`m really scunnered with The Pars just now. Feel like the owners have lost any interest in making us competitive in the Championship while Rovers go from strength to strength. Falkirk romping League 1 as well while we seem to have settled for second best on and off the pitch. Just not good enough. As a fanbase we deserve better than this.

I don`t see spending money on the academy and spending money on the squad as competing alternatives. In economic terms it`s like the difference between capital and current expenditure. You shouldn`t need to switch between the two. If you always prioritised the playing squad you`d never achieve the necessary expenditure on the academy. It would always be `kicked down the road`.

If we hadn`t experienced the extraordinary incidence of injuries this season I`m sure our squad would have been pretty competitive in the top half of the league. There are a lot of accusations going around of lack of support but the failure to finalise deals seems to be more about the individual choice of players than lack of finance. When I heard QP were interested in Chris Kane I feared the worst because of his connection with Callum Davidson and was pleasantly surprised when we secured his deal. He may turn out to be a better acquisition than Zak Rudden would have been. Who`s to say we might not end up with a better signing than Ashcroft? It`s just unfortunate we`ve only got two days before we play PT!

Not convinced Ashcroft was ever a good idea, he never looked comfortable in a back 3, which the manager favours. Let’s see if they’ve any other experienced defender lined up - bar Efi Ambrose!!

I (foolishly) believed the impending arrival of Ashcroft was a factor behind the switch to a back 4 on Saturday.

It`s useless having academy if your a yoyo team between championship and league one.

To develop players to sell on, you really need to be in the SPL.

We can have a training pitch and academy but it will cost us more harm than good to run it from league one.

They have the priorities wrong, should be in SPL first before spending money on this.

The academy isn`t just about selling on. It`s about developing our own players so we don`t need to buy in. It`s also about having a facility to improve the current squad.

That said, I agree it`s a fine balance between investing in the future and investing in the here and now.

Agree, and a first class state of art training ground might just tip the balance for any player to sign.

Read something the other day about Hearts . They will be looking to build there own academy in two years time as the deal they have at the oriam will be coming to a end . This is after building a hotel at Tynecastle this year. Anne Budge is on record saying that when the time comes to build the academy, most if not all revenue will be going towards the building of the academy. She also said that over the next two years all revenue will be going on the playing side before hand . Mmm makes better sense than the way we`ve went about it.

Making the club an attractive successful club should have been first over building the academy. It’s not an “if you build it they will come” thing, you can build it but if you are in the seaside leagues you aren’t gonna attract players over the likes of Raith, Livingston etc. Funding it with the revenue from that league will be difficult too.

If we’d went for promotion first we’d be in a far better position to attract decent young players to the academy (and pay for it). There’s also the added revenue from the bigger gates.

At the moment it smacks of being more a school project than an actual business idea.

Oh well it stops all the speculation about maybe I maybe No ,
So it`s back to the drawing board ? Or maybe nobody on the radar ,
It`s kinda hard to entice anyone to come to us on the vein of form we are in ! And at present it`s not a good watch for us supporters either as we don`t know where our next win is coming from , we lose the same daft goals every week ! And the problem is we don`t take our chances at the other end which of late have been far and few between never mind we just need to keep being positive and hope for a miracle

The German investors made their intentions very clear when they came on the scene. I doubt they would have become involved if the Academy hadn`t been prioritised.

Fully expect them to be slaughtering us. They’ve been branded the ‘Wee Team’, for god knows how long, which clearly infuriates them! Now, they finally have a board taking them in the right direction. We on the other hand are shocking ran and going in the wrong direction! Ashcroft signing for them is the cherry on top as many were convinced he was coming to us,

But they ARE a wee team. Best season in years and still only had 7k for a top of the table clash against Dundee Utd. We had more in the First Division against a smaller rival. The guys at Raith are doing a cracking job but, as we learned at a massive cost in the 2000s, there`s a limit on how many fans you can attract. We naively thought we`d be averaging 8k crowds but pretty sure it was more like 5 or 6k. I don`t think Raith are overspending but the risk with promotion is the money isn`t much better unless you`re seeing big crowd increases and that isn`t guaranteed when there are a lot of teams in the Premier with woeful supports. Remember that the team at Raith moved on from Kelty as that had gone as far as it could.

Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen would pack Starks out.
Dundee would take a sizable crowd too, it`s a huge gulf between that and having Arbroath, Queens Park, Inverness, Airdrie and Ayr.

The prize money jump is massive too.

I’m disappointed about Ashcroft, perhaps putting too much emphasis on it but I think that signing alone would’ve made it much more likely for us to get out of the predicament we find ourselves in.

I don’t know enough about the pool of players who may be available to us, but I’m worried we won’t get the experience in we’re craving and it is a very difficult ask for the players we do have available to manage this on their own.

No good when even mcpake can’t attract players he knows….time to look wider that Dundee and Perth and roll the dice. Or have we just decided we don’t need anymore and we’ll hope we somehow limp through in the playoffs?

It’s at the point where I’m writing fri off and it’s all about the ayr game now.

McCann another who signed a long term deal despite yet another season of a nothing burger even at the lower level. He looks the part but can’t play the part.

Ashcroft addressed in there along with what now.

"I don’t know enough about the pool of players who may be available to us, but I’m worried we won’t get the experience in we’re craving"

if its loans, it will be a handful of players and of those, potentially none will be available. presumably free agents will be considered but again there wont be a lot of options

Tbh about the training "complex", if it is so called state of the art, i know many people (as a young man myself), who would 100% choose us over your hearts, hibs, etc as they would have guaranteed access to the training ground, and better training will get players better, and maybe unearth some gems through the academy for the mighty pars

Absolute nonsense. Living in cloud cuckoo land if you think a youngster from Fife is choosing a contract at Dunfermline (who are constantly jumping between league 1 and the championship) and a contract at hearts, Hibs, Dundee, Dundee Utd etc because we have our own training facility. Also, a better Astro turf pitch does not mean better training, they’ll still be getting trained by James Mcpake.

It`s frustrating in that another week has gone by, and we seem to be no further forward in getting a defender in.
Given that we play on Friday, it will roll on another week and another game less to go before the end of the season.

Can we loan players from the rovers? Maybe they have an experienced centre back surplus that they could loan us?

He would be better than what we have fit at the moment.

Team crying out for an experienced defender and an attacking midfielder and I’d suggest we need it to have a chance of avoiding 9th.

The experiment with multiple young loans has failed (same as last time time in this league). Just hope the 2 lads from Cardiff haven’t taken up the last of the wage budget.

Marc McNulty is quite jobby, and he is in his mid 30s. Chris Kane is much better, and will be a good player for us. Chris` work rate is something we desperately missed in the attacking areas. Just need to get that midfield and defence sorted one way or another.

Chance of a winners medal vs possible abuse and relegation?
