 Booing Visitors Anthem

How crass.

I guess those who indulged in this insulting behaviour before the NI match kicked off are the preening Tartan Army posers who will embarrass us with their silly wee feathered bunnets, saggy sporrans, and beer stained kilts at the Euros.

May the feathers moult, the sporrans get fleas and kilts wilt in the heat…

If you want to be picky about things God save the King is the British National Anthem which England and Northern Ireland use .Scotland and Wales have there own Anthems .but when it comes to the common wealth games all four home nations use a different Anthem .so no wonder countries confuse England as Britain when the Anthem is played at times

My general view is that national anthems should be treated with respect.

But the "British" national anthem has had anti Scottish lyrics incorporated within it for political reasons over the years, so I feel like Scottish people are quite entitled to reject it. Vocally. At high volume.

I always feel that supporters should stand in silence out of respect for opponents national anthem, however an exception has to be made for gstk. It`s a load of nonsense and England, Northern Ireland and GB deserve better than a song about an imaginary sky fairy saving an unelected head of state. These are great countries and they deserve an Anthem which extoils the virtues of their land and people rather than this dirge that sounds like it would be fit for a tinpot dictatorship. Imagine being king of a country where about a quarter of the children live in absolute poverty, and still having the brass neck to be taking millions out of the public purse.

The monarchy are an absolute disgrace and anyone who sings this song is a forelock tugging, brown nosing peasant with no respect for themselves.

It deserves all the booing it gets

I remember booing GSTQ at Hampden when it was Scotland’s anthem back in the 1970s and 1980s. Bizarre national anthem that asks a non-existing deity to save a mega rich leader of an entitled family so he can continue to be the number one parasite. No thanks.

Always makes me laugh how annoyed this gets folk!

(And no I didn`t boo it)

We booed theirs, they booed ours (which no one seems to be remotely bothered about 🤔) - tit for tat.

Move along, nothing to see here!!

If there is one anthem that deserves to be booed it is the dirge. Imagine paying homage to a man who takes money from dead people far less singing a song in his honour. It is from a bygone age and should be consigned to the dustbin of history….No self respecting Scot or indeed Briton should ever respect it.

A national anthem should be about a Nation…. not an individual…

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

“Rule Britannia” is so outdated that the idiots that sing it cant see the irony in what they are singing.

Britain is far from Great anymore, there is no British Rule anymore, Britain certainly doesn’t “rule the waves” and has been puppets to the American slave masters for decades now.

GSTK is a royal anthem, not a national one, unless you are of that illogical mindset that the UK is one single entity.

As for Great Britain - that is often misunderstood - it`s geographical/political terminology, nothing to do with Empire or miltary/naval supremacy of the past.

It represents the UK as an island with the Six Counties across the water excluded.

God has no interest in saving folk who relentlessly acquire unearned wealth, he mentions it a lot in his book.

He was more interested in saving sex workers and beggars.

GSTK is awful too, but it harks back to more recent times by several centuries !

Celebrating a man who is king, not because of God, but because his great-great-great etc grandparents took a lot of land and claimed it as their own. The equivalent nowadays would be like making Elon Musk out king because he`s got loadsa money. It`s pathetic and outdated. Tourism won`t disappear because the Royal family is dispensed with.

Working class people don`t care for an anthem glorifying someone they don`t know, will never know, who doesn`t care about them, all whilst probably struggling to make ends meet. No wonder it gets booed. Also, the anthem mentions about crushing Scots.

What business is it of us as Scots if the English and Northern Irish use GSTK as their national anthem? It should be common courtesy to respect that choice, especially when the visitors are guests in our country. There is enough hatred and division in this world without getting over-excited about a song.

If you read an English translation of many national anthems you`ll find the words are usually antiquated and ridiculous, refer to old battles and are often bloodthirsty. Eg I love the passion shown by the French in singing La Marseillaise, but even Napoleon banned it - and singing about drenching the fields with the impure blood of our enemies might merit an investigation by Police Scotland under our shiny new Hate Crime Act. :)

If you’ve got a rousing tune the lyrics don’t matter so much.
FOS and GSTK both fail miserably on that score.

I couldn’t really care what song another country chooses for is anthem - I will laugh at it if the lyrics are daft, eg GSTK/Q.

However, you could argue there is an issue because it’s not theirs? it’s joint ownership in our equal and voluntary union.
So they should probably be using their own song and keeping that one for occasions when it represents the UK?

"God Save the King" was sung by many patriotic Scots for many years. Then in the 1980s "Scotland the Brave" was used, including at the 1982 World Cup (personally I find it a bit twee, but at least it has a rousing tune and isn`t about a dynastic squabble hundreds of years ago).

The SFA then followed the SRU`s lead and changed to the "Flower of Scotland" dirge as their official anthem in 1997, but I don`t see why that lays any obligation on the English/NI fans to stop singing whatever they want to. I would quite like them to have individual songs, but it`s their choice - our choice as Scots is whether or not to be courteous to visitors to our country.

The SFA used Scotland The Brave when I was a lad in the 1980s but changed it to Flower of Scotland after Scotland won the Grand Slam in the early 1990s.

I am 52 and too young to remember God Save the Queen having anything to do with Scottish sport.

Think you’ve missed my point - I’m not saying any home nation can’t, I’m saying the uk anthem should be reserved for uk representation

Edited to say and then when it is, I’ll be disenfranchised twice in the first line!

If we want to discuss pettiness what about NI getting their best result in recent years yet singing about Scotland for half the night. Obsession in an abundance from a nation who will be playing lawn bowls while most of Scotland will be in Germany.

Scotland the Brave and Scots Wha Hae are both jaunty and better than the maudlin FOS.

Another one that was sung (murdered) in my time at Campdean School was Marie’s Wedding. Also had an uplifting tune, but the opening lyrics “ Step we gaily off we go” would likely be reported as a hate crime these days...
